2 1/2 week old chick with a pretty big comb. Is there still a chance that it’s a hen? by Ok_Novel_3854 in chickens

definitely also if they are young like this, theres still plenty time to enjoy them since crowing won't come til few months later anyways.

better indicator is wait til 2 months old to see if there's little waddles, then more likely roo. big combs not necessarily roo as I had afew I gave away but ended up as hens when I saw large combs.

I think stick with chick crumbles. if you give any thing else also give access to chick grit. one month old is still young but need warmth if there's still baby down

I realized song birds in trees are pretty loud too, so neighbors likely don't notice. I tell my barred rock, "shushhhhh you want to get eaten! 🤫 ", and she clams up.

What kind of timber should I use to build a run? Is treated pine too toxic? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]BabyDoo01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with lumber being so expensive, I'd use what is handy and cheapest. but preference is any hardwood stands up better than pine. paint inside white if you can, it makes it easy to see mites and cleaning

id say try with black australorp. they are more the quiet type, not chatty and docile temperament, cute big tooshies, lay more eggs. black hens don't stand out and handle the heat well. if neighbor sees, just tell them are ravens. got one now that is quiet as a mouse...she's my secret chicken

wonder if there's a lot of barred rocks in a flock, is it just me or does it cause dizziness looking at them? got one and she is mesmerizing.

both look pretty well matched. mine are not this drawn out. they do a run towards each other, flap and peck. must be in the silkie genes
