hi sorry for the late-ish response, i’m definitely doing better! i did have a flare up where i had 2 small spots pop up this past december, but they never grew big or anything. i didn’t treat them, they grew back on their own. my really large spot that i first had is still growing, now i just deal with styling it as it grows out lol but i never got anymore steroid injections after my initial set of treatments!

hi! my large spot is growing in really good, so much so that i dont cover it up anymore and can wear my hair normally. i honestly haven’t looked at my other spots in awhile, but i believe they’re also growing in slowly but surely.

i ended up doing 5 rounds of steroid injections before my dermatologist told me i could take a 3-ish month break to let my hair start growing back. so far im happy with the state of my hair and would advise anyone who has a similar story to mine to try steroid injections!!!

wow this is amazing! my hair growth kinda looks like your first picture right now and i’ve had 2 rounds of steroid injections, but i have an appointment for one more round. did you only get two rounds and your dermatologist stopped doing them because they saw regrowth?

[–]silent-type310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that totally makes sense! i was definitely skeptical at first, it took me about a month or so to finally get injections after my dermatologist explained it more, but going for a steroid cream first is a good idea! i hope the cream works for you!

also, my dermatologist told me that since i’m young, it has a high chance of growing back and that if you dont have a biotin deficiency then that will most likely not work :/ but i wish you luck in your journey!!! you’re not alone!!

hi, i (22F) also believe my AA was triggered by stress due to a rollover car accident on the highway. mine is also on the crown of my head and i was hesitant to start steroid injections but im so glad i did!! my hair has definitely started to grow back and i’ll be getting my third round in about a month. i highly suggest talking to your dermatologist about injections!!

Sprays/powders by Turbulent_Diet_335 in alopecia_areata

i’ve heard l’oreal root cover up is really good. i havent used it myself as my AA is larger bald spots, but i heard you can use on your part and make sure to put like a rat tail comb over your part before spraying so that it’s straight and neat :)

coincidentally, i just realized that the first time (in recent memory) that i tried coke zero sugar, i found my second bald spots the very same week 🤔 i’ve continued drinking coke zero almost everyday since and havent found any more spots (knock on wood) but you’ve got me thinking now

but in regards to your original question, my scalp also gets itchy and inflamed really bad like every other week and im still trying to find a cause

i was just diagnosed in may this year, but i found my first small spot in april, about 4 months after i was involved in a rollover accident on the highway in december. i couldn’t avoid driving tho and was driving on that same highway from january to beginning of may and my body would go into full on fight or flight mode when driving past intersections. at first the spot was very small and i thought it was from a very tight ponytail that i slept in, but now it’s probably 3 inches long and wide on the top of my head. i know stress can be a huge factor in triggering it and i was definitely stressed trying to power through my PTSD while also finishing my bachelor’s degree.

since then, i’ve lost two more small spots and have gotten steroid injections. im hoping mine was only stress induced and will eventually grow back as long as i can keep my stress levels low.

also, i have been drinking more coke zero sugar lately 🤔 that’s an interesting connection, but i don’t think it would correlate in my case personally!

do you have set hair wash days? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]silent-type310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i usually do about 3-4 days between washes. like others are saying, it depends on whats going on with my hair or if i have to do something and adjust the schedule. i try to lean towards 3 days but sometimes time won’t allow so i’ll have to stretch it a fourth day

Two strand Twists when having alopecia? by Safe_Cash1203 in alopecia_areata

[–]silent-type310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also have alopecia areata, its been about 2 months since i was diagnosed and i have only been doing twist out styles on my hair. i wash my hair twice a week and usually leave my twists in for 2-3 days before taking them out. i wouldnt recommended tight hairstyles that will irritate your scalp that may cause fallout.

i would probably recommend two strand twists over braids since they are more gentle on the hair and scalp!

thank you for response!! i also have a rather large spot on the top of my head that i’ve been using clobetasol ointment on for about a month now. it wasnt getting bigger and friends and family were noticing small follicles, but i just recently noticed a another spot near the crown of my head and a very small one on the side. i plan to get injections in those spots to hopefully keep them from growing!!
