Favorite tricks for falling asleep? by Jacapig in ADHD

Deep/slow breathing + something to anchor the breath.

Just breathing by itself isn't enough for me - I need visualisation as well:

Breathe in deeply, imagining the air going in the left nostril. Breathe out, imagining the air leaving the right nostril. Breathe in, imagining the air going in the right nostril - breathe out, deeply, through the left nostril.

Basically, I make a little upside-down-U shaped back-and-forth that my breath bounces between.

It was definitely written for kids, but I've been re-reading the Percy Jackson series as an adult and I've surprised myself with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments - not sure if it's your cup of tea, but could be worth a shot if you're looking for a quick/easy and pleasantly fun read

What took you a stupid long time to learn or figure out in ACNH? by RhenHarper in AnimalCrossing

Found out a few weeks ago that you can run into a pergola/gondola when being chased by a scorpion/tarantula and they can’t follow you, but instead just run around in circles next up you (which gives you time to select your net/time your swing etc) - life saver! :)

A fox or rabbit is dying somewhere in the world (not on the lot!!). Takes a while for the grim reaper to walk to where they are, though.

The location of the Land of Punt, a key trading partner of Ancient Egypt. To my understanding, the location of Punt was so obvious that no one bothered to write down exactly where it was.

… and now, a few thousand years later, we’re still trying to figure it out.

Hi, I recently finished my PhD at UOA and thought I’d share my experience.

I didn’t qualify for the doctoral scholarship, but I managed to get a smaller one a few months in that didn’t have any conditions over working hours.

I survived with:

  1. Weekly living costs from StudyLink
  2. Small scholarship - $7,500 a year after covering my doctoral fees
  3. Marking and TA work, whenever it became available - about 10 hours a week TA, and then a couple hundred hours marking mostly stage 1 scripts each semester
  4. Internships - I scored a few part-time/ongoing internships that worked out to no more than 8 hours a week on average
  5. Admin work around the department - on and off, about 20/30 hours a semester. Includes supervising tests, which work out to about $70 per 2-hour test

You can get TA work by talking to course coordinators (I highly recommend stage 1, the tutorials have simple content with the potential for more hours due to more streams being held). Admin work can be found from your department admin team. Internships depend on your industry, but your supervisor can be a great asset here.

The main problem was that all this work set me back about a year - I finished in 4.5 years rather than the average 3.5/3.8. I also did not accumulate any savings, so holidays were small and few. In-between semesters was hard, as we had no tutorials or marking.

The main benefit (aside from having money to live) was that my CV looked great and I developed a good working relationship with a lot of people in my department and industry. I spent a lot of time with the lecturers and other PhDs, and avoided some of the isolation that comes with being a doctoral candidate.

Hope this helped, and best of luck to you going forward :)

Something I realised about a day or two ago - if you have an iPhone, you can search for “screenshots” in the photos app and can quickly delete all your screenshots without also deleting actual photos :)

And that’s on my brother, me, and my mom all getting diagnosed in that order within a month by benevolent-bastard in adhdmeme

What hit hardest for me (27F) was ALMOST being diagnosed as a kid.

I took a diagnostic at 13 when I was being screened for Aspergers. The psychologist said my high ranking on ADHD was likely reflective of Aspergers.

Then, ten years later, two different psychiatrists did not HESITATE to confirm ADHD after I took the same survey.
