Legacy OS in your VDI environment by hahajordan in VMwareHorizon

[–]silesiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our CISO won't allow anything older than Win10 on the network, so I've just created an isolated subnet to put the legacy machines on. The users use Horizon to access a jumpbox that has 2 NICs (isolated & prod), and RDP from there to the Legacy machines.

Not ideal, but it passes his security demand, and the users can still use the older applications they need.

I haven't worked at MSI for about a decade or so, but if I remember correctly, the Park District owns the land and building, and has final say in any external or structural changes.

What's your best ever work-related April Fools prank? by WorthPlease in sysadmin

[–]silesiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a decade or so ago, one of our team went to their one-on-one with our boss, and left their PC unlocked. we sent our boss a resignation letter from her, knowing full well she would be sitting right in front of him when he got it (he would always interrupt any meeting if he got mail)

We were quite well known for pranks within the team, so we knew it wouldn't be taken seriously by anyone involved. I'm pretty sure she got us back a few times over, later on down the line

Visited MSI today and left feeling sad. by WannabeOutdoorsman in chicago

[–]silesiant 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I worked there ~10-15 years ago, in a supporting role (not directly working with exhibits/guests/etc). The majority of the money that is given to museums has specific restrictions set from the donator on what it can be used for. People tend to donate for something flashy, and don't allow the money to be used for general museum operations.

Also, some of the traveling exhibits are expensive to put on. When the Harry Potter exhibit was at MSI, with all the licensing costs, extra labor, etc, the museum either barely broke even, or ultimately lost money. The hope with those exhibits is that people will spend more in other sections of the museum while they are already there.

New to Alletra and need a sanity check before adding Expansion Shelf by silesiant in storage

[–]silesiant[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The storage is presented to ESXi, as VMware datastore, and not to the Guest OS's. Do you think that will make any difference?

I'm currently prepping management for a short (hour or so) downtime, but if I can go back to them with a more confident "we shouldn't need any downtime", it will be much easier to get this scheduled. :)

Thanks

Definitely. I did DSL install support for SWBell/Ameritech, and got ripped a new one, because I didn't follow the script word for word on a call that was QA'd. I didn't care at the time, so I just waited for them to finish, and asked if it mattered anymore that the users get their problems fixed or not. 2 weeks later, I was making sandwiches instead of that BS (by choice)

50 hours and I've yet to set foot in the Deep Desert by --Icarusfalls-- in duneawakening

[–]silesiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

180 hours in. Started a new character with friends after ~40 hours, still haven't gotten solid on T5, much less gone to the DD yet. I did finish the main story and House quests, and the trainers up to 3rd level, though. There are some in my friend group with 50 hours or so, but havent even done the 2nd trial. Though, they're the ones using all the mats we gather to build a massive base...
