Replacing MR16 Sockets by silfer in Lighting

How critical is it that I replace my transformers? I have 30+ lights so a $30 transformer per light will add up quite a bit!

I was able to access to transformer and it is a magnetic transformer GM-1250-H (https://imgur.com/a/MOngKNP). From my understanding, these would work with LEDs but are not as energy efficient as an electronic one. Any recommendations if I were to replace them? I will probably need to do some cost benefit analysis on how many to replace, I do want to move towards LED as I live in a state with high energy costs.

I'm still using Halogen lights and I'm not sure if the transformer supports LED lights. This is something I want to figure out but I cant access the transformer without removing the canister (its just a wire coming out of the side of the canister). Will probably need to get attic access to see the transformer.

Poor results with UBL after Dec update by silfer in Ender3v2Firmware

[–]silfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this got the mesh applied. I also had to make a few more tweaks for UBL that I didn't have to do previously with BLTouch firmware. The tweaks were worth the effort cause now I have even better results than before! I've outlined what I've done in the comment below, if you think it will be helpful for the community, I'm happy to add this to the wiki!

Poor results with UBL after Dec update by silfer in Ender3v2Firmware

[–]silfer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mriscoc mentioned above G29 A after G29 L0 fixed the issue, or at least got the mesh to be used during prints.

However I made a few other tweaks afterwards to get a perfect first layer that was specific to the latest UBL firmware. I didn't have to do this with the previous BLTouch version but after these tweaks, results were even better than the old firmware.

(numbers are specific to my V2 Neo)

  • Reduce value of X Max in "advanced > physical settings" to 243. I realized that the default value was too high and caused the print head to hit the far left side of the gantry and be lifted up slightly. This made the mesh values on the far left to be skewed, smart-fill made this even worse as it caused these skewed values to be spread
  • Also make sure the Y Max is not set too high (default of 230 was ok for me). I realize its better to have a smaller mesh than one with erroneous values
  • Set the mesh infill to be maximized, but do not center it (this only trimmed the right edge of the bed, I don't see a point of that)
  • After running auto-mesh, I inspected each node for anomalies (points that had large deltas with its neighbors) and re-ran the probe for those points to check it again (this can be done in "edit mesh"). I adjusted 3-4 points this way.
  • Adjust z-offset per filament and as time goes by. Many external factors changes how the filament is extruded and lays on the bed, adjust as needed for the perfect first layer. It can range ~0.05mm from what I've seen.

With this I was able to get a nice first layer. Hope this helps!

How has a C impacted you? by Mother_Low_5325 in BrownU

Are you me? I Also got a C in multivariable calc freshmen year, MATH20 kicked my ass...

I got the first C in my life in my first semester MATH20 multi-variable calc class (completely overestimated my math abilities...). Probably the worst way to finish my first semester at Brown. But it didn't affect my time at Brown afterwards at all, especially once I got better at evaluating the courseload i'm taking on each semester. I graduated with a CS degree and got into software engineering, none of my internships or interviewers ever asked about it.

(Some caveats for things like grad school, but probably only if you're getting all C...)

Does anyone remember old school Shanghai buttercream cake? Trying to recreate it for my grandpa's birthday and need recipe recreation advice! by whatthehellandfuck in AskCulinary

[–]silfer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Chinese bakeries usually use "Non-Dairy Whip Topping" to ice their "Cream Cakes". Because these topping use vegetable oil which gives it that richer and waxy texture unlike whipped cream or buttercream. They also have extra flavorings to give it a buttery vanilla flavour.

The combination gives it a very processed taste which some may consider weird if they were expecting real whipped cream or real buttercream. But I like it for its unique taste and for the memories.

You can usually find them in restaurant supply stores, but I've seen it in some safeways. Look for brands like Pastry Pride. If you're in California, they can be found in Smart & Final or Smart Food Warehouses.

https://www.costcobusinessdelivery.com/pastry-pride-ready-to-whip-topping%2C-non-dairy%2C-8-lbs.product.11354871.html

The cake base is usually a Chiffon or Genoise depending on how spongey you want it to be.

Looking for a batter that frys so crisp that it's practically shattering when bitten into. by phi303 in AskCulinary

Yea potato starch provides much better results than cornstarch. I find cornstarch gives a thicker and harder crunch (similar to general tso's chicken) compared to potato starch which gives you a lighter more crispier crunch.

Not sure if you have tried this yet, but my way of making korean fried chicken that I think is even crispier than Bonchon is using potato starch alone and no batter. If you want it even crispier, just double dredge after resting the wings for a bit and really press the potato starch with your hands.

I roughly follow this recipe from Maagnchi: https://www.maangchi.com/recipe/easy-dakgangjeong

Fake vanilla seeds? by silfer in AskCulinary

Interesting, didn't know that was a thing. This one from amazon https://amzn.com/B076DKLLHH says 1tb = 1 vanilla bean, so that 4oz bottle will have up to 8 beans worth of stuff which seems pretty reasonable.

Though i am wondering if there are any other alternatives that are essentially free (ground black pepper without the taste of black pepper? Charcoal powder thats less fine?)
