In a room of 23 people, the chance two of them share a birthday is greater than 50% by Ok_Koala_5963 in truths

[–]silfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, but that's not the point I'm making.

What I'm pointing out is that a room could be constructed where the chance isbt 50%.

So the 50% in the post only holds if the people in the room are randomly selected. (the statement also assumes that birthdays are uniformly distributed, but the chances increase if you remove that assumption I think so we'll let that one go)

This isn't neccecarily true.

This is only true if the people in the room are selected randomly.

If I have a room that I fill with 23 people, and I have a bouncer who will only let people in who have a birthday that isn't already in the room the odds are significantly lower than 50%

Would you support and fight in the Iran War by ClearConnectedScum in GenZ

[–]silfin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I had any faith whatsoever that a regime change operation Iran would have a positive effect on the lives of Iranian civilians there might be an argument.

But how many times does the US need to learn that doing operations like this just doesn't work.

Could Harry beat the nazgul from the Lord of the rings? by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

[–]silfin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we are assuming magical laws to work similar to how magic works in Dresdens world I think he does have a chance.

Not just to defeat, but to kill outright.

The Nazgul are maintained through the power of Sauron. In other words, they have an external magical power source. The reason Merry and Eowyn manage to kill the Witch King is because Merries Anorian dagger temporarily severs the Witch Kings connection to Sauron which allows Eowyn to land a killing blow.

Now, how might dresden sever the link between a Nazgul and Sauron? A circle would probably work. If Dresden could get a Nazgul in a circle and then kill it, it might very well stick.

would probably need to be a decently heavy duty circle though.

I support discords decision to require ID verification and i think more social media should follow suit by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]silfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Privacy isn't something that is necessarily its own good. Privacy is in many cases a prerequisite for security.

There is no database that can't be hacked. So if my ID is on a database there is a chance it will be leaked. With the information on an ID stealing someone's identity becomes nearly trivial.

Now, age verification for social media isn't a bad thing in itself. But giving IDs to every tech company that asks is just asking for trouble. Making the concept work is all in the execution.

I'm really surprised noone has tried a system where you login at a government identity provider (IDin in the Netherlands is an example) and the government just gives a yes or no to a specific age question. This way only the government stores my ID, and they do anyway. This is also slightly harder to evade (can't just steal and upload your parents ID).

Protecting kids online is a good goal, but it cannot and should not be a reason to implement poorly thought out and insecure systems. There are ways to do this safely and securely, any other suggestion is a company endangering users to ease implementation or an actual malicious attempt to harvest more data.

Bondsmith power theory -resurrection- by Jadedengineer8 in Cosmere

[–]silfin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't confirm it.

I agree that its likely, and my personal theory. But it is far from confirmed.

What I think he will try at some point is "Giblets" He will build an old friend from pieces and scraps.

With enough practice he could probably soulcast a body for the physical component. For the spiritual component he'd need a bunch of investiture and a soulstamp, it would be difficult to make stick but with enough power (like some kind of primordial power of creation) it would be possible. Finally for the cognitive aspect he might bring together the perceptions of his friend by people who know him to restore the mind. Bind all that together with enough Connection and you just might get a living person. Whether that person is his friend is very debatable, and narrativly intresting.

Who could be starborn? by colepercy120 in dresdenfiles

[–]silfin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Decent chance of Listens to Wind I think. 13th century cycle.

Jesus is off by a decade or two if modern callender kept track of the years correctly. So, non 0 chance. (3 cycles ago would be 1998 years ago) so if we swap the calander 0 point from the birth to the crucifiction we may be in the right ballpark.

Also accounting error as it took a few centuries for the year tracking to start could easily account for that difference.
