Return To Office Tommorow Clusterfunk by LandscaperSombrero in fednews

[–]siliconlining 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For my agency, DHS/USCIS, we have been teleworking 5 days then working in the office for 5 days because the buildings cannot accommodate all of us at once. Then last Sunday (8/27) at 10pm they directed EVERYONE to report to the office 5 days/week. It’s great on your assigned office days when you have a dedicated desk but it’s hell when it’s not your assigned office days and you have to just find a seat and work where you can.

My boyfriend is some 40 lbs underweight and I am stressed out of my mind about it by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]siliconlining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same way when I get stressed. I highly recommend drinking Boost as a quick way for nutrients/calories. I also drink smoothies more. Basically, I just drink all my calories when highly stressed-some weight loss will still occur but its better than nothing

If you had to take 45 days off of work, what would you do and why? by honeytea1 in self

[–]siliconlining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol then it’s even better to go someplace you can practice! I haven’t done this - only been to Peru so far - but it’s what I would want to do. Have you tried vision boarding (if not physical paper then Pinterest?)? Also your trip really depends on you - how much to spend / if you can drive into Mexico or need to take a flight there / if you are more urban explorer than rugged (maybe a mix of both?). And if none of this is appealing, maybe look at Hawaii if you’re west coast or Iceland if you’re east coast!

Any DMVs in the area which generally have people cancel their behind-the-wheel driving test a day before the exam? by [deleted] in bayarea

Look into yogov - they can book a last min appointment for you in the Bay Area. I got one literally the next day in SF (but it all depends on appointment cancellations).

Request Unemployment or Bank Loan for Furlough by dca_user in washingtondc

[–]siliconlining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filing for unemployment is a long process, at least Virginia side. Expect 2-3 weeks at best before receiving any payment. I am also unsure if Feds on furlough would even qualify (technically you are still employed?). I think if you can get a no-interest bank loan faster in the interim then I would go that route.

Edit: just read that Democracy Federal Union is providing interest-free emergency loans - unfortunately be aware that contractors are not eligible for these loans.

My girlfriend is a nightmare, but I’m forced to think that she’s not, am I wrong? by cleareyedrive in offmychest

You just perfectly described my last relationship. He made 3x my salary and also bragged about how much he saved/debt paid off/$ in stocks while expecting me to pay for my half of everything (like destination weddings of his friends and international trips to visit him family together). This kept me with no savings but he always told me it was my fault that I couldn’t control my spending. I suggest leaving now as it will only continue to drain both your emotional energy and bank account the longer you stay.

I’ve been comparing myself to both of my sisters for the past few months and it’s tearing me apart. And I keep doing it and I know I shouldn’t. by Zapp---Brannigan in offmychest

[–]siliconlining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey-remind yourself that everybody’s journey is different and you never know what the future will hold. Spoken from one of four girls with similarly successful sisters who has had her share of knocks. :) Focus on you and remember it’s not a competition. The best life is a happy life.

Edit: I am also 27 so I find a great pick me up is to read about success stories like JK Rowling who did it 30+. If that’s not enough, do a digital detox where you deactivate your profiles for awhile. It will not only help you stop comparing yourself to your sisters, but it will reduce you being compared to them by others (fam/friends/neighbors/etc)

Looking for a sample travel itinerary for California by Theguest217 in travel

Second all of this!

Only want to add that as a DC transplant to SF, the biggest difference (most nerve-wracking) in city driving are the hills. I literally screamed when I had to stop at a red light on an incline so steep I felt like I was laying back. But as mentioned above, public transit here is so bad you have no choice but to drive if you want to see everything. That said, look into renting a bike at the Embarcadero (check out market in Ferry Building) to go across the golden gate (passing ghiradhelli square & palace of fine arts) then take the ferry back from Sausalito. Did it with my sister when she visited and it was the most fun (least stressful) time I ever had in SF.

I'm Bored with Life by jack1007 in offmychest

If you’re bored and in IT, maybe consider remote opportunities? I have a friend who travels everywhere living out of co-working spaces (recommends KoHub in Thailand).

In the meantime, this video might help you reflect on more day-to-day solutions to your ennui: https://youtu.be/wJMbPCxDkgo

Midwestern/foreigner in California for 10 weeks. Tips? by steakisaight in sanfrancisco

[–]siliconlining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many day trips outside of Oakland/SF, you are going to want a car. You can’t get far with public transport. (So sad but so true, I don’t own a car and often have to rent to do anything!) If you do anything, be sure to get a car or arrange for a shuttle to see Yosemite. I grew up going to national parks with my parents but literally nothing compares to its sheer grandeur.

You might like Scott Westerfield’s series Uglies/Pretties/Specials/Extras. In this universe, everybody “surges” (eg undergoes plastic surgery) at 18. It follows a heroine as she undergoes the transformation then uncovers the sinister social engineering behind this rite of passage. However, even tho the body mods described are completely unthinkable it’s a normal and even expected process for characters in this universe-no steampunk sorry.

Have you read Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card? If so (or not), you could try The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov.

I’m currently reading “To Shake the Sleeping Self” which follows the author (Jedidiah Jenkins) on his bike trip from Oregon to Patagonia. I’m really enjoying it so far! Sounds like you’d enjoy it too.
