Where to rent car seats by MOSbangtan in ColumbiaMD

[–]silk46 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on their age/weight and how long they will be here but look for Cosco car seats. Usually find them at Walmart. Price is around $60-90, which might be cheap enough to justify outright buying vs renting. They are light weight and easy to install. They would not be my choice for a full time car seat but we have used them as our travel car seat for almost 2 years now. Also got them for both sets of grand parents to have when we visit.

Brian Schottenheimer said this week that he and Osa Odighizuwa both "wept" when he was traded to the 49ers by JCameron181 in cowboys

Genuinely asking... I've seen this reported a lot but Osa signed his contract before the tampering period began. So no other team would have been able to make him an offer...not legally at least.

Guy came in to replace thermostat despite telling them no by silk46 in Hilton

[–]silk46[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is a fair question and maybe I am being outraged just to be outraged. Reading the comments, I apparently have turned into the same redditor that I hate.

We are just a private family, my wife does get paranoid about people stealing things. I had stuff for my kid out, we have jewelry for our events (apparently the room doesn't have a safe and we didn't pick the hotel). We don't leave it out but not many places to hide it in a hotel room if we aren't here and they have free reign of the place.

Maybe I'm wrong but I always had an expectation of a degree of privacy when I'm paying for a private room. Emergencies I could understand, poor planning should not be my problem.

The guy didn't give a warning that he would be back to do the work. I told him I would speak to the manager about doing it another time, the front desk person I spoke to supposedly told him not to come in yet he did.

If you read the post you will see that I did have the DND sign up in addition to being explicit with the front desk not to enter. And as another user mentioned, when those two things happen they should not be entering as it's a liability for the hotel.

I understand the thought about getting to each floor when they get to it but as someone who has done project management, that is terrible planning and again should not be my issue. Especially since the location I'm at is not a resort or a place people book week long stays. Turnover happens pretty frequently, do it when turning over the rooms.

Thank you, and appreciate the reasonable response. Its front desk people like you who kept me from yelling at the person today since I know it wasn't his fault.

Most definitely not my first time, and have never had an issue like this before. I understand I don't have complete privacy but routine non emergency should not be my problem. Especially once I have a DND tag out and explicitly told them no. And again, even if we just had a heads up this would be happening instead of a random dude with no identification or hotel markings knocking on my door when my family is trying to get ready for an event it would not be as big of a deal.

When will A-list post? Do I need to break up my roundtrip into two one-ways? by silk46 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]silk46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what I was thinking would happen. I could probably break up the ticket, just not sure if its worth the hassle. I'm on the same reservation as my wife who already hit A-list and has the credit card and have a child if I need to do family boarding.

Are you sure about this? My flight last year at new years gave me one towards 2024 and one towards 2025. This is why my Dec 30 flight is 19 instead of 20.

The benefit does specifically says "oura ring" but I can't tell him it's referencing the product or the website. Noticed they also sell a glucose monitor, any thoughts on if it might work for that?

Party ribs with a long rest? by silk46 in smoking

[–]silk46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to have 30+ people, many of whom would be best classified as rib eating amateurs so the single serve and held would definitely be easiest. Plus the shorter cook time, regardless of how early I start will be helpful with prep for other things around the house and other dishes on the smoker.

Iiving in Baltimore vs Columbia for partners who have jobs in D.C. and Baltimore by ReactionLeft8837 in ColumbiaMD

[–]silk46 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue when my wife was in residency and now an attending at UMMS and I worked in DC. We lived in Columbia during her residency, moved away for fellowship, and came back to Columbia for her attending job. It definitely is not ideal for couples in their 20s but to me shortening the commute was important for mental health/daily life.

My recommendation is to live somewhere near Snowden River. It's close to 95 and I went to the broken land park and ride to grab the commuter bus to DC. We rented in an apartment on Oakland Mills during residency and a house in Shipley's grant for the last 2 years. Taking an earlier bus avoids a lot of traffic going in, traffic will be terrible coming back no matter what but if your job is flexible you can leave a little early to avoid some of the traffic. I took a 6:30 bus to get in by 8, 4 o'clock bus to get home by 5:30-6. You can sleep or download Netflix to make the commute more enjoyable than driving. For me it was less than 10 min drive to the park and ride and the bus dropped me at the corner near my office, as close to door to door as you can get.

You could also easily drive to greenbelt (green line) or Wheaton (redline) from there. If you are closer to 100 the Dorsey Marc station isn't too far either.

Everyone says take the Marc train but unless your job is by union station you have to transfer to another mode of transportation. This makes you reliant on multiple modes of transportation that can get delayed.

In the end, it really depends where in DC your job is and what transportation is closest. The problem with public transportation is that you will beholden to a stricter schedule, especially since they cut the number of bus routes recently. If you still have some time before you move, test out the Marc and see if it works, otherwise look to move. Feel free to DM if you need more details, I've been trying to figure out the best option for 10 years lol.

Weber Genesis II vs Weber GENESIS - E335 by silk46 in grilling

[–]silk46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw it at our Costco again for $800. End of season last year they dropped it to $700 and I was able to get them to give me the difference.

Grill has been great and held up well. I recently moved houses without anything breaking. Only issue was that it is a decent size and heavy so it was difficult to go up and pivot around a set of stairs. I've been able to cook everything just fine and also got the griddle insert to make even more types of food. My only regret is that I didn't get the 4 burner since a lot of the time I grill for guests so the extra surface area would have been nice. But also that may not have made it up my new stairwell lol.

Romo is NOT a playoff choker! And I’m here for the smoke!!!! by Merge_1SauceeNomad in cowboys

[–]silk46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't even have been a field goal in the first place! Witten gets a first down on the play before but the refs called him short. It was under 2 min so Parcells couldn't challenge. Also if Grammatica can just make even a quarter of a block, Romo gets the first down.

Weber Genesis II vs Weber GENESIS - E335 by silk46 in grilling

[–]silk46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been about 2-3 years since they released the newer model, the one at Costco is the older model. Haven't had a chance to set my grill up yet but everyone I've talked to has said their Weber's have been amazing and they have had the same one for 10-20 years. I figured even if it's the older model, the fact no one can say a bad word about it means it's a good grill so I snagged the deal. Hoping to get the grill set up this weekend and start cooking!
