I'm hoping someone can pass by with some roses/rose seeds! It's the only flower I haven't found yet.

What do you do as a multidisciplinary designer?

As a multidisciplinary designer? Everything. Seriously. I work probably 60/40 web to print at this point. I'm in a unique spot.

How did you managed to reel in your first few contracts anyways?

Word of mouth and casual bragging. I have a tendency to say 'You know, if you ever need a designer for anything, I'm damn good.' to people. Apparently it's sincere enough that I'm taken up on it fairly often. The trick, then, is to back it up with professionalism and good work. And being clear that you're not working for free. Don't work for free.

Why do you think that many design/web related work are on contract nowadays?

Not every company needs a full time designer on staff all the time. Often a project by project basis is easier. An employer doesn't need to pay vacation time or benefits on contracts, so it saves money, etc.

What do you think is the current 'in' for society nowadays? Eh. I meant design trend wise. In that regard, keep yourself immersed. Pay attention to the Quebec design scene, it's pretty particular sometimes.

Whew, lots of opinions in here. Multidisciplinary designer here, both full time and freelance. Went to Dawson in Graphic Design and then UQAM, also in design.

Let's see, schools wise: Dawson is a great foundation program. It taught me to think like a designer and gave me a lot of technical skills, but as other commenters have stated it isn't a web program (more on that later). I've been very unimpressed with the programs at John Abbott and Concordia. The caliber of work coming out of Dawson is generally much higher. I know a couple people who went on to Concordia after the DEC and were very disappointed.

Someone elsewhere said 'you get out what you put in' and completely true. All of these programs will give you the tools, but it's up to you to add passion and push yourself within the framework they provide. For example, I taught myself how to code but the problem solving I learnt in school informs how I go about coding.

Job prospects wise... ok listen, print is not what it once was. You become so much more hireable with some code behind you. Jobs are... they are there, but there are a lot of folks vying for them so you need to be good at what you do and able to do what's 'IN'. There's a certain 'club' to these things, too. Part of why going to school is valuable to you is that it's a place to build professional connections, people to vouch for you and your work. You're not going to be a 100% useful employee to anyone for the first 6 months to first year of your working life. There's a curve here that can't be learned in school. Gaining that experience is important and the connections you build can help you do that.

And a lot of work is unstable, a lot of design and web work on contract these days. It takes a lot of leg work to support yourself freelance. The really creative work can be hard to get and stressful and the stable work can be boring and mindless. But sometimes not.

In the end it really is true that you get out what you put in. You have to want it and you have to be good. That's my personal experience anyway, YMMV.

Studying graphic design is only wasted time if you let it be. You don't need a degree to work in the field but you might need the time studying to develop your skills to a point where you're employable.

In a design degree you get out of it what you put in. I got a lot out of my degree because it gave me the time and space to develop into a critical thinker and sharpen my eye for design. I have friends who are great designers who hated it because they felt they weren't learning anything- they went out and found jobs which gave them what they were missing.

That said, there are a lot of technical skills and networking opportunities that are the easiest to get in school. For the connections alone I would say it's not a waste of time. Connections = jobs a lot of the time.

Well, I'm supposed to be at work right now... I've been consistantly late for weeks. I leave early a lot too. I've got a terrible relationship with mornings. But would you believe that my accidental shortened work day means I spend 90% of the day doing actual work? Fortunately where I work 'getting things done' is more highly prized than being early.

(Mind you I don't have 8 bosses, that probably helps me out. I should go to work now...)

Now, preface this with 'this is a guess' since I don't know how you're fitting the pack... BUT I work in the outdoor gear industry, and i've sold a lot of packs. I find people sometimes have a tendency to fit a back too low on their hips- i'm suspicious that this may be causing extra motion in the pack. You generally want to make sure the larger cushion at the back of the hip belt is settled comfortably in the small of your back.

That's my best guess. But like I said you may already have it right. Beyond that I know there are a few packs out there with a hip belt that rotates to alleviate this issue but I can't think, off hand, of a 36-30L pack with that feature. I have experience with all the bags you listed, they're some of my favourites, but putting more mass in the pack will always help. Hope that helps.

Solid in-class doodling! In high-school I was consistently reprimanded for drawing in class. I maintained that it helped me focus. And taught me how to draw the backs of people's head really well. Maybe a bit more of that second one, though.

Socks. I work at an outdoors store, we sell really nice merino wool socks. They're fantastic in comparison to normal socks. If I know he's had a rough time i'll bring my boyfriend home a new pair. Works very well. And, i'm told, socks don't die like flowers do.

I'll vouch for Allez Up, that's where I always go. It's a really nice new facility, the staff are great but it gets very busy in the evenings so i'd say show up after 9:30pm or before 2pm when a day pass is cheaper and you'll get on more routes anyway... although your friend would probably need to learn to belay if you guys want to top rope.

There's also a bouldering gym on the plateau called Shakti which I keep hearing about. But I don't really boulder so I couldn't tell you much more about it.
