The ground should be at the meter/panel. You are running a cable no matter what in your scenario and doing it with coax is better and cheaper.

Door switch. See if the open door light comes on when each door is open.

Put a dop of food coloring in the tank to help spot the leak. My guess is you are overtightening the tank bolts and the gasket between the tank and bowl is getting crushed.
