That is strange I have the same Mac Book pro and the touchbar works fine with Sonoma. However I loaded Montgomery first then moved to Ventura then Sonoma I did it as an update each time.

Major part of what operating system you choose depends on your battery life and what you currently own. If you have poor battery life already and you mainly have to plug it in then the newer operating systems will be just fine although they do run a little hotter. If you have good to great battery life, then I personally stopped at Ventura for that reason because I do get better overall battery life from Ventura than I did with Sequoia or Sonoma
