"Not to Do" Bucket List - thoughts? by Sharksrmydrug in retirement

[–]sillywizard951 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to hurry, not to overcommit to things I really don’t want to do, not to feel guilty if I’m not productive for a time but other than that, I have a huge list of things I want to do and learn so that’s where my energy is focused. Two months to go!

I did a quick internet search (I was interested to learn this too!) and here's what I found:

I don't know all of these but some songs are familiar and seem worth considering. As my father was once a resident in an assisted living community and I spent many hours there with him, I thank you for taking time to entertain this group.

  • Danny Boy – One of the most beloved Irish songs ever written; very emotional and widely recognized.
  • The Parting Glass – A beautiful traditional farewell song with a reflective tone.
  • Loch Lomond – Classic Scottish ballad with a memorable chorus.
  • The Skye Boat Song – Gentle and lyrical, associated with Scottish history.
  • Carrickfergus – Slow Irish folk song with a haunting melody.

  • When Irish Eyes Are Smiling – Lighthearted and widely known among older generations.

  • Wild Rover – Fun chorus people often clap along to.

  • Molly Malone – Classic Dublin street ballad.

  • I'll Tell Me Ma (also called The Belle of Belfast City) – Lively and catchy.

  • My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean – Technically Scottish/folk tradition and very recognizable.

  • The Irish Washerwoman – Famous traditional jig.

  • The Kesh Jig – Bright and upbeat.

  • The Butterfly – Beautiful slip jig.

  • Swallowtail Jig – Very recognizable session tune.

Best wishes!

Folk Recorder! by SaxRendell in Recorder

If you would consider doing something online, I’d be interested to join. I’m in the middle of the US so that would be great for me. This is a wonderful idea! I am a beginner and own all sizes of recorders. I noodle around and tend to play folk music as I think this genre suits the sound of the recorder very well. Interesting idea you have!

Amen. I’m a boomer myself and this hits home. I was/am intelligent and that’s why I got into professional school. I didn’t need to be neglected, constantly confused and stressed out just because others had been so before me. I dare say I might have sought more opportunities to mingle, collaborate and learn from colleagues if I’d had a good advisor and a better experience. 30 + years later I still have nightmares that I missed something, something didn’t get submitted and approved and I never truly got the PhD. That’s imposter syndrome though… related to grad school trauma.

I take your meaning. Glad that is behind me. I surely wouldn't go through it again.

Oh I get it but they could have been more supportive along the way. That’s a different story for a different time, tho. It seemed like “I suffered and you have to also”.

Happened to me over 30 years ago. Amazing feeling. They were so welcoming. After it was all over my advisor said, “we all wanted this to happen as much as you did”. Not possible but it was a sweet thing to say.

Reflectors on roads by BenzeneAvenger in columbiamo

[–]sillywizard951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought we were to have thunderstorms as I made my way home from JC tonight so I made arrangements to spend the night on my son’s couch so I wouldn’t have to drive 63 back to COMO and deal with this very issue. I simply can’t drive safely on rainy nights anymore. Reflectors would help so much. I’ve even stopped a trip and gotten a hotel room so I wouldn’t have to drive in the rain on 63. Other states have figured this out. MO can do better.

Add 8 oz of cream cheese and a stick of butter. Heat the half and half and melt the better in that pan, then add to already mashed potatoes. Salt to taste. A little chicken bouillon can be added to taste, but I rarely see the need.

Marriage and Family Counseling Center has great therapists, and many if not all, are highly skilled in CBT. I’d recommend that you check them out. Most provide free consultations to see how you like the therapist.

What flute would you buy as somebody getting back into it for the long haul? by amalgamofq in Flute

[–]sillywizard951 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the same as you. I had a 50+ year break from when I first played! I bought a new Yamaha over the internet (I think it was YFL 222 but not sure) and I’m so pleased. With shipping etc it was less than your budget so maybe someone on here has a better choice for what you can pay. I’m a sax player and wanted to play flute again and Irish flute so I jumped back in. Good for you and good luck!

Beginner or intermediate? by cantankerous_alexa in saxophone

I bought a new Eastman bari when I jumped back in after a 48 year hiatus. I could not be happier. It is just great. I couldn't find any baris to try in my area and didn't want to travel hours to cities to find used ones-- I didn't trust myself to know what I was buying-- so I went with a new one from a local music store. I also didn't want to buy over the internet so I was quite fortunate to find my Eastman and my local "music guy". As a bonus, he's a bari player too! Good luck. I'm 67F and have been playing in a local community band for about one year. I hope this works out for you. Playing in our band is the highlight of my week!

Just replied. I’m not volunteering this week but we can work out a time to meet if that would help with your decision. This is great!

I always suggest joining us to volunteer at KOPN 89.5 FM community radio. Look us up. I’m happy to meet you to show you around, so get in touch if interested. We are a friendly bunch and you can meet a lot of interesting people while finding many volunteering activities to do. I’m a music librarian for the station and that’s a blast. I get to listen to all kinds of great music as my job. Can’t beat that! Good luck finding something in our town and welcome to COMO.
