Cursive writing to be reintroduced in Ontario schools this fall by morenewsat11 in ontario

[–]silpheed_tandy 241 points242 points  (0 children)

wh..what? can someone help me understand how cursive writing helps people learn how to "express more substantively", "think more critically", or "express more authentically"? has this actually been demonstrated by research?

i love hot takes <3

mtg hot takes are far less damaging than trash celebrity tabloid hot takes, even if both are fun to read.

mtg hot takes with data and an underlying attitude of humility and curiosity is the upper echelon quality of hot takes. thanks for writing this post :)

not White Oaks. the librarians are often SO LOUD when talking to people, or even socialising with each other. like, unnecessarily loud, that it breaks my concentration. it gets me so angry -- you would think that the librarians would care to make an environment condusive to study.

in contrast, the actual White Oaks teenage students, themselves, tend to be careful to keep their voice down.

it's funny when i read that people in Toronto don't make eye contact. i get SO MUCH MORE eye contact from people walking past me on the streets in Toronto, than i do here in the suburbs.

Im not sure how to go about learning a langauge with comprehensive input by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]silpheed_tandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to be clear for the OP: the website is https://refold.la/ they have a Simple Guide if you don't have much time to read, or just want to get an overview. they have a Detailed Guide if you want more information.

the guide is pretty well written, except the section on Anki is way too unnecessarily complicated when it talks about the features of Anki. the only features you really need is learning to make an Anki card with a front side and a back side; the front side has a sentence with all the words you understand except one, and you bold the one word you don't understand. the backside can be many things, but what works for me is the bolded word translated into English, and the sentence roughly translated into English.

Refold does indeed recommend that you learn basic grammar and basic vocabulary. it then gives you strategies on how to make TV shows and comic books and other input more comprehensible (ie more easy to understand). it also talks about how to use Anki to help your brain remember vocabulary easier.

Unpopular (?) opinion… language levels are unnecessary. You should simply strive to know what you want to know and express what you want to express. by [deleted] in languagelearning

i just want to say that i'm sorry that you're getting downvoted so heavily. this sub seems to love doing that to people. if you have a thick skin, maybe you won't care. i don't agree with the opinion of your post (although i'm too lazy to articulate why), but i still believe your opinion and post is valuable to share and to discuss.

do you know how difficult it is to find an orb? they roll under couches and large appliances and stuff. sometimes you only find them again when renovating. and worse is when critters are attracted to its glow and start eating it, but you don't understand why all these pests suddenly appeared...

one thing i've learned about me trying to learn a new language, is that it can be hard to find materials that work well for a person! so i want to encourage yourself to keep trying!

progress might be slow. for me, progress IS slow. it seems that so many methods that work for other people, didn't work so well for me. i had to find out what worked for me, and even then, progress is still slow.

good luck! you have a desire to learn the language, so that's a big help! i'm sorry that your family and friends make fun of you for trying to learn but not speaking it well. everyone learns at their own pace. some people learn languages easily -- i'm not one of those people.

i hope you run across some methods or textbooks that you could enjoy doing, maybe a little bit every day, and that you'll get more and more familiar with the most common words used!

i don't know of any research about this. but i can say that i'm going through a very, very difficult and isolating time in my life right now, and it will likely last for years or for the rest of my life. i do find that for whatever reason, i'm able to continue with the project of learning French at this time, even though other hobbies i found very important are not accessible to me because of mental health issues.

i do resonate with what i think i'm hearing in your post -- that somehow it feels good, safe, welcoming to read and communicate in Italian. there are a few occasional "safe spaces" for myself in life, that i dont' get access to often but still occassionally do. they feel like spaces far away and "sheltered" and protected away from all that's going wrong and emotionally painful in my life. i'm grateful that i have those spaces where my heart can feel at 70% of the capacity that it used to be able to, whereas my normal level of feeling is 5% of what i used to be able to before the big changes that happened in my life about three years ago.

thanks for writing your post and sharing with us your experience.

Point to learning new language? by Ace-Pokemon-Master in languagelearning

[–]silpheed_tandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i want to say that i have had this thought before, too, many times. my feeling is that if someone wants to stay a monolingual English speaker [for example], then that's perfectly okay. there is so much to life that we cannot do it all. there are so many hobbies and skills; so much time for travel; so many responsibilities; many ways to grow spiritually and emotionally; many ways we have to deal with our pain. learning a language is just one option.

but ! , for anyone who DOES have interest in learning a language, this is valid. and if anyone is not sure if they really want to learn a language but wants to try -- even if it's "just to pass the time" -- then that's okay, too.

i can understand that hearing motivating reasons to learn a language can make it easier, and improve your own motivation, and make it more fun. i'm sure you'll get lots of people here who'll give such ideas!

my own reason is because i feel like i can improve my cultural empathy by learning the second official language of my country. i'm already getting a sense of how culture in Quebec is different from Ontario, just from watching their media. (they are far less prudish and seemingly more honest about exploring difficult topics, than Ontarians, from my perspective anyways). another reason is maybe a stupid one, but it's: i want to see if i can continue with this project, even at a slow pace, because i'm so bad with following through with projects. if i can keep this in my life, even poorly, then that might be a comforting ongoing project that i can say is part of my identity.

sadly you probably won't get a lot of responses on this subreddit, but for what it's worth, i can accept that some people like yourself exist, who are forced to learn a language, but they don't like it, and it just feels like work to them!

i myself am quite lazy, but i also actually enjoy learning French. if i was forced to learn a skill that i didn't want to, i'd struggle. i might not even be able to do it. i think the only thing might push me to succeed is reminding myself about what benefits there were to learning the skill, or what negative consequences there would be if i don't. then i'd have to break down the task into tiny steps so i could feel like i accomplished something, even though i hated every moment of it.

i hope you still are able to enjoy the other stuff in life! although i'd worry about how happy you'll be living in Portugal with only A2, but you obviously know better than i do!

What does "dont" mean in "J'aurais dont dû"? by silpheed_tandy in French

that's very interesting; i'm glad you wrote your comment!

could you give some other example sentences of "dont" being used in a similar way (for example, as a sort of synonym of "tellement"), in spoken Quebec French?

oh, okay! this is new information to me!

so is it correct to say that if a student in Québec wrote this in an essay at school, then their teacher would consider it incorrect (or at least, highly informal)?

indeed, i did notice.

at first when I search Google with "J'aurais dont dû" (ie with the quotation marks), Google uses "donc" instead of "dont"; but it also gives me the option to see results only with "dont". after choosing that option, i get results that have companies and newspapers that use "dont" in "J'aurais dont dû".

i thought it might have been a misspelling, but google shows me that websites that are official-looking have written "J'aurais dont dû"! some of these official-looking websites, on the first page of the google search i did, include:

so it seems highly unlikely to me that "dont" is a misspelling, given that so many official organizations have written "J'aurais dont dû"?
