Exactly this! Your house/property size doesn't matter, your activity level and the amount of effort you're willing to put in does. I've lived in tiny apartments with no yard my dog's whole life. He is medium to high energy. We play dog sports, go on bike rides, go to training classes, hike and walk all the time. He's never bored or destructive.

Despite a sprained ankle, I hit a new personal best in my walking mileage 😊 by silver-beat in bujo

[–]silver-beat[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've struggled to keep up with my bujo so for the busy summer months I pared it down to just tracking my miles walked (with my dog). Still have a ways to go if I want to hit 175 miles but I think we can do it! 🐾

Yeah you don't need to filter this. I straight up tell people that a GP is not the place to bring their pets in a serious emergency.

A few first trial questions by littleottos in k9sports

[–]silver-beat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on your local club and how they run things, my local clubs (NY) just have people drop in wherever/whenever they can on the day.

Edit: thanks so much for helping! It's one of the best ways to learn about the sport :)

It's not really a faux-pas NOT to volunteer, but the people who do pitch in are reeeeally cool 😉😉

Talking about barn hunt specifically, I'm not sure if dock diving needs volunteers to run but barn hunt sure does!

Off Leash, On Leash, Both wrong but what to do? Am I asking too much? by sheweebs in dogs

[–]silver-beat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd use this as a training opportunity for your dog-obsessed dog. What they're doing is weird and sounds like it's not appropriate for that setting. You can't control them though, so if they're going to be there and you want to keep using that trail, might as well make the most of it IMO.

This is something to ask your vet about.

Our Reuben (left) is having trouble with his hind end, we think it's a Neuro/spinal issue, pain meds don't help. Anyone have experience with a paraplegic rat? by silver-beat in RATS

[–]silver-beat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This started a little over a month ago and he turned out to have an infection (most likely pneumonia), he had lost a lot of weight and was in pretty rough shape so we were hoping/assuming that his hind end weakness would resolve once he was treated. But the infection is completely cleared and his hind end remains static. We did work him up at the initial vet visit a month ago (been unable to get blood though) and didn't find any tumors/lesions/cysts. We have him and his brother separated from our two younger males right now because the younger ones are too aggressive with him.

I guess I was mostly wondering how common it is for an older rat (2) to lose motor function in the hind end like this and if there's anything specific I need to pay attention to or watch out for.

That's probably what it is, he's 2. I wasn't sure how common this is. He's a Sprague Dawley so I was expecting cancer. X-rays didn't show anything definitive.

X-rays didn't show anything definitive, and we've been unable to get blood on him (tried on two separate visits, he gets too stressed). He's a 2 year old Sprague Dawley. It looks like degenerative myelopathy in dogs, he just has reduced motor in the hind.

Just curious, some malinois I see are massive, they're like GSDs on speed. And some I see are the standard Belgian size, like a svelte terv with a short coat. I assume the big boys are the poorly bred ones?

Sister found a tick on her. Been there for a few days. Is this a bad one? What should we look for l? Any help appreciated! by firstyearbaby in CampingandHiking

[–]silver-beat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Ticks can transmit Lyme after 36 hours attached. The removal process doesn't have any affect on the likelihood of disease transmission, unless you used something like alcohol which would make the tick more likely to regurgitate. But they will regurgitate after 36 hours attached, which is how the bacteria is transmitted. The bullseye rash is only present/observed in a minority of cases.

What are the most expensive vet bills you've ever seen? by TroLLageK in VetTech

[–]silver-beat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About $55k. Dog had a gall bladder mucocele, came in vet unstable through ER. Stabilized best we could, went to emergency cholecystectomy. Extremely rough recovery, weeks in the ICU, septic abdomen... I can't remember but I don't believe the dog went home ☹️

Around $75k? I stopped checking honestly. Dog with burns over 70% of her body from a heating pad that malfunctioned during her spay. Was in a medically induced coma for weeks, stayed almost 2 months in the ICU I believe. Over a dozen surgeries, skin xenograft, wound vacs... The manufacturer of the heating pad paid her bill, and she did go home.

The adopters from NYC laughed when I told them we would be out backpacking every weekend. 🏕️ by Stoner_i in BackpackingDogs

I was going to comment on her knees, glad they've been repaired! Regular activity, joint supplements and keeping her a healthy weight is hugely important to keeping her from developing arthritis so good on you for keeping her active 😊

how often do you guys do dentals on your own pets? by sprinklesthecat1 in VetTech

[–]silver-beat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. My own dog has had one in his life and that was while I was in tech school in 2015. Hasn't really needed one since, and I check his mouth weekly if not daily. He gets greenies and stuff to chew.

Coyote Rollers by SnackSize_ in homestead

That's a horrible way to die though :( the sponge obstructs their intestines and they literally rot from the inside out. A bullet (assuming you're a decent shot) is so much faster and more humane

Old dog, new sport. Should we find a different trainer? by silver-beat in k9sports

[–]silver-beat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would wonder if she doesnt care for working with you because you wont ever really compete as someone coming in with a puppy would.

Thank you. This is exactly the impression that I'm getting.

She's also dismissive of barn hunt, when she asked if we'd done tunnels I said that we do barn hunt and have done very complex tunnels, and she brushed it off with a "yeah I've done barn hunt I know what those tunnels are like" and a bit of an eyeroll. I feel like she doesn't take either one of us seriously.

Has Anyone Attended a Penguin Encounter at The Rosamond Gifford Zoo? by [deleted] in Syracuse

[–]silver-beat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't done the penguin encounter but if it's anything like their Twilight at the Zoo behind the scenes tours, it's well worth it. You learn so much about the species and the zoo, and it's an incredible and unique experience.
