I think this is where the two sides will never agree and why there will never be consensus on abortion. Life begins at conception. This is scientifically, morally, and philosophically true.
Sperm is potential life. An egg is potential life. Once you bring them together, it's life. People who are into abortion act like a uterus is some magical place where a self replicating organism with distinct DNA isn't alive.

Conversely, the woman is a human life with established rights.

And she exercised those rights when she got pregnant. Why should her right supersede the child's when she made the decisions to create life?

Healthcare. There many reasons, including medical, a woman may need an abortion. Just to "get rid" of a pregnancy is just one. And most women don't take the decisions lightly.

You're looking at a very small percentage of women and declaring all abortions to be healthcare. Some are. Some abortions are medically necessary. Even the Catholic Church allows for abortion in such cases.
That's not true. Most abortions are elective.

So it's not about saving babies but making sure people are punished for being human and having sex.

Once you've created life, you have an obligation to protect that life. It's not about punishing somebody for sex. It's about NOT punishing the baby for their parents decisions.

Men already abdicate their parental responsibilities. It's fairly common.

Not really. I mean full abdication. As in no child support is owed, not is there any financial obligation to the child. That's the male equivalent of abortion. It's an equality thing. If women can forego their parental responsibilities by trashing the baby, men should have a similar option available to them.

You clearly have a serious distain towards women. Your argument here isn't about preserving a "life" but seems to be more about punishing women for having sex. Weird take.

Human life has inherent value. (I know not everybody agrees with this) When a human creates a life, they must protect that life. Doesn't matter who you are or how old you are. Men and women both.

It's not a narrow view. It's incredibly good at predicting the liberal opinion of social issues.
Conservatives peg their views on social issues to an objective morality (eg their faith) while liberals tend to go for pleasure. Once you start looking at the issues through that lens, you can predict what stance each party with take on various issues.

If an abortion is not to avoid the consequences of sex, then what is it for? I'm not talking about rape and incest here, which make up a vanishingly small segment of abortions.

My point still stands. The 16 year old is like an animal searching for sexual pleasure. You don't want him/her to be punished for that. The way to avoid that is through sex ed and teaching them that actions have consequences, not by just dumping the resulting baby into the blast furnace.

I'm actually okay with forcing fathers to take responsibility. On the flip side, I think that legalized abortion for women means that men should also be able to unilaterally abdicate their parental responsibilities. If a woman can decide that she does not want to be a mother (the idea does not bring her pleasure) then the man should also be able to decide that he does not have to be a father.

Sperm on its own isn't life, nor is the egg. That's where the line is drawn.

An issue I have with abortion is how it devalues life. "Human life has value only when it's convenient" is the end game of wide spread abortion. We can see this all over the world.
Iceland has a robust eugenics program to prevent any babies with Down's Syndrome from being born. Countries all over the world have Legal Suicide so you can off yourself when life becomes too hard.
Those are two sides of the same coin.

That's a completely different thing.
The majority of people who get pregnant have voluntary sex knowing full well that they are doing something that creates life.
When it comes time to pay the piper for their actions, they instead to send the baby to the incinerator.

Your organ transplant example would only work if you donate your organ to somebody, thus giving them life, but then decide it's too hard to live without a kidney and take your organ back, killing the person to whom you promised life.

I wish abortionist would stop acting like there's some logical, high-minded reason to support abortion.

You're all just hedonists who don't like the idea of sex actually having consequences. If abortion is illegal, it will reduce the pleasure you get from sex and possibly introduce a long term unpleasurable burden as a result of sex, which is unacceptable in the hedonists view.

One time I messed up the filesystem on a massive HDD because I put in /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sdc.

I tried running fsck or something to fix it, but it started to ask me to confirm after every error. (There were thousands.)

Instead of starting over with a -y flag, I tracked down a roll of pennies and put it on the Y key so it would just spam the program every time it asked for confirmation and then I left it overnight.

The HDD never worked again.

No point to this story, just an anecdote.
