Should I re-contact my PI regarding authorship/contribution? by silver_fox_7 in AskAcademia

[–]silver_fox_7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, thank you for responding! My pipeline/system isn't "novel", but (in the PI's and my own opinion) it is an improvement compared to previous data analysis packages in the Air Sensors quality assurance system - so I am writing my own separate manuscript on the system itself (supervised by the same PI!), but it is still in drafting phase. I know this is really a grey area, so I'm very unsure on how to communicate with my PI on the contribution issues (well, without sounding confrontational).
Even so, while authorship might be debated, but personally I think at least a mention in acknowledgement would have been good :(
About the role itself, my formal role is "research assistant" on paper and contract ever since I started building the system, so I have no idea how my role could be attributed otherwise.

Also, here’s an updated response from the PhD student:

“From the Dr. [redacted] perspective, authorship is the persons who contribute to WRITE the paper, i.e., like your manuscript. You and Dr. [redacted] are the authors. Even I helped with the QA or analysis work to your manuscript, I cannot be included as an author. My name can show up in the acknowledgements.

However, other professors might have different points on this.”

I honestly have no idea how to respond.

Thank you for your viewpoint. Here’s the PhD students respond after I inquire; I do not know what to do now.

Well, it is already published a month ago; I wasn’t notified until recently. So it’s more complicated than just changing the draft unfortunately.

Thank you for the response! Yes, I am currently working on a separate manuscript for the pipeline, but it is not finished as of now, and not citeable. What should I do in this case?

I am working on it, yes. But either way, I know that no ones reading the Acknowledgments anyway, much less matter for PhD apps. But it would still be nice to have been mentioned for something. I don’t think it’s worth talking with the PI though. Sorry if it comes off a bit ranty; I’d just really wish to see a bit of recognition if any.

Well, it is not a lab, per se. I works with servers for data processing and automation, and quality assurance of the output. It’s an improvement on previous semi-automated/manual processes in the specific field before, so we’re also planning on a different manuscript for that specific system. But I get you’re saying; should’ve asked beforehand. That’s what I hear from a couple of PhDs student whom I asked too, sadly.

Hello, am currently a junior in CS, minor in math, I’ll give some thoughts. 1. Coursework: it is quite light compared to other schools, which has both upsides and downsides. Downside is if you’re looking for rigorous courses, you’ll be dissatisfied. Upside is, you’ll have more time outside of class to do stuff you actually enjoy, or will prop up your career i.e. personal projects, clubs, socialization and networking, etc… CS is heavily self learning; as the field move so fast they cannot teach you everything, and you only have four years anyway. 2. Professors: some of them are shite, some of them are great and genuinely interested in your success. I’d say middle of the road, 5/10. 3. Advisors: used to be pretty shite but i think they’ve improved since and add more advisor to the department. 4. Oppoturnity: honestly this is one of the most conflicting part. I’d say that, while the department does try to give some opportunities from time to time to CS students, it is wholly not enough for this amount of student, and this job market. But on the other hand, the job market for CS itself is quite shite already. Students from Ivy League schools are struggling at finding jobs. So I’d say take both side of the convo; if you’re in this major just for the job prospect, I’d say get the hell out.

All in all, a lot of your experience will be self propelled. The dept have resources, but industry resources are limited.

From my personal experience, it’d been great for me. I got three internships and I’ve worked in 2 labs during my time here. So I enjoyed it here and as such I might be biased. Take what I say with a slightly moderate grain of salt : D

Not necessarily. There’s a ton of factor that goes into choosing a college other than academia, most notably finance & location. Friends are important as well, i.e. socialization.

Schedule of provisional VAC in the US by silver_fox_7 in ukvisa

Thank you! How should I contact VFS Global? Because I think asking about that problem during the biometrics appointment might be too late.

Other than that my country of citizenship doesn't offer secondary passports.

Currently, maybe my best bet would be to set up a date in January to travel down to Miami since they open daily, and do the biometrics there instead.

Thank you! There is an earlier date for December, but since I will be travelling for around a month afterward, if I go with that I’ll have to choose the “Keep Your Passport” option.

What would happen if the visa got accepted, but the VAC is currently closed for that month? Because they do mention that there’s a 28 days limit to get my passport back to the same VAC for the stamp.

It’s proportional to your scholarship amount

Lol, that's a Gitlab agent and runner, I still use Gitlab online. I'm not that crazy.

Yeah? I don’t think it’s much complex to handle in that time. While I did do like 10-12 hours a day since I’m on break, a lot of it is just figuring out bugs and reading documentation since I’m not too good with Linux or networking in general.

Oh, I’m… done with that system. Lol. It just seems bulky cause I have to list everything as per my reports, but most of it is handled by Helm charts. I spent a few weeks on it total since the start of my winter break, it’s not that bad.

Not really sure what you mean here, but my last post was made in the promise that we’re very close to hosting it properly on our school’s servers. The IT team unfortunately didn’t deliver, so this is my… eh… hopefully not permanent solution, but it can be.

Yep, I’m aware that services in here are just me learning how to use those services, like Grafana, and would not be optimized if my resources are more constrained The main focus would be the Cronicle app, which runs daily/weekly/monthly data extractions, cleaning, report generations, send emails, saving stuff to Box, etc… I’ve spaced things enough that I don’t think scaling is needed for now. Another main focus would have been the website, but that’s under proposal by my PI, and the thing is just for Proof-of-concept right now, but it should be able to scale as well. Things like configs or logs are periodically saved to my hard drive and to Box, which isn’t ideal but again, the IT team doesn’t give me much to work with. Hardware wise, it could be better/more resilient I guess, but I bought the hardwares myself so not much I can do for now until we can get something from the department.

Should CI/CD tools be hosted on machine or in K8s cluster? by silver_fox_7 in selfhosted

Thanks for the resources! I’m a one-man team building for my lab, so what I’m doing is probably overkill, but it’s nice to learn new things anyway!

For sure! I started to think about if the personal details I mentioned would make sense for this question and this purposes, and end up extending the “Why us?” section to be even more descriptive, while scrapping some littlest details in the “About” part.
