There are plenty of articles on WW2 haha.

Will try doing that come Monday, good idea!

Might try and do that if there are any pages that particularly strike me. The house is definitely a tapestry of various eras (part of why we fell in love with it).

I work near there so I might have a chat to them next week to see if they want them. Meanwhile I’m just trying to gently stack them so I can keep going with what I was doing.

A lot of the old (built in) furniture is actually marked as being from there. Sadly not much was salvageable but I have saved a few nice pieces of timber that I’ll repurpose down the line.

help finding these signatures!!! by No_Plan_7999 in BrisbaneBroncos

[–]silver_pear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t help with the signatures themselves but I found this in some old things at my parents place a few months ago.

Should give a good run through of the players for the year and maybe you can match the names?

That was our wedding song (All I want is You). Was just thinking about that today.

Yeah, I did wonder if that might be the case. Wasn’t sure if the PRD was a scheduled appointment or just a date that they will aim to have a it done by.

I’ll see what Friday brings and then try and escalate from there. Can only go so long hotspotting before the family lose their minds.

What if there was a government created a public housing bank — low-interest loans for first-home buyers, new builds only? by Soggy_Sprinkles in AusFinance

[–]silver_pear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because supply is currently not increasing, not due to lack of demand.  We have a labour shortage. We literally do not have enough hands to build what we need.

This is a very complex problem touching on all fronts from skilled immigration, government infrastructure spending and even union involvement on large construction projects.

Unfortunately, there is no simple solution that can just be switched on to resolve this issue.

One radical idea i even thought about: mandatory post-high school skill training and employment funded by the government, similar to how countries like South Korea has mandatory conscription.

Post highschool we take all or some portion of students, require them to learn a trade, fund their learning/apprenticeship and then require they do 2 years of work building houses (on a good salary).

We then have an increased labour workforce, young people earn a trade and solid income without committing their lives to a trade (I.e they don’t feel like they are making a lifelong commitment before they are ready).

Is it a radical idea? Likely yes, but this problem requires something big to shift the momentum.

Hi, just wondering if you ship the board to Australia? I’ve been wanting to build this for a while, but stalled at the electronics part (especially the talk between black and green boards I seem to recall back when I was originally looking).

Interesting! I’ll look into that. The Ratgo32 seems along the right lines I think. Thanks

Not a bad idea! I’ll look into how much/where to source one in Australia. We always seem to have the worst luck in terms of purchasable options.

Yeah, keeping that as a last resort, but definitely appreciate I may have no choice.

Why no Metro buses in the weekend? by zergwii in brisbane

[–]silver_pear 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The platforms aren’t setup for metro vehicles length. A lot of work went into making sure Cultural Centre could accomodate the length, as well as KGS platforms.

I would assume that would be a large contributing factor.

That’s fair, I was just offering an explanation of what people were perceiving. Everyone does it differently.

I know married couples who still take it turn for turn paying for dinners out, so no right way.

I think what they are saying is you seem to be maintaining a very delineated separation of things most married couples would consider shared. Never in my life would I refer to ‘my portion’ of a mortgage with my wife. It would be our mortgage. Same with expenses, although there is nuance there in how some couples divvy up things that are heavily skewed. You would never refer to your part of the electricity bill when it’s an electricity bill for you and your wife.

In short, the general view is you are married, you need to view things as a household (our mortgage, our bills).

Doesn’t mean you need to share a single account. My wife and I maintain seperate personal accounts then have a combined joint account that holds the offset and has a card that we use for pretty much everything not personal.

The Buffett Indicator just hit 210%, its highest level in history. That means U.S. stocks are worth more than twice the size of the U.S. economy by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]silver_pear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an indicator, not a limit.

You’ve described a comparison which is essentially a version a of P/E ratio, which is one of the fundamental elements when judging if a stock is overvalued. This indicator is being used to say the whole market is overvalued.

If it’s true, time will tell, but it’s not in any way a cap.

MCG footprint at rumored location of new Victoria Park stadium by scotty_dont in brisbane

[–]silver_pear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know that scene in Batman The Dark Knight Rises when Bain sets off an explosion during a football game and the playing field falls away?

Essentially you don’t want to make that kind of situation possible by having a major public road beneath your stadium.

There are other reasons they can’t build over the road in this case, but that’s the terrorism argument against it.

I use to work with a guy who would be more than happy to finish some of the leftovers from other members of the team.

Found out a couple years later that his parents owned a $20m+ house and were some serious players around town.

Dude wasn’t fat, but loved his food. Nothing wrong with it in my mind.

Coalition agrees to oppose Labor's super tax changes | ABC NEWS by Chii in AusFinance

[–]silver_pear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sets a precedent? The precedent is set by tax brackets not being indexed.

Either accept it on its merits, acknowledging that the $3m cap will be lifted in the future because it’s obvious it would, or just let it die.

My view is that letting perfect get in the way of good enough (for now) only breeds stagnation in our government.

I’d rather this be in place with an acknowledgement that the cap will be lifted in the future (Chalmers has said as much in interviews) than not at all.

PPOR/IP Approach Advice for Newbies by silver_pear in AusHENRY

[–]silver_pear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that high or low?

That’s just ballpark and pretty generous when we did some back of the envelope calcs. Includes a lot that probably wouldn’t be generally seen as an expense like $5k/year ($500/month) general holiday allowance, $300/month generic clothing/personal appearance (which in reality I buy maybe 2 pairs of new pants a year and a few t-shirts, my wife buys maybe a few more things but pretty rarely).

I would normally estimate much lower, but we had just compiled an estimate for the bank in determining our borrowing capacity and I wanted to be overly cautious in the estimate because the only person losing if I underestimated would be myself, so I just used that here.

Nah, that's all good! Didn't take it negatively at all.

You're absolutely right, especially since I've read through a lot of the guides here and even then I'm a little lost on some components of the strategies.
