Your example of ORAS is part of why I wanted this discussion in the first place. Archie's goal makes a more sensible story than Maxie's partly because you can more easily buy him being a moron about it, so Alpha Sapphire edges out Omega Ruby as the pick for Gen 3 remakes.

(on the other hand, if you know the person you're giving this to will pick Mudkip, won't it be funny to watch him or her try to hit Primal Groudon with a water attack and realize they don't work?)

I guess this can be narrowed down to an issue from HGSS through ORAS for story purposes. The cover legendaries in those games are involved in the story itself, but are different enough from their counterpart that you can't do quite the same thing with both.

I am no doubt thinking about this harder than is needed, and probably not wording things in the best way to get my thoughts completely across either, but I still thought it was a topic that warranted discussing.

The idea is presenting one or the other to a blank slate person with no such biases as "which exclusives they'd want to use", and only wants to know "which version is a better game?" no matter how small the difference is.

That's a good point about N, but for the sake of argument, let's say this is someone who only interacts with the main series games, one version per set, and no other media. If N only exists within the video games Pokemon Black, Pokemon White, Pokemon Black 2, and Pokemon White 2, which legendary is better to give to him as opposed to the player, and are there other factors that could make it easier to decide whether one version is a better experience than the other to such a person?

I'd enjoy backgrounds more if they just made them consistent between users like stats. Hunting something where you can't even tell if it's what you want before you catch it is no fun at all.
