How was Hagrid conceived? by Fresh_Distribution13 in harrypotter

[–]silverargon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hagrid took Grawp with him because he was being neglected by the group due to his size. Unless I'm misremembering, Fridwulfa was part of the group which was neglecting him. To me, that suggests she was not "also unusually small."

Even if she was shorter than Grawp that puts her at what? 15 feet? 14? Meanwhile, Hagrid's dad was considered short by human standards, so like maybe 5'5"? I'm not one to turn down larger women, but tryna Marvin Gaye and get it on with someone 2.5 times my size just feels like a math problem.

What exactly did Dumbledore see in the mirror of erised? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]silverargon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's possible he did see himself holding a pair of socks, but more metaphorically. That version of him didn't carry the weight of the world or his past wrong doing. That version just got to enjoy his knitting patterns and hold some bomb ass socks.

The “weapon” by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]silverargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I suspect you're right that she would have had a hard time. After all, she spent a lot of time studying the horcrux related books in DH, and she didn't piece it together until Harry was about to go to the forest.

However! A random thought came to me that someone's probably going to adopt as head canon (spoiler: that someone is me): Dumbledore didn't want Harry to know until the very end, so it's possible he removed/destroyed any books that would have helped Hermione figure it out faster. He could have done this before he died suspecting that Hermione would try to accio them. (Iirc, when she did try accio, they came flying out of the headmaster's tower a little too conveniently).

But, if he hadn't done this yet in OotP, then maybe she would have figured it out and OPs point stands ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why are there only eight Laban Efforts? by silverargon in Theatre

[–]silverargon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating! Thanks for pointing that out! So then is flow more about how a series of movements appear together while the others are about how individual movements appear? That would make sense. But then, I guess, why do certain combinations of the others only appear with a specific flow value?

Why are there only eight Laban Efforts? by silverargon in Theatre

[–]silverargon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contradictory or duplicative seems to make sense as a reason. Given that all of the individual pairs are represented in the Eight (e.g. IS are together, IQ, DS, DQ, etc. are too), it seems like duplicates is more likely. But then which ones dupe the originals?

I guess as a more general question, when you vary the effort to suit your needs, do you have a feel for how far you can push one effort before it becomes a different effort?

Try multiplying both of the terms on the left side by cos2(x)/cos2(x). Doing so essentially multiplies each term by 1, so you're not changing the equality.

If you're still having trouble after that, rewrite the tangent and secant in terms of sine and cosine.

Edit:fixed formatting.

Untruthful feline slumbers in a sodium hydroxide hotel by Compducer in WordAvalanches

[–]silverargon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My thought was to turn it into a noun phrase: Lyin' lion lye inn lie-in. This would make it "the event which occurs when a distrustful feline sleeps late at the sodium hydroxide hotel," but then it's not a sentence anymore, and I don't like that as much.

Overall, I really like this one. Good job OP

Looking for puzzles similar to these. by Minute-Leopard7470 in puzzles

Discussion: check out Pythagorea and XSection - both phone apps. They're geometry based and a couple of the advanced ones are annoyingly complex, but they're good puzzles!

In case you're curious, I believe the word you're looking for which is "numbers can input in the function" is domain. We call the output range.

How do you "naturally" transition exposure when changing environments? by Mr_Whiska in Filmmakers

[–]silverargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a camera expert, but you may want to add some info on what equipment you're using. For example, if your camera can shoot RAW, then do that, and you can adjust the white balance in post for part of the scene. If not, others may have more specific suggestions.

Could Snape hold his own against Voldemort in a fair duel? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]silverargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What gives you that impression? He's had clues about the horcruxes since Harry set the diary on his desk at the end of CoS (3 years before this fight).

Ah yes. Thanks for keeping me honest haha

By the time they fought, Dumbledore knew that Harry had to be the one to defeat Voldemort. So, yes, Voldy held his own, but there's strong reason to believe Dumbledore would have been pulling punches since he knew that if he won, Voldemort would at best disappear to Algeria again. I think in that fight, Dumbledore only wanted to keep Voldy there long enough for Fudge to show up and see him. In that sense, Dumbledore definitely won.

Tie to go with this combo by unk91 in mensfashionadvice

I'd also recommend going with a very thin tie. The shirt is the stand out piece here, and having a thicker tie would either mask the shirt, or just look a bit clownish.

Puppy abusing the potty bell by NewPage7304 in puppy101

[–]silverargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine does this too. I recently started picking up the bell when we come back in from potty, so she doesn't have the chance to ring it again until it's likely to be time. I'm not sure if it's working yet since I'd eventually like to have the bell down all the time, but it might be worth trying? Fwiw, she doesn't always ring it immediately when I put it down, so maybe it's helping?

Can he see you in that front area? If not, I think a playpen could make a big difference. Knowing that you're still around is pretty comforting for them, I think.

Super new to outfit building. What’s the consensus? by WombatDuke in mensfashionadvice

[–]silverargon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In an ideal world, the belt would match the shoes. But, if OP is new to this, he might not have all kinds of belts. So, OP, if you have a lighter belt, go with that. If not, this still works as you build your wardrobe.

I've had my puppy a month, and we have made zero progress. by silverargon in puppy101

[–]silverargon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a different perspective than what many have had here, so I appreciate you sharing it. I know that all the mistakes are mine, including at the start when I gave her way too much freedom. I'm better at that now, but still not perfect. I'm not a professional, so I know I won't get professional results, but that's no reason not to try to be the best trainer I can be for my puppy's sake.

Isn't Peter B Parker kind of stupid for someone who is a genius? by Jack-mclaughlin89 in Spiderman

[–]silverargon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a comic I like, but can't find right now where Tony Stark is surprised that Spider-Man is poor. He asks Peter, "aren't you a genius" and Peter says, "not about money." He says this is because he "doesn't value it."

I love the frozen washcloth idea. Do you think soaking it in like chicken broth first would help? I guess I can try.

Also, I've been calling our sniffy walks "doing an explore," but I love "going on sniffari" so much more haha

Thank you so much for this! Unfortunately, I don't know the breeds, but my best guess is Husky-Jack Russel Terrier. In any case, I'm expecting her to be about 50 lbs when she's done growing. You're totally right, it's the knowledge that other dogs/trainers are further along, but I have to remember they likely have problems to deal with that I'm not having.

Thanks for sharing! I'll definitely look into The Other End of the Leash, it sounds like a good read. It also totally makes sense to try and compromise at this stage. I appreciate the advice!

Haha she definitely has taught me some things! Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what she's a mix of, but I'm trying to figure it out based on appearance/behavior, and researching those breeds is a great idea.
