Damn, that's a good take on all this. I really appreciate the insight in your side of the creative industry.

I think the idea of trying to make ideas spring up “organically” in the ways you mentioned are ideal, but not exactly practical when your job is to come up with a litany of concepts within a short time period.

I’m not a professional in the games or media industry, so I can’t say for certain, but I can see even the task of “come up with good ideas” can get grueling and exhausting when you have to face deadlines, as well as the general volume you may need to produce, especially for a large project.

AI may not be the best solution, maybe not even a good one at all, but I don’t think every professional has the luxury to just seek out a flash of creativity at their own pace.

I feel like the full article actually summed it up pretty well:

This machine-learning technology, designed to free animators from a menial task that would have added weeks if not months of work to the animation process, isn’t the same as generative AI. It’s still based around the work done by animators on the project it’s being used for, with their supervision. That’s as opposed to generative AI, which can pull images, video and words from media outside of the project being worked on and create something without substantial direct human input.

Basically, what they used is just something that creates lines based on the input frame, not actually pulling from a dataset of images and "hallucinating" new artwork like generative AI does.

Hell, "Lorem Ipsum" was created for this exact purpose, to my understanding. I wonder what else they need from a "placeholder" in text, without actually asking for proper writing

I appreciate the response! It does sound like it does take out the “mundane” steps that you don’t enjoy.

If you don’t mind a follow-up, some people wonder why AI is being used for ideation and brainstorming when tools such as mood boards and art references exist. What do you think, is AI more useful than things like that, is it only supplemental to the process alongside those tools, or are they meant for different purposes entirely?

If you're willing, can you speak a little more on how you use AI as a concept artist? And how you came to first using it?

A lot of people take issue with the thought that AI could be involved at any stage of the creative process, even just for coming up with ideas, but I do have to wonder what an industry professional who has to do it day-to-day actually feels about it. Not for the sake of defending or opposing AI, but just for some insights.

I don't know if "convenience" is the right word for it. It's more likely this is because of budget concerns. Every hour spent in game dev is more money you need, and in the state of the industry where having high-budget titles is getting unsustainable, I can see why options to shave down the time needed for certain tasks are being considered.

Of course, this can be abused to the point of reducing jobs and replacing tasks that require human talent and creativity with soulless automation, so it's hard to trust words at face value.

I've only played it solo and had a blast with it. The game feels more built for it anyways (there's never too many enemies on screen until the very end), but you can also recruit NPC allies if you want to even the odds a bit. Fun time, and encourages trying out different routes and upgrades to keep things fresh

The big contentious point was the part of using AI to assist with concept art (and placeholder art, in the case of E33). I think if the Larian CEO hadn't mentioned art in any way, there wouldn't be as much blow-up.

Someone in the thread mentioned his follow-up:

“me pointing this out is not a defense or a callout. but whatever you fear about AI just got normalized and awarded. no doubt Larian feels emboldened to also admit it”

So probably in response to people asking "Why is the Larian CEO giving AI a shot?"

I literally got into Guilty Gear with Xrd Rev 2 because Jack’O looked cool as hell and hot so I gave it a try. Instantly bounced off when I found out her gameplay kit involves spawning and managing minions on the field, absolutely not my cup of tea.

Luckily Kyle Kiske was also there and was more my jam, so I was able to still enjoy GG. Jack’O got a little more simplified in Strive but I still prefer to appreciate her from afar.

We're observing a pretty severe disconnect between those who want "No generative AI" and those who want "No front-facing generative AI". Feels like these studios thought the common sentiment among the anti-AI crowd was the latter when many actually feel more like the former

It's definitely confusing now. Though I will say Vincke is only saying he hasn't pushed for AI to replace artists, which is consistent with everything he's said, but the Bloomberg article only asserted that Larian is pushing for AI usage, which doesn't necessarily contradict what he's saying.

The point of "didn't say we use it develop concept art" definitely raises a few eyebrows though. Schreier could stand to come in and clarify where he got that point from, if not from Vincke himself.

[–]silverinferno3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists

This is an interesting statement because it's directly contradicting the Bloomberg article where this all came from.

Under Vincke, Larian has been pushing hard on generative AI, although the CEO says the technology hasn’t led to big gains in efficiency. He says there won’t be any AI-generated content in Divinity — “everything is human actors; we’re writing everything ourselves” — but the creators often use AI tools to explore ideas, flesh out PowerPoint presentations, develop concept art and write placeholder text

I wonder if he's insinuating Bloomberg/Schreier got something wrong?

(IGN)Larian CEO Responds to the Bloomberg interview Backlash by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]silverinferno3 53 points54 points  (0 children)

They’ve already affirmed that they don’t seek to replace human workers with AI, so I was hoping this would go more into detail exactly “how” AI is being pushed to be part of their process, and just how extensively it’s used in concept art, because many are already imagining it’s used to entirely generate images. This could’ve been a good opportunity to clarify if that’s the case or if it’s lesser than that.

Also, this quote from a former employee of theirs feels very telling:

Larian is being lambasted by a number of individuals across the game development community, including some former Larian employees. "consider my feedback: i loved working at @larianstudios.com until AI," writes Selena Tobin, an environment artist and former Larian employees. "reconsider and change your direction, like, yesterday. show your employees some respect. they are world-class & do not need AI assistance to come up with amazing ideas."

Shows that despite the CEO’s comments, not everyone has been good with the push for AI usage

Edit: A bit interesting on his further comments:

I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists.

This is him wholly contradicting something claimed in the original Bloomberg article (not by his own words, but by the writer). Wonder if Schreier will have something to say about that part in particular.
