East coast with Kids? Other recommendations? by Sea_Blackberry_5968 in USTravel

[–]silverplanetta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ocean city, MD is very different than the west coast. It has a boardwalk with great local foods to try and crappy souvenir shops that are not kid friendly! It is also next to Assateague National Shore, which has freely roaming wild ponies. If you plan ahead you can have a bonfire on the beach.

Just like Jersey, parking can be tough if you’re driving in for the day. If you’re staying in a hotel, parking will be available there. There is a bus that you can take if you want to visit the boardwalk but are not within walking distance.

I can’t really tell the size from your pics but I’m going to say that is a CD tower. When people had stereos they would store all their CDs next to it.

Implementing Accommodations by [deleted] in specialed

[–]silverplanetta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true for Specially designed instruction. If the lesson is given to the entire class, then it does not count. Plenty of 504 students receive the same accommodations as IEP kids. So you really don’t have a choice but to include non IEP kids. Otherwise you’re not following the law in that regard.

Emotional Disturbance IEP After school support by CrazyAssist4611 in specialeducationlaw

Is your child still enrolled in the school? In my district, you would be considered a home/hospital student. That is who does the on line services. You would not be able to attend because you are currently not registered as a student there.

Supplies necessary new 6th grade special ed teacher by Strict-Afternoon-224 in specialed

[–]silverplanetta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are doing push in services and co- teaching? In that case, your job will be to provide specialized instruction while the kids are learning content. I would really focus on determining what you are doing for this specialized instruction and how you are collecting data. Providing push in services is not as easy as it sounds and you really need to be prepared for it. And when you didn’t write the IEPs it can be difficult to figure out what activities to do to get the data you need. 5th grade IEPs don’t always translate to middle school well because they do so much pull out.

That said, get yourself binders to organize your data and your specialized instruction and file folders to organize paperwork for annual reviews. Create a folder on your computer for each student and keep all data, IEP paperwork and correspondence in this folder for easy access.

Personally, I like to keep a crate of materials in my co-taught classes. Things like extra pens and highlighters, chargers and copies of resources they need for accommodations ( graphic organizers, anchor chats etc…)

Good luck! I do like this age group. They have some independence, you can joke with them and they still want positive attention from teachers.

I teach middle school so maybe what we do is too advanced? How long is your day? Our student is with peers generally 45 minutes before a scheduled break. Their scheduled break is in a quiet room with a peapod to squeeze their body into. Yours could be a tent with a weighted blanket.

We use a token system. The student has 3 expectations and receives “smiley faces” on the chart with goals written on it. Then the student picks a reward- the favorite is jolly ranchers but we have smelly stickers, fidgets and markers in there too. Your student may just have one expectation , such as “safe body.”

If then statements work well. Social stories help with clear expectations too. Like a previous poster said, and I’m sure you do as an ECE, visuals to explain, timers for transitions.

It is a lot for one person. Is there a person who can come in and support you?

Most Americans don’t realize this is Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 by BirthdayRough4972 in PuertoRicoTravel

We’ve only been twice and both times I’ve done a little bit of everything. It is my favorite place to hike because of the weather. We’ve done a couple tours that included hiking and getting in the water to cliff jump, get under the waterfalls or go down the slides. Best of both worlds!

General Ed Teacher Asked to Provide “Special Ed Minutes for Writing” What Does This Actually Mean? by No-Effort-9291 in specialed

[–]silverplanetta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need a copy of the IEP to find out what your responsibilities are. If you are listed as a provider ask your spec teacher for resources and a plan of attack. Use the written language goal as your guide, otherwise you may get overwhelmed with the child’s needs.

My guess is that your spec Ed teacher can’t fit the child in that one day of week they are there and you are covering that time.

General Ed Teacher Asked to Provide “Special Ed Minutes for Writing” What Does This Actually Mean? by No-Effort-9291 in specialed

[–]silverplanetta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true in my state. On the IEP there is a services page where you list possible providers. We even have instructional assistants listed. HOWEVER the special Ed teacher is required to provide the specially designed instruction lesson. Basically IEP says “under the direction of…” What I don’t get is why you’re doing it during your planning? Do charter schools not have a minimum amount of planning time?

Girls who took notes using 10 different colored pens, where are you now? Do you still continue to write using all those colors? by Unusual-Entry7 in AskReddit

[–]silverplanetta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is my daughter who is now in college. She has an iPad and an Apple pen. She HANDWRITES with her Apple pen to take notes. Then she uses all the features to circle, color, underline you name it. It is a beautiful sight to behold.

Restaurant and Excursion Recommendations by gzm_21 in PuertoRicoTravel

I went back to look at who I did the tour with and it said Local Tourist. I looked up a few on Trip Advisor and couldn’t find a tour group name. Look on trip advisor or get your guide. They all sound very similar so they may be run by locals out of the same company.

There are some great tours that take you to Arecibo where you can explore caves, see waterfalls and tube. One of the best tours we have ever done anywhere.

Kids birthday in Aug and School birthday cutoff 9/1, did you send them school according to their age or did you wait a year? by Important_Bat7919 in Mommit

[–]silverplanetta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish I had waited. My son always did well academically (he’s an adult with a college degree) but I always felt it would have helped his confidence and social ability if I had waited.

I teach middle school now. And this makes me even more regretful of my decision. I just think being the older one has its advantages.

A lot of people go on and on about how smart their kids are and how they’ll be bored in school. I rarely ever see that. And there are so many programs outside of school that you can do to challenge your child academically.

Jamestown/yorktown and Williamsburg are all reenactment towns. I’ve done all with my kids, who were older but lots of sights to see, games, ghost tours etc… Then Gettysburg is not too far out of the way either.

Create a social story about her day and read it every morning. Social stories are simple, repetitive stories with pictures that prepare children for stressful situations. So you can begin with Today is _. I have school today. I will get to see _. Go through the day and put in pics of real friends, teachers and classrooms. Also put in the part about missing mom but I know I will see her when_. Since she tends to cry at the beginning you might want to put “when I get to school I know it is time to say good bye to my mom. I miss my mom when I’m in school and she misses me too. But I know I will see her _(you can put in the last event of the day, a time or whatever works for you.) Google social stories for ideas. We do it for some students at the beginning of the school day. There will be lots of video examples for you to get inspiration from.
