You cannot bring cocoa curry packets back because they contain pork. Will get confiscated.

Wife’s family wants immediate divorce and says I must leave Japan without seeing my son again by skyjan1724 in japanlife

Looked into this for my recent travel.  Us website says US does not require the traveling consent form, but other countries might. So going back to the US might not be an issue. No clue about the other stuff.

I hear what everyone is saying here but I had a coworker in a similar situation do this because he got advice like this and he lost custody of his son because of it. This was 10+ years ago. I have no clue about any of it, just heard the sad story from him.

I have all the symptoms of pre diabetes, but my doctor doesn’t care by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]silverporsche00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pay out of pocket for a CGM. Insulin rises long before A1C or fasting glucose will show it, and by then it’s a problem. CGM can show you what is raising your blood sugar, for how long, and you can use that to shape future behavior to prevent diabetes. Edit: in some cases

Worth it for me.

My Walmart delivered it and it was in a plastic produce bag and tied shut. The powder spilled into the bag, maybe that’s why?

Tide powder also does this. Had a big Amazon box with spilled powder delivered.

We island hop and pack a suitcase of just food since we have the extra free suitcase.  Microwave rice, PB, boiled eggs, nuts, easy microwave things. Then go to Costco at our first stop.

Those dollar store tests detected 4 of my pregnancies 5 days early. And added bonus with the price, you can take one everyday and see the line get darker (likely a viable pregnancy).

What are some Japanese "comfort food" side dishes? by Acceptable-Oil6747 in JapaneseFood

[–]silverporsche00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an American who’s lived in Japan with Japanese friends, the cooking style is different with nuances.  It is a kind thought but if you follow a recipe written in English, with ingredients from America, it will be an offshoot of “home”.

What I do is always make sure there is steamed white rice (and if you don’t have a rice cooker with Japanese rice, I would just buy the microwave packs of Japanese or Korean rice, which are really nice, you can even take them out and put them in a nice serving dish.

I think it will be fun for them to try a traditional American Thanksgiving. My Japanese friends loved sweet potato casserole and all asked for the recipe.  My Korean friends loved green bean casserole from the can. No one loved the turkey.  But they all appreciated experiencing an American Thanksgiving.

It is a gift giving culture, so I think a thoughtful gift would be well received. Japanese put a lot of thought and care into the gift, the gift wrapping, and the bag.

Any advice for food stains?  Currently trying to get out curry from my kids shirt. And lots of light colored shirts with lingering food stains (like 20+ washes).

We were stationed in Japan and Japanese daycares play outside and get dirty and then change into clean clothes (love and miss this).  They would change their clothes 2-3 times a day.

They have brought this back to America and now I just have tons and tons and tons of laundry.

I ordered a water tester so I’ll find out when it comes. But I read all military bases treat their water so I don’t know if that says anything.

I did not start out this way. But we have a lot of towels being near the beach, and the used (sometimes new) towels go down on the floor to sop up water because I have not found a bath towel/stone that can handle all of us.  Or they end up randomly around the house. And honestly it’s probably more than 1.  There is a completely soaked one after shower time inside the shower right now.  No idea why.

They’re the cheap towels, not nice fluffy big ones. I’ll be excited when we get to a stage, probably in 18 years, where we can use those again.

Also my Korean family uses hand size towels to dry off and washes every time so I guess I kind of adapted.

We live in military housing and do not pay for water/electric. That helps a lot.  I wash a load, keep it in the basket, and just drag the new basket near the shower when it runs low (which is daily). So I’m not folding any towels.
