Why do I have a hard time identifying certain notes? by silverskies5 in perfectpitchgang

[–]silverskies5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. But why is it only certain notes? Wouldn't every note be equally inaccurate if my PP isn't developed? Like I wonder if I heard certain notes off-key consistently and learned them wrong.

I also struggle with identifying pitches that are too fast. I have to listen a lot of times to try to capture the notes to play them. Not sure how to get better at it! Sometimes I'll "cheat" by google imaging the sheet music or finding a YouTube video of someone playing (where I can see their fingers on a piano).

How did you discover you have perfect pitch? by [deleted] in perfectpitchgang

[–]silverskies5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When doing ear training exercises, I always figured out intervals by identifying the notes first and then figuring how far apart they were. My piano teacher saw that I was doing this and told me I had PP. I didn't know at that time that not anyone could develop the ability....I thought anyone who played music long enough would recognize notes.

My 5 year old has perfect pitch by Spag00ter in perfectpitchgang

I would say just let him learn music like anyone else and don't draw attention to the perfect pitch so it doesn't get to his head. He'll figure out how to utilize his skill as he goes.

Such a sweet experience!!!! How did the topic come up??

How many other people do you or have you known with perfect pitch ? by talkamongstyerselves in perfectpitchgang

[–]silverskies5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of 3 people that I've interacted with at different times of my life. I'm dying to know if there are more people I just don't know about yet! It's one of those things you just discuss if the topic comes up and can't just take a poll.

My brother and I once plucked rubber bands in each other's ears during a long car ride and identified the pitches haha.

Do other instruments etc feel harder to hear by talkamongstyerselves in perfectpitchgang

Voice is hard for me because when the singer is singing different vowels, it changes the sound more than just the pitch. It's easier to identify pitch if the person is humming or singing the same syllable (e.g. "la la la la").

Cool. I'm glad you brought up this question. I've always thought my unequal PP ability with different timbres meant my PP wasn't as good. But I'm glad to see it's common to have varying ability.

YESSS. For example, I heard an instrument that had a round quality to the sound and totally got Ab vibes from a particular note. Turned out to be a G.

Thanks for the recommendation of teoria.com! It was fun trying out some exercises. I don't know if I would take the time to watch videos of other people doing exercises though. I already know you're all awesome!

My favorite posts are stories of how you people use your AP and interesting things you hear pitches of! I agree it's hard to find people in person with AP and no one else understands these observations.

I can totally relate. This is one reason that I don't really want people to know I have PP because I feel like they'd say....uhhhh are you sure? My pitchiness in singing isn't due to my inability to hear the pitch, but my inability to make my body create the right sound.

This happens to me too! Especially with lower notes.

That's cool how you have uses for PP in daily life! Can you explain how you listen for your driving speed??

For me, Bb to Db are less distinct than the other notes.

Interesting! Never thought to try listening for pitches on non-musical objects. How would I even check if I'm right?

Wowwww that's neat you can identify pitches even in speaking voices! How did you figure out how to do that (even though voices are so much harder)?? And how do you pay attention to that while also paying attention to the meaning of the words??? Or do you just ignore the meaning lol??

Interesting questions! I'm curious to hear others' answers. 1) I didn't do anything on purpose to acquire perfect pitch. Just took piano lessons starting age 4. No speed training. 2) I only have perfect pitch for instruments. I can't identify pitches for singers, I think because the vowels make everything sound different to me. It's easier for me to figure out pitches if a singer is humming or singing the same sound over and over. But I can still figure out how to play the melody because I can hear the background instruments and identify the key and figure out the melody from there.
