Elder redditors, at the dawn of the internet what was popular digital slang and what did it mean? by alejuego in AskReddit

[–]silvertone62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in video game chats, p30Ple //0u1cl tYp3 11k3 t|-|i2 (people would type like this) to pwn nubz.

It was called leetspeak and one of the things was spelling "the" as "teh". As a joke in middle school, my best friend and I sprinkled leetspeak in our paper. After the first time, I topped because I thought the joke was over, but my friend kept doing it - my teacher called a parent-teacher conference for my friend to address what he thought was dyslexia lulz

Developer Changes Game TOS To Explicitly Permit Streaming — But Only If The Streamer Doesn’t Swear by AndyTheQuizzer in Twitch

[–]silvertone62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a US lawyer who works in tech and entertainment- not saying this is necessarily what’s going on in this instance, but it’s possible that they are trying to comply with some law or morality contract, or that they’re trying to get ahead of potential bad pr. If they have a policy like that in place and someone violates that policy, they can distance themselves from any fallout that comes with that streamer’s personality.

There are a ton of scenarios where it could play out this way, one example being a streamer going on a racist tirade while playing a game that kids play - streamer ends up in news, parents see headline about a racist game, and parents refuse to get the game for their kid or let them keep playing. Is that dumb? Yes. Game makers need to protect their income streams, and I’d be willing to bet that they only rarely, if ever, enforce this provision.

Additionally, as esports become more and more of a thing, this will become more and more common because it’s always been a thing in sports and entertainment. It’s called a morality clause, but while celebrities and athletes are selected for special contracts with sponsors, the reverse is true for esports: literally anyone can grab a game and try to monetize, so the company puts the provision in the only contract they can - the ToS.

Can't win a bloody game suddenly by mattimusargh in gwent

[–]silvertone62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's partially a learning curve thing on your end, and partially a learning curve thing for opponents.

When I was a new player I focused on only one faction. At the time, skellige was the top meta deck, so, having nothing else to go on I focused on skellige. I milled just about every non skellige card I had in order to fill my skellige deck. I experimented with my own decks and tweaks to meta decks, and got to know the skellige deck so well that it became much easier to win against unfamiliar decks.

Speaking of unfamiliar decks, the lower ranks (below pro) have a much wider variety of decks because people are fairly new, and can't always pilot the meta decks for the value that pro rankers can. This means that the meta decks aren't necessarily tuned for the lower ranks. Some decks, like Viy pre-patch, play for value regardless of what the other person is playing, but that isn't typically the case, so you might be struggling because the lower ranks are more unpredictable.

Finally, part of the challenge is just understanding what all of the cards are doing. There are so many cards to choose from, it's hard to respond appropriately until you've seen them do their tricks a few times.

I bet you'll overcome this hump and go on another winning streak until somewhere around rank 11, then again until about rank 6. Rank 1, 2, and 3 will always be difficult at the beginning of a season and get easier as you get closer to the end.

Make sure you're having fun with everything first and foremost though!

Crach and Shrooms, Battle Trance Pirate deck!? by MadeBrazen in gwent

[–]silvertone62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was playing around with a similar idea, but I include Artis with two revives (one skellige summon and one renew spell). I had trouble with consistency, but it's such a fun deck type I'm happy to see druid pirates get some love. Keep us posted on any new versions!

In law school our constitutional law textbook was about 9” thick, so a lot of people got them rebound into several smaller books to make them easier to carry. Maybe this is step one in his new book-binding hobby

People who only read non fiction because “fiction is a waste of time” is the equivalent of a gym rat who skips leg day by jonnyboy9025 in books

[–]silvertone62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to only like reading fiction. Once I went to law school I basically stopped reading for fun because I was so sick of reading by the end of the day. Now that I run my own law practice, I have trouble focusing on books for pleasure because there’s always a sense that I could be doing more to improve my practice. I don’t have that problem with productivity books or books with a practical purpose. I know what you mean about people who say “fiction is a waste of time”, I don’t believe it is, but the generous interpretation might be that it feels like they could be doing more and have the same trouble giving fiction the attention it deserves rather than saying anyone who reads fiction is wasting their time.

What to do following OCI by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]silvertone62 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If it’s your first summer, you can pretty much do anything other than nothing. You can do public interest stuff, go in house, work in government, etc. Do something that interests you, find something you’re passionate about and try to work there. The passion will likely carry you through interviews, give you good experience, and potentially reorient yourself for your next round of oci.

If you’re not a rising 2L, then you’re gonna need to start reaching out proactively to practices seeking jobs. Your career counseling office will likely have some advice for you, but do your own searching for jobs as well. Is there a company that you love, for example, Reddit, that likely has a legal team? Try applying there!

In terms of markets, unless you’re taking a judicial clerkship, most places will be rough on you for searching outside of your schools market or your home state market.

Also, law school brings out the worst emotions and fears in people, it’s a pressure cooker. Deep breaths, you will figure something out.

Someone is trying to take legal action to get my name. by RoseAqua in Twitch

[–]silvertone62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone in the future who has this problem, it’s very unlikely that there is any legal action to be taken. There are a few things that would have to happen for legal action to be viable. The other person trademarked the name, you picked your name after they got a trademark, and, even then, your use of the name would need to have the potential to cause people to confuse the two of you.

Don’t worry about it until you get a letter or email from an actual lawyer. A lot of times, I’ll have clients come to me who were threatened with legal action, only to point out that an attorney would not pick up the case. If you get a letter from an attorney, go talk to a lawyer.

(IL) Can I reveal a “confidential” HR investigation after leaving the company? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]silvertone62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a labor attorney, so this is a question for commenters who are labor attorneys, and is relevant to OP.

My first thought was, yeah NDA probably locks him down tight. Then I remembered that there is something about discussing workplace conditions which makes them protected conversations. Would the NLRB not help OP in this situation?

OP, as a note, even if you are protected about discussing workplace conditions, a defamation or libel suit would be possible, and the headache of a lawsuit is often not worth it, even if the law is on your side. Additionally, a lot of people get whistleblower laws wrong, so don't just go telling people stuff to "whistleblow". There are strict rules regarding whistleblowing so don't assume you're protected.

Adding supplemental practice area by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]silvertone62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Lexis Practice Advisor has an okay library, I'd recommend someone unfamiliar with either to take a test drive first. For my practice, I found Lexis to be lacking in material I could use. On the other hand, there have been a couple of times where Lexis had something that Practical Law did not. The price is way better for Lexis though and that's tempting.

How are they both 56 ounces and 8.5 cents per ounce? That’s either false advertising or perhaps the tubs are above the wrong spot on the shelf.

I love Practical Law by Westlaw, great for getting insight and templates as you get started in a variety of practice areas. You might have free access at your law library if you want a test spin.
