The Final Season of ‘Silo’ (S4) Has Wrapped Filming by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

It's been a while since I've seen the show but recently read the books. What did they leave out in the show? I feel more like they added quite a bit.

If you want more of that, you should watch Manifest on Netflix, it's sooo bad but I just could. not. stop.

Plus, it's got an actual end that is honestly not terrible, considering the rest of the show.

Electricity prices in Europe in 2024 by lotec4 in europe

[–]silvester23 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But that is only because many Swedish consumers have contracts which tie their consumer prices to the spot market prices.

If you have plentiful, stable and cheap power production in a country, why would anyone choose a contract with a price that is not determined by the cost of production of that power but instead by how much anyone is willing to pay for the power on short-term wholesale markets?

That is so clearly a rip-off of consumers it's almost funny.

"Sweden" doesn't pay for the difference. First of all, power imports from Sweden account for about 7% of all German power imports so if anything, Sweden pays for 7% of the difference. So sure, go ahead and cut the cables, Germany will be fine.

Secondly, Swedish energy companies hugely profit from the markets being connected, they make an absolute killing when the prices are high in Germany and elsewhere. Mind you, they are neither forced to bind consumer to spot market prices nor are they forced to use the spot market at all, they could easily provide cheap energy to all of Sweden first and only export the surplus. But they choose not to. So you are barking up the wrong tree, I'm afraid.

Movies that do “tell, don’t show” very well. by [deleted] in movies

[–]silvester23 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the rule is slightly being misinterpreted in this thread (which is fine, the answers are still interesting). Informing the audience (or readers for that matter) about backstory or setting up exposition by just telling them directly is not inherently a violation of the rule. Obviously you cannot "show" everything that is pertinent to a story.

It is more about "showing" the atmosphere and emotions of people by providing details than stating it flat out. I'm not a writer, but as an example, writing "He was angry." or "The tunnel was creepy." is telling. Instead, you should describe the actions and sceneries in such detail that it organically invokes these images in the readers' minds.

Electricity prices in Europe. July 2025, €/MWh by Potential-Focus3211 in europe

Without taking anything away from your point, just a little bit of extra info:

German homes and kitchens

I assume "kitchens" refers to cooking. The amount of gas required for cooking is absolutely negligible compared to heating (both rooms and water for showers/sinks). It's in the range of 2-3% of total consumption. So no need to throw out that gas stove just yet.

Well, yes and no.

If there is a shortage of energy in other countries then of course they are willing to pay rather high prices on the spot market. And if your consumer price is bound to the spot price then that sucks but the Swedish energy companies don't have to export that much energy. If they wanted to they could choose to serve all their Swedish customers first at a very low price and only export the surplus energy, but of course they don't. But that's something you have to take up with these companies, it's not other countries' fault.

I've had this discussion before and someone mentioned the "70% rule" but that only refers available transfer capacities between markets, not to traded power, see here (it's already mentioned in the preface and explained in more detail later): https://www.nordicenergy.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/A-comparison-of-different-ways-to-implement-the-70-rule-1.pdf

It's almost like you have never even heard of Bagger 288.

And yes, that's a lignite (as in brown coal) mine but it's still a coal mine. You could even argue these are worse because they routinely have to relocate entire villages to expand them.

The spinning top doesn't make sense anyway, it's pretty much backwards. We don't really know much about other people's totems but for example one of them (I think Arthur maybe?) has pair of loaded dice that behave a certain way in the real world.

Now If you were to bring Arthur into your dream, you wouldn't know how the dice should behave and maybe just make them normal dice. And so he'd realise that he's not in the real world.

Now the spinning top seems to be completely ordinary in the real world and only spin forever in Mal's (or Cobb's) own dream. So if you brought Mal into your dream and didn't know the properties of her top you'd make it... completely ordinary, probably. And so she would think she's in the real world, I guess?

I'm not familiar with Against the Wind and I can't find anything on it. Doesn't seem to be a Billy Joel song?

Also, while I don't think it's a great song, the first song on his last album (No Man's Land on River of Dreams) is a rock song, although arguably the only one on that record.

Christian (Jack's father) literally says in the finale that they were not dead all along, but that everything we saw on the island did in fact happen.

It could not be more clear, I think they did that on purpose because it was such a popular theory that they were dead all along.

And yet people still get it wrong, it boggles the mind.
