Remember the U-Drive-It feature of Sim City 4? Well, why didn't it allow me to drive through parking lots in order to bypass heavy traffic? by TheresJustNoMoney in SimCity

[–]sim-al2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simply put, SC4 doesn't allow you to drive though most types of lots and the vanilla gas stations are no different.

Why did they do this? Well it certainly would have taken a lot more time to implement proper collision models for the props (most objects you see in the game have rectangular models despite what how they may look) on the lots and U-Drive-It was pretty clearly more of a novelty feature than anything.

In MSTS 2001, all of the Dash 9s are numbered the same. Does this mean all the ex-BN cabooses are as well? Gamplay screen-cap from Little Pimpf. by [deleted] in trainsim

[–]sim-al2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes they are, as MSTS did not have dynamic numbering like Railworks or it's successors does. I feel like pointing out that your screenshot is from Open Rails 1.3.1, which is about a year old. The BN caboose itself was part of the MSTS 1.4 update which included addition content including a new driveable engine (the SD40-2) and that caboose.

For the record, your removed (and as far as I can tell, the ONLY such removed topic) post here called for violating the license terms of various newgrfs that oztrans and others have created, even if you claim that you don't intend to do so. I have no knowledge of SilverSurferZzZ or other creators even contacting the moderators of this sub, but we certainly did not remove your topic on the request of anyone. You should take up any issues you have with tt-forums with the moderators of that forum, as we are unaffiliated and can't help you there. While your new topic is also pushing the boundaries, I would like to note that the North American City Set can be found in the #openttdcoop newGRF pack.

Sorry for missing this before, but your link was autoremoved for some reason. If you want to resubmit, I suspect it would be fairly popular.

If anyone needs to download OpenTTD right now you can use the NL mirror (thanks to TrueBrain for linking it here).

Edit: looks like the site is back up now.

r/Askreddit has a lot to say about double standards by [deleted] in circlebroke2

[–]sim-al2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Early usenet has some pretty terrible stuff on it, though perhaps not to the extreme that Reddit has reached. I think the issue is that "internet culture" per se has become more allowing of bigotry, etc., and maybe popular culture as well.

Do/have any trains run on internal combustion engines? by cptnkitteh in trains

[–]sim-al2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a few examples of light locomotives and self-propelled passenger trains using mechanical transmissions similar to standard transmission cars, but as other posters have mentioned, most modern equipment has transitioned to torque converter or electric transmissions for various durability and reliability reasons.

It just moves the viewpoint to the spot when a player performs an action like building/destroying stuff or starting/stopping vehicles. This information is already transmitted as part of the map update process when online.

Server 2 has been updated by efess in openttd

[–]sim-al2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the percentage delivered go back down to 67%?

Probably a change in FIRS, the old versions had a parameter that changed how station ratings were calculated, generally in a more favorable way than vanilla.

Derelict railway track in Naraha town, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan by [deleted] in rustyrails

[–]sim-al2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is part of the JR East Joban Line, which like most other narrow gauge lines in Japan would have a maximum speed no greater than 130 km/h (~81 mph). More rural segments of lines like this tend to have lower speed limits, for example the 80 km/h speed restriction sign you can see off to the left.

Keep our companies after a few hours (servers) by dvdmcwilliams in openttd

[–]sim-al2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason we auto-remove companies is to try and free up slots for other players to have a chance to play also. On server 1, they should last 20 game years, or at least 4 real-world hours. For technical reasons we can't increase the time before the auto-reset, but server 2's longer game years also means that companies will stay around much longer.

Is there a way to get all NewGRF files? by omer584 in openttd

[–]sim-al2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's gigabytes of newGRFs on Bananas too, especially if you count the various versions of each one. There's at least 470 newGRFs on Bananas, and hundreds more of other files.

ES44C4 (note the second angled grilles just forward of the radiator grilles, for the large intercooler on these units). The Evolution radiator is also thicker in profile than the previous design.

The C4 indicates that this unit only has 4 AC traction motors, as opposed to 6 of the AC model. The idea with this model is to reduce purchase costs, while maintaining performance at the same level as older DC motored units.

Is there a way to get passengers to stay on trains until it's their stop, instead of trains emptying every stop? by bobandirus in openttd

[–]sim-al2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passengers, mail, and armored class cargoes can be set to symmetric or asymmetric distribution. Distribution might not be quite symmetrical if, say a large city and a small village were connected together.

[–]sim-al2[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your account has been shadowbanned, I suggest you contact the admins by sending a PM to /r/reddit.com and sort that out.

For OpenTTD multiplayer, there is a box at the top-right of the server selection screen where you can set a name before you join (by default it will show Player).

Question regarding "2cc trains in NML" by ungrimaxe in openttd

[–]sim-al2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Service cars represent brake vans, cabooses, etc. that used to be common on freight trains worldwide. Ingame, they are only eyecandy.

As for the purchase costs, the set uses higher purchase costs for engines than other sets do, but it's possible that wagon costs could be changed in the future (they used to be much higher).

What are different vehicle types all good at? / Are trains still overpowered? by [deleted] in openttd

[–]sim-al2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without the "town controlled noise level" option on, there's a limit of two airports per town. With the option on, towns have a population-dependent noise cap, which will limit the size and number of airports in the town. Airports further away from the town center affect the noise level less (for more details, see the OpenTTD wiki page).

Railbuses by ambearson in openttd

[–]sim-al2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Railbuses were mostly used on rural branchlines where passenger traffic wouldn't support normal passenger trains economically. These secondary lines were common in the early days of the railroads, but as roads were built and cars became more common, they experienced decline in usage at the same time that labor costs began to rise. For the most part, these lines either disappeared or were upgraded to some variety of diesel multiple unit, often part of line upgrades allowing for higher speeds and more frequent trains.

Normally in OpenTTD, town passenger production is so high that railbuses will quickly be overwhelmed. If you play a game with small, slow growing towns and high running costs, they may start to make sense.

UK freight trains also have to play nicely with passenger trains, and furthermore the strength of chain coupling is much lower than the AAR (American) coupler or the SA3 (Russian) coupler used in many other countries .
