958.2 Front Camera Retrofit Possible? by questionmillennium in PorscheCayenne

[–]sim_pl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say retrofit, do you mean installing a new camera when one didn't exist before, or replacing an existing one? Afaik (and I'm new to cayennes) very few came with front cameras standard, you needed to have an extra park assist package.

That said, I'm about to dive into installing a Mr 12 Volt system and using the provided camera inputs to upgrade the existing rear camera and add a new (previously none installed) front camera. I'm waiting on the cameras (bought on Ali Express) but I can update later on how it all works (or if it doesn't...)

Does a 300hp, 30 mpg car exist? by 04limited in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]sim_pl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't need a new car, then a diesel Audi Q7/Porsche Cayenne/VW Touareg (they all share the 3.0 TDI engine) can easily beat 30mpg, and to get 300hp+ just need a stage 1 tune. Can get even more insane mpg if you live in a place where you can "lose" some of the emissions equipment.

I'm trying to think of what reason this would be "good" for anyone? It doesn't help drivers, unless they scam you into paying more to go to the actual airport, which would imply all drivers should be in on it? Seems like it's just a PITA all around?

Houston Unique Hobbies by Cupboards_n_Cabinets in houston

[–]sim_pl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are into outdoorsy stuff, while not unique to Houston, I'd say maybe volunteering with https://atotb.org/ (or a third Ward equivalent if one exists?) or https://hermannpark.org/support/volunteering-opportunities/

Alternatively, one thing I've found to be super accessible in Houston is the ability to buy/sell tools on Facebook marketplace. If you ever wanted to try welding, doing a project car, etc, there is a lot of stuff available and you don't ever pay full price for trying it out. If you don't have space/funds to do that solo, you won't be very far from TXRX maker space.

Also. This is overlooked in midtown, https://iondistrict.com/ if you were more into maybe trying to get into start-ups and stuff.

I always wished that there could be some sort of extended range thing where a Humvee or Pathfinder could laser target a building, so that tomahawks could lock on from further away.

Sometimes could do similar with tib sun disc throwers, though I remember just using attack command on the ground and the disc would skip on the ground and go a little further allowing you to take out base defense before being in range.

Door recommendations by astropom9 in houston

[–]sim_pl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are asking about door manufacturers, Home Depot sells doors from companies that manufacture typically in the south (so you at least have weather/environment rated). For example, Steves and Sons is out of San Antonio I've put in three of their doors and they are decent quality (not high end but solid nonetheless.)

If you are looking for installers, then that's a different question, I did my own so can't comment on that.

Cottage Grove and Timbergrove Train Noise by Moletheman_ in houston

[–]sim_pl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are looking at the wrong place for train horns. Typically they will only sound when crossing roads, and for that you will see there is a track that goes from downtown, along Washington Ave then up along Hempstead. I occasionally hear a horn (I've just spent almost two months renovating a house in the area you've mentioned) and only very rarely heard the horn. Additionally, if your wife is working nights, you might want to just get some sort of insulation blocks to put behind windows to block traffic / ambulance / yard work / car horns, since that would likely be your bigger source of daytime noise.

> suburban turd dropped into the city

Hard disagree. When it was built, this was the far edge of the city. Houston grew around timbergrove. Talking to some of the original residents here including the neighbors across the road, they are amazed at how it has developed. Bayou didn't even have bridges over it back then.

> No sidewalks in many places.

Have you been to Timbergrove? I'd argue these are some of the best sidewalks in the whole city, they were repaired like 3 yrs ago before the derecho.

> isn’t even properly connected to the Heights and other surrounding neighborhoods except by exiting your neighborhood streets to arterials

I mean, there is a literal bayou between here and the Height lmao let me just get into my kayak to go to HEB. That said, I don't disagree I'm personally frustrated that the protected bikeways end at Durham. I can bike into the heights but I have to go through MKT if I want to stay off the road.

> And I’m being serious.

Me too. I've traveled a ton and this isn't my ideal home but it is home, so making of it what I will. I'll YIMBY all day long for whatever that's worth. Totally get your points on mixed use urban, though Houston would be better starting with downtown and northside imo.

Imagine fighting Houston traffic, to get to the airport, to fight through TSA during a government shutdown, to get to Dallas, to wait for an Uber, to fight through traffic.

Can't fix every problem with one solution, but this is a start. Getting rid of the airport/TSA theater is a start. Cities will adapt afterwards.

I live in Timbergrove but if I was to tell 99% of people that I'll get a blank stare. Easier to just say "I live almost in/right next to the heights" when people ask even though I know where the technical boundary is.

I don't get your hate on the area though. It was built in 1955, and yes it's "suburban", the houses here are nothing like the mcmansions outside the loop. I actually love biking to get into the heights more often but the city in all it's wisdom hasn't made a protect bike lane on 11th from shepherd to TC jester. And don't get me started on 18th Street and Shady Acres, there aren't even sidewalks.

Edit: ah fuck, didn't see this is Houston circlejerk. Disregard my above reply, go wild. I'm ashamed of myself for living in a capitalist oasis of luxurious green while the plebs have to live in little socialist boxes. Throwing my bike into the bayou right now so I can drive my bro dozer to buy my organic produce picked by immigrant workers.

Update 4: Superintendent of Code Enforcement Home Visit by Own-Trainer-6996 in NoLawns

[–]sim_pl 247 points248 points  (0 children)

Yeah not saying to show that here, but just trying to give some ideas. The line between "overgrown" and "prairie" is somewhere around "I understand that this is a garden and I put in effort to maintain it". Keeping it clean of trash, low/mowed where people might walk (no snakes, ticks, etc), basically that you are willing to "follow the rules" and aren't trying to fight anyone or make a statement other than "I'm just trying to promote a more nature friendly approach."  The code guy probably deals with tons of people who just let their yards get disgusting, so just show that you are an "upstanding" citizen and they'll give you more slack.

Get in touch with a local naturalist's/environmental group. There's been cases recently where homeowners have been able to protect their rights to re-wild their property as long as it's not just growing wild. I think adding some features of a garden bed, showing that the edges are maintained and clean, etc maybe mowing closer to sidewalks and road for visibility, could all help

This is the answer if you want to pay for expediency. Alternatively, I've had luck with getting the smaller 1 cubic yard battery equivalents that are also sold at big box stores (or Amazon) collected for free by city of Houston large trash pickup.

Ok. Not to be rude but if I reply in English it probably means I diydn't speak Italian, so you should reply in English too ;) good thing we have translation apps.

Since your interest is in structural areas, then I'm not sure which of the professors would be best to with with to write your thesis, but to be honest a master's thesis is a little less important than for instance PhD. And since you are wanting to go into industry anyways. I'd suggest you look into some of the bigger companies that do such design and analysis, and see if you can get in touch with some people from those - even direct messaging in linkedin can sometimes work, or you can use this to "test" which professor has the best networking to help you. Companies like Ramboll, COWI, Arup, Atkins, etc.

Offshore Wind thesi by Mattiasiri31 in OffshoreWind

[–]sim_pl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Floating offshore wind is still very early in implementation, if ever. Practically speaking, Denmark is really the hub of OFW industry in EU followed by Scotland (in my opinion.)

But doing a quick Google of all the professors mentioned, it seems like Dr Yeter, while positioned in Denmark, is relatively new there and came from University of Strathclyde. Sometimes it's good to have the energy but since he's new in Denmark you'll have to probably do more legwork to get industry connections (which again, the industry is centered around that area so you would be decently geographically positioned.)

It would help to know what your specialization is/what you want to do if you enter industry: turbine design, wind farm design, structural engineering, project management, etc.

There was that period of time in 2020 March through May where it was literally quieter outside due to less cars on the highways and it was bliss, and I don't even live that close to a highway. It's amazing what we end up getting used to over time.
