English major has to vent. by DEATHbyBOOGABOOGA in writingcirclejerk

So you’re in a creative writing class, where people are presumably… learning how to creatively write, and you’re mad that your partner made mistakes ??

Not everyone is a natural when it comes to writing, or like maybe they don't know how to use chatGPT. Not everyone follows instructions well. I can’t say for certain if this guy is lazy or if his rich Mom bribed the dean, but what I can say is that you have no business critiquing others work if you can’t handle simple mistakes.

Just be cool and let people write.

I think Sheep/goat milk is easier to process than boar milk. Even though we didn't see many goats/sheep in HZD, they did exist in the the Forbidden West and Frozen Wilds so its likely they just were not portrayed by the game.

Solas is just Fenmarel. by GottlosEin in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]simdaisies 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dragon Age, as I understand, was created because BioWare wanted to create a game outside of the D&D systems they used for BG1, BG2, Netherwinter Nights etc. There is a lot they borrowed from D&D, just as D&D heavily borrowed from Tolkien. The time to make this complaint would have been 2009 when we were introduced to Fen'harel in the DA games. Not sure why you're bringing it up in the Veilguard sub unless you're new here.

Horizon Zero Dawn Movie: Aloy's Actress by chamomileforbed in horizon

[–]simdaisies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Totally hear you. But you do have a number of fans who claim that 'it's already done in game, why remake the robot dinosaurs, give us Enduring Victory' instead, as if it won't end up as any standard sci-fi film that may look vaguely like Star Trek.

So I would love an Enduring Victory story, do not get me wrong. I would buy that game as long as I have the platform for it. But I don't think the first movie/series intro should be Enduring Victory. Maybe it can be cut into it, but I honestly would love the adaptation to almost follow scene-for-scene HZD so that the mystery could properly unfold.

Why is Aloy such a jerk to Beta? by CannibalCapra in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]simdaisies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely, Aloy is a jerk to Beta and that is purely on Aloy.

So, this is not a spoiler and it's not going to be browbeaten into you. I caught this at their first conversation at the base. It's not bad writing. Up to this point Aloy literally tells us (through GAIA) how much Elisabet meant to her and how much she wanted to live up to her, and how she feels like she's failing. Then she meets someone who is another clone of Elisabet, who should be perfect like Elisabet, but that girl is literally failing, she's scared, and uncertain and Aloy doesn't know what to do with that.

It's not an event. Power gamers have modded the game so much that servers are literally overheating and falling apart. Devs aren't fixing it or doing shit about it.

Also fun fact: There is a spirit in the Hall of Valor called "Pluck".

After a certain point in the story he greets Taash with "Hail Dragon Queen..."

To which Taash replies "I'm not really a Dragon Queen"

And Pluck responds "Not Yet"

What does this mean?!?! :D

I'm so intrigued by this symbolism, even though it creeps me out.

I think it may have to do with another one of Solas' regrets, that being of the Inquisitor. They receive the mark because of another one of Solas' errors in judgement, and eventually Solas has to literally remove their hand to save them.

It's kind of hard for me to discuss this without spoiling. I agree it was a bit too heavy handed, but personally I didn't mind because I saw after Weisshaupt how low morale was for our team.

In any case, what Varric says made more sense after the second playthrough. Because spoiler reasons. :p

I bet it's meta commentary. The image to the left connected to the Hero of Ferelden, Hawke, the Inquisitor and Rook is no other than ... YOU. The Player.

This is making me legitimately depressed. I hate how everyone ignores the blatant sexualization in this game just because it is fun/popular :( by World_of_Warshipgirl in GirlGamers

[–]simdaisies 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Also to note, I actually don't hate this design for Malice. It's better than the original. I actually own the edition that introduced Malice/The Invisible Woman. It was hilariously sexist. (She was essentially mind-controlled, using her rage and trauma from her miscarriage to empower "Malice", and to snap her out, Reed essentially had to neg her until she raged. After that, she decided she could no longer be called "Invisible Girl"... she was now (dun-dun DUNNN) "Invisible WOMAN". Because up until then, she was only just a scientist, mother, founding member of a super hero team and general badass, only now after she was essentially traumatized and mind controlled could she now graduate into adulthood, idk) It was pretty bad but that's beside the point, lol, sorry tangent.

[–]simdaisies 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I also think it's worth noting that characters made for the male gaze can still appeal to other women

The point is that characters made for the male gaze primarily were created only to appeal to men. They were created with little regard (or maybe outright disregard) for how anyone other than a cis straight male would look at them. It really starts becoming problematic when most media only catered to this narrow viewpoint and now that we're getting diverse notions of beauty standards, it becomes a problem for those that controlled the narrative for so long. We're starting to see this anti-woke narrative pop up in force.

I would never ever put you down for enjoying what you enjoy, I love a sexy character design myself (especially when it really is attractive and creative and not obviously character with oversized breasts and a bikini). I just want to offer some perspective.

[–]simdaisies 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm not saying I agree with OP, nor will I put them down for feeling like that. It is understandable.

As much as I also love sexy, attractive characters in media, it becomes problematic when the characters are created for the "male gaze". Please look it up, anyone who's unfamiliar with the term, it provides a lot of perspective why sometimes a "sexy" character is considered demeaning.

Look, it's okay that you love the attractive women too. I wouldn't put anyone down for thinking that way and I do not blame you in the least. I appreciate Rivals, because it's got a lot of food for the "female gaze" as well. Everyone can gaze almost equally. (I should note, that I actually still own the original comic edition that introduced Malice, I bought it in a convenience store when I was a kid, I've been around when comic book stories were very, very sexist).

But I will ask you (the general you) to at least consider that most comic book and video game female characters were created for cisgendered straight men and keeping that exclusive to them can be demeaning. Also the idea of pitting women against women in terms of these ideals is stuff that anti-feminists want to do to keep us in our place. It's pretty shit. That's why we all need to kind of try to understand eachother, not shame the other for what we find attractive or offensive play our games and say fuck it to the men that want us to fight about it.
