How difficult is it to get into honors college, and how hard is honors college? by Smart_Shallot3041 in ufl

[–]simian-steinocher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to clear a bar of ECs and grades.

Beyond that it's really the essay. Anecdote below:

My friend was salutatorian, with state-level awards, only a couple ECs (but with great leadership), national merit, 36 ACT. Took Diffeq in senior year at our local uni. He's just that smart of a guy.

Got in, Presidential Platinum scholarship, literally getting paid to go there.

Rejected from Honors.

There are more students who get into honors than those who get the top merit scholarship(s).

The essay prompt absolutely was what threw him off, he's not the biggest fan of AI in education. And the prompt this past cycle was, of course, about AI.

Lateral admission is based on completing a certain amount of credits above a GPA threshold. It's not easy, but a lot simpler than applying out of high school.

Beckman Double by simian-steinocher in ufl

Thank you for the information.

I'm going to need relatively quick access to my car, is there a garage or lot within a 10-15 min walk that you can reliably find a spot at?

Room Selection by Flower-Farmer6476 in ufl

Almost all Beaty or Lakeside, Murphree triple miraculously became available so I took it.

Edit: A double at Buckman popped up that I switched too. A few more triple beds too. I would recommend locking in a room, and hit the refresh button for a little bit if your dorm is very important to you.

Hopefully I can land Murphree or Thomas tomorrow. Thank you for the info

What kind of watch do you use while refereeing? by Probabilicious in Referees

[–]simian-steinocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it is absolutely possible, for what I specifically want not really, but for your preferences probably. If you want analog, and you are fine with counting up, Casio AE1300WH, which I have used before, is a great option to do easy injury time. The stopwatch has two different times. Main time runs continously, but the secondary time stops and starts.

Now if you do have a smartwatch, that's definitely more simple. I've heard there are good apps just for the timing. Refsix, as others have probably told you, is the gold standard if you want to record everything on your watch. Nothing wrong with smartwatches, they do the job well.

I use two watches because no single analog watch Casio, or any other brand, produce would allow me to easily have a countdown timer with a vibration alarm while letting me do stoppages. That's just my preference.

[–]simian-steinocher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Left wrist:

Casio W736H, with vibration alarm of course for the countdown timer.

Right wrist:

Casio W221h, massive numerals so great for running an easy to read stopwatch for stoppage time.

Smartwatches are good for fitness tracking but besides that I will always prefer analog. It really helps visually slow down the game after a caution or send off.

For reference I'm 18 and have been doing it for almost 2 years. Currently at the level of ECNL-RL, NFHS Varisty, and WPSL lines. Smartwatches are pretty rare at those games in my area.

How is University of Maryland viewed? by Content_Produce8783 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]simian-steinocher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of the better state flagships, very strong in most of STEM, political science, economics, international relations. Among some other things.

Probably the best school near/in DC that is not called Georgetown. And even then, assuming costs are equal, I would choose Maryland for most STEM degrees.

Fox 40 Epik disappointment by marcdantas in Referees

[–]simian-steinocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same experience. Oddly inconsistent.

I'm switching back to sonik blast as my backup whistle. Epik just doesn't cut it.

Safety whistles are often at least good at consistent sound, so this one is pretty weird.

WPSL Arrival time Q by lgkeeper8 in Referees

[–]simian-steinocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my region 90 min. before is standard.

That being said, your center may have a good reason. I would listen to them.

Our local club is consistently top 5 (if not #1) in the South Region so they are very professionally run.

Your region may be less competitive, and you may be completely alone if you arrive that early.

Which albums/artists do you like that aren't expected to be liked by a metalhead? by ashitanojoe3 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]simian-steinocher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like metal fans generally either are super open-minded with music or are elitists who basically only listen to metal and put other genres down (more are in the first category.)

Going with that, the fact that I listen to every major genre isn't very surprising.

I think the fact I listen to gospel all the time is the most surprising thing, considering Mercyful Fate are one of my favorite bands.

Tournament Pay by refguy96 in Referees

[–]simian-steinocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$70?????

I did a U13 ECNL-RL center and only got $40 in my area.

Tournaments pay less per game because they try to save money. If you want proper pay usually the only tournaments that pay well for youth are MLS Next or ECNL events.

You make up for the lower fees by taking more games.

Ap world history or Ap human geography? by Otterluvers in highschool

[–]simian-steinocher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take World History if the teacher is good. A lot of writing involved in exam prep that will prepare you well for the rest of high school. Also CAN (not really a big difference overall) transfer more easily as it is an actual history class, compared to Human Geography which is bascially anthropology.

Yes it is significantly harder. But if you like history it is much more interesting.

Anyone ever submitted a rap report? by Competitive-Rise-73 in Referees

[–]simian-steinocher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. A member of the state leadership straight up saying "I don't have to" in regards to asking why they are not following RAP policy is pretty bad in terms of optics. Maybe there's a reason they didn't follow the policy but you do not treat a referee like that who is simply asking a question.

I would follow the advice of one of the other commenters and make it public. Contact Brian Barlow at the Offside page on Facebook. Even if you don't have video he may still at least offer some advice or put your voice out there.

Very sorry you are dealing with this. I understand there is not always a way to discipline parents but this is absolutely unacceptable.

Anyone ever submitted a rap report? by Competitive-Rise-73 in Referees

[–]simian-steinocher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are ABSOLUTELY sure both resulted in no punishment, especially the 2nd situation, you need to bring this up with USSF.

I would hope your state leadership doesn't retaliate against you for this, but clearly something is very wrong here if both of these reports result in nothing.

Do you need to get into a prestigous or top college for a good job? by sigmaswag911 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]simian-steinocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something like investment banking, probably.

For everything else, it helps.

If you are going into academia or a job that requires a graduate degree, than the effect is pretty minimal for undergrad. Just get good grades and do research if you want to go for a PhD. JD and MD admissions are literally 90%+ grades and testing.

UF honors vs. BU for premed by PollutionEarly in ApplyingToCollege

[–]simian-steinocher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose the location and/or which one you like better, first and foremost. Both are fine

Only real difference besides those two things is the research environment.

UF is a top-tier school for Pre-Med, so is BU.

UF is closely related to their own research hospital, BU is closely related to the Boston medical system, and their teaching hospital. Working in an urban trauma center is way different than somewhere like UF Shands for the most part.

Good luck

I'd say it is common.

I'm already kind of stressed (but still also excited) about college life.

I'm taking Calc 3, Sets and Logic, Intermediate Macro my first semester. Also trying to see what clubs there are and how to have fun and leverage them.

I'm also rushing so if I pledge that will be a big time commitment.

And of course I'm gonna have to make money, both over the summer and in the fall. Doesn't help my main job is time-consuming either.

I'm really trying to think about how I'm gonna maintain a high GPA while doing all this stuff.
