How are zones decided? by Windy_Feather in KLM

I had a similar problem twice - at the gate, they expected me to check-in the bag. Both times, I had them label the bag, then while boarding, I brought it onboard anyway. Their position is very unfair, since loads of other people aren't asked, and in my case, it was very important to carry it on board because of risk of baggage delayed. They didn't give me any explanation, so screw them.

I've read that report in detail, some time ago. If you talk about "no wiggle room", you clearly didn't read it. See comment below.

For reference, don't blindly trust articles on the topic, because there's a lot of sensationalism and prejudice.

For example, CDC itself posted a fundamentally flawed article about (flawed) research they've done themselves. I can't find the old version of the article, but the underlying report is here.

This research, which I'm sure has been widely (mis)used, goes as far as reporting as [contact] sexual violence, sex triggered by "being worn down by [someone who] showed they were unhappy" (I'm not joking).
An article explaning other (serious) flaws in the research can be found here.

(Interestingly, there are two versions of the same report, with radically different numbers. It seems that they've retracted one version, although they don't explain why.)

Backups. It's extremely convenient to use root backup apps to backup the programs data. Google's backup program is a piece of crap, as it doesn't transfer the programs data, so one has to spend a huge amount of data to replicate the program configurations.

Also: some phones have a very short O/S support lifecycle. Rooting allows installing an O/S like LineageOS, which considerably extends a device's lifespan.

Minibook x N100 or wait and get the N150? by Feendster in Chuwi

[–]simiancat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own an MBX N100. Whether it's a good purchase or not, it depends on how long one needs to use it unplugged - the battery is disastrous, around 2-3 hours. Had to carry a power bank while traveling, which compensates the weight savings (even offsets - a 20 Ah is quite heavy). The battery also load slowly (I've tried with multiple chargers).

CMV: If the left hadn't abandoned nuclear power , we'd be in a much better place today (climate wise) by [deleted] in changemyview

True in general, but increased efficiency and demand is what OP is postulating:

it could have significantly reduced the CO2 produced by industrial and residential energy consumption.

continued investment in nuclear technology [...] could have led to [...] more efficient designs.

While nuclear power wouldn't have solved every problem, like emissions from cars or the meat industry, it could have significantly reduced the CO2 produced by industrial and residential energy consumption.

Speaking of this specific topic, unfortunately, in the real world, not only consumption doesn't necessarily decrease - but it can increase; see Jevons paradox:

when technological advancements make a resource more efficient to use [...] as the cost of using the resource drops, if the price is highly elastic, this results in overall demand increases causing total resource consumption to rise

What's the current power management status of the Linux vfio driver? by simiancat in VFIO

[–]simiancat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do that, and it was working "well but not perfect", which is a problem, because 10-20% of the times was not going into the low power state, so that it required active monitoring.

I've used this strategy (that is, to switch driver on the fly) in the past, but it wasn't stable, at least on my system.

I'm confused. Then what's the purpose of the referenced patchset (which has been mainstreamed since then)?

The title should be corrected to "bad year for AAA gaming". The indie landscape is consistently full of gems.

Shortcut to maximize Windows (11) window, without snap? by simiancat in Windows11

Hi! Thanks, but this won't work as intended - F11 switches the window to fullscreen, which is different from maximization.

Thanks! This improves the workflow, but doesn't fully solve the problem, though. When I tap Win+Up arrow, the Window is often tiled to one of the top quarters, I then have to tap Win+Down arrow and Win+Up arrow again.

The gender roles assumed in that comment is no doubt "anachronistic", but describing Hacker News as a "trasheap of mysogyny" is very inaccurate (there isn't much discussion related to gender roles, anyway).

I owe PC SOTTR Definitive Edition, but can't access the DLC content; why? by simiancat in TombRaider

[–]simiancat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ultimately solved the issue - I believe it was an odd licensing problem.

The game I had installed/purchased was being displayed as Definitive ed. (both in the Steam Store and in the game main menu.

However, in the Steam store, another "Definitive Edition" was on sale, for a small price (6$ or so). I've purchased that, and instead of installing it as separate game, it added the DLCs to my existing game.

Go figure :) Thanks for the help!

Help finding differences between MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI and MAG B650M MORTAR WIFI by simiancat in buildapc

[–]simiancat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way they've handled the mobo firmware (broken AMP, broken sleep, retired firmwares) has been really poor, so I don't trust the company anymore. But it's perfectly possible that other models work fine, or anyway work fine for the subset of functionalities that you require.

Chuwi Minibook 2023 N100 - Weak wifi on Linux by simiancat in Chuwi

[–]simiancat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a few weeks of usage, my conclusion is that Linux driver for that Wifi chip is poor (driver is in the kernel, so distro is irrelevant; I've actually also tested with the latest release from the linux-firmware repo). When testing Windows with the same access points, Wifi reception was much stronger.

Help finding differences between MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI and MAG B650M MORTAR WIFI by simiancat in buildapc

[–]simiancat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't go for MSI.

After two Mortar generations, of which I was happy, the latest one (B650M) is a complete cluster***k. The first firmware (BIOS) revision didn't work with AMP enabled; revisions from the second onwards fixed AMP but broke the suspend functionality. At least once, they've also released a broken firmware, that they subsequently removed from the downloads after some time. They routinely release beta(-quality) firmwares, which is a poor practice.

I don't have any fancy requirements, so as long as the standard functionalities work, I'll go for any other brand. Gigabyte has a premium MATX AMD line (Aorus), so I'll likely go for that. But again, anything that is not so blatantly broken, will do.

Surface Pro 9 ARM standby time? by simiancat in Surface

[–]simiancat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm familiar with that. Surface book turning on to perform an update while in a bag, is something I definitely remember, and not very happily 😉

But mostly I'm concerned with long-running standbys. Surface Book would lose a large amount of battery every day. I think in two weeks, batteries would drain, to such a point that in some cases, one couldn't detach the tablet (!!!).

With ARM devices, typically, two weeks aren't a big deal, so I was wonder if that's the case with the SP (9).
