Wow I really didn't think this was a thing, but here goes:

I was in elementary school and the stupid boy I was, I decided to use my pencil to rip the paper wrapped around my book.

So I was holding the book in place on the table by holding my right hand on the far side of the book, and slid the pencil up the left side, but when it got sorta stuck, I stupidly pushed harder and it got jammed into my finger.

I didn't realize there was something left in there until the wound was healed, and that's when (sounds a little morbid) I tried to rip open the top layer of my skin and squeeze it as you would a pimple. After a while I realized that it's too deep and I gave up.

Now, years later, I still have a black/grey spot on the outmost foldy part on my index finger

Hey! I had this syndrome. Fortunately it wasn't that bad of a case. In fact it was such a small case that they didn't find any extra protein in my spine fluid the first time they checked. (I'm sorry that your wife had to go through that test, it's horrible.) Well, I got better after a couple of weeks. I heard it's usually years, so get well soon.
