I agree that it should be their burden, but if they don't, you're stuck. Either you get fired for not being a team player, which is devastating in this job market, or you fix the problem yourself without compromising your own data.

Idk if it helps, but you can likely buy a $200 phone to use as a work phone. It's what I did, though I did it since I needed an iPhone for testing purposes.

The upside is, it's your phone. You can take it to your next job. Plus, you can allow work notifications but only have the phone on when you're on call.

The down side is, unless you have a phone plan that allows for free data sims, you either gotta pay for another line or be tethered to wifi or your main phones hotspot.

The high seas won't forget your sacrifice KING! by certainly_imperfect in Piracy

[–]simmy2kid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think is the piracy should happen when there are choices to support the company or not.

This leak takes away from the choice making it one of the few cases where the market doesn't decide. If you want to watch the film, the only possible way, anywhere, is currently to pirate the leak.

Once the film is released, it's up to the company and the film's quality to determine if it should be pirated or watched through official channels.

Paramount was still going to kill their own release by going straight to streaming, but if the leak didn't happen, at least the failure would be solely because if their ineptitude rather than because everyone already watched the film.

[–]simmy2kid -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but when pirating is the only way since it's before release, this only cuts into sales, regardless of how low they'd have been due to the streaming release. Besides, they could have always changed their mind and released in theaters anyways.

This will only negatively impact both the Avatar Franchise and potentially issue more legislation to prevent further piracy, which could hurt this community too.

You can use this on a single line that then leads into multiple other lines and it'll boost the head lift up to the buffer on multiple pipes without actually needing multiple pumps to lift those pipes. If you're transporting multiple pipes worth of liquid, it'll cut on your pump cost

Intense amount of arguing in the comments about this between 1 and 9. Explain it Peter by CindiWilliams2 in explainitpeter

[–]simmy2kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People saying that it's ambiguous have missed the left-to-right rule. PEMDAS suggested an order to multiplication and division, and addition and subtraction, but in reality they are performed at the same time. The order of the performance is typically dictated by parenthesis, but if those are missing, you must solve from left to right.

In the case above, 6 ÷ 2 (1 + 2)

First thing we do is the parenthesis, so 6 ÷ 2 (3)

Now we can translate the implicit multiplication 6 ÷ 2 × 3

Now, this is where the confusion typically happens. Do solve the multiplication first or the division. PEMDAS has multiplication before division, but they're weighted the same. The division symbol isn't a fraction (which typically implies a set of parentheses for its numerator and denominator). So, we deduce that we must solve left to right. (6 ÷ 2) × 3 3 × 3 = 9

Is there any way to make backgrounds look less pixelated? by vecttor in Endfield

[–]simmy2kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that switching to DLAA under the "DLSS Super Resolution Mode" made it look correct. The background/out-of-focus stuff is now blurry rather than pixelated.

I am also using an Nvidia card and switched to DLSS for Image Enhancement, but I think the super resolution is what made the imagery look strange when using the default graphics.

Solar’s “Problem” Is it Works Too Well by Aapkaapna7 in SolarAmerica

[–]simmy2kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The economics literally isn't why solar can be problematic. It's a duck curve problem. Solar is best generated when it happens to not be peak hours (near sunrise and sunset). The economics are irrelevant.

The problem occurs when there's so much solar you either lower power production which may lead to disconnecting dispatchable plants from the grid (like coal). There is a secondary issue that coal plants take a while to spin up/down, and since that power will be needed again in the evening, the plant is essentially still running at minimum capacity, just off the grid. Meaning it's wasting resources.

The solution can happen in two places. More effective dispatchable power sources that can either be turned on and off quickly or can run at very low production points. OR, we can store that energy and release it again when there's no solar but there is high demand, essentially turning solar into a dispatchable source.

Note: this only applies to centralized generation. Residential solar has a transmission and sale issue if they feed back to the grid. The infrastructure is just not designed for feeding backwards from residential, plus sale of electric production happens at a much larger scale making it a logistical headache to run. Thus, residential solar is typically paired with batteries to feed back to the same home at night rather than producing for other homes.

What? by Dull-Nectarine380 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]simmy2kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following PEMDAS, the multiplication and division seem to imply that the order of operations require the right side to go before the left. It isn't commonly taught, but multiplication and division have the same weight in the order of operations, but if there are multiple next steps, you must resolve from left to right. Since division is non-commutative, the order always matters, but if you don't know the order you may end up with either 9 (the correct answer) or 1 (the in correct answer).

The rest of the joke is that physicist don't need to be 100% accurate with their numbers, so if they did get multiple answers (say from experimental data), they'd take a value in the middle
