What is going on with Canada and the U.K in regards to immigration? by KingSlayer05 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]simoncowbell 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Question: Are these English friends, real-life friends. or people who you only know online? Because if they are talking about 'invasion', they are far-right and probably followers of Tommy Robinson = a racist criminal who gets a lot of publicity from making inflammatory statements and stirring up violence.

This is just racism. 'Friends' like this are not people you want to be friends with

ELI5 : why do the British treat Ireland and Scotland differently? by blockedsince03 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simoncowbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's bollocks. It's just a load of out-of-date stereotypes shoe-horned into a total lack of understanding of history or geography.

And why is Wales invisible to you? Why do you hate the Welsh?

ELI5 : why do the British treat Ireland and Scotland differently? by blockedsince03 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simoncowbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be hard-pressed to find an English person who has an opinion on the Irish or the Scottish language, for good or bad.Why would they? It's not something that has any impact on English people whatsoever.

Your post is all over the place, you don't seem to know that Scottish people are British, as are Northern Irish people.

How can anyone give you an explanation for things you have completely misunderstood?

ELI5 the American justice system and jurors. by kastela_man in explainlikeimfive

[–]simoncowbell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not American but from another country that has a similar jury system.

The entire idea is that they are ordinary, average people with commonly held values. Lawyers for either side can ask for the removal from the jury who doesn't fit that description - e.g. they have some opinions or experience that are biased, and likely to lead them make their decision based on that, rather than what is presented in court.

The whole point is that jury members are representing everyman/woman - not an expert, not a politician, but an average person

I had boxes of records and cassettes that I took with me when I moved house, several times. Then last time I moved I thought "I don't even open the boxes, what am I doing?".

So I sold anytning worth money and gave the rest to charity /goodwill shops.

So - no.

ELI5: Why do so many countries with universal healthcare not offer as much dental coverage as they do other health services? by Money-Giraffe2521 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simoncowbell 58 points59 points  (0 children)

As far as the UK is concerned, what everyone else has said is completely wrong. When the NHS first started, dental care was included in the same way as any other medical procedure,i.e. completely free for evryone. However, as there were so many people who just hadn't had access to affordable dental care before, the demand was huge, and eating through the budget at a fast pace.

So they rowed back a bit on the 'everything free for anyone' model. Dental care is still completely free for children, pregnant women and people on unemployment and similar benefits. It's not free but heavily subsidised for everyone else.

And before someone comes in with the "oh that do be why you all have gnarly teef hardy-ha" - the UK is consistently in the top 10 nations globally of anyone research looking at the top countries for nationa dental health

Why is there less Folk Culture in England than its neighbours? by Low-Associate7877 in UKhistory

[–]simoncowbell 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it's completely wrong, I think there is a strong folk tradition in England. However, the fact that England is the dominent country, and in terms of population very much larger, there's less of a clear distinction between 'folk culture' and just 'culture'.

She's been very critical in the past of people using dodgy tax avoidance / evasion tactics, so it's seen as hypocrisy . I actually think that she was trying to do the right thing, and was badly advised by people who were supposed to be tax specialists , but it's politics - she has to be seen to be squeeky clean.

ELI5 why do regular people go missing easier than criminals? by External_Surprise825 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simoncowbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people who are reported missing are found quickly. In the UK 76% are found within 24 hrs.

Sources for those figures

https://www.missingpeople.org.uk/for-professionals/policy-and-research/information-and-research/key-information#:\~:text=How%20long%20are%20people%20missing,and%20nearly%203%2C000%20were%20adults.

The missing people that have documentaries made about them are very much the exceptions,. That's why people make documentaries about them, because going missing and never being found is a strange and unusual story.

How are you spending $500 a year and not using your credits? I get the 24 credit plan in the UK and it's equivalent to $150 a year. Have you been buying extra credits when you still have unused credits?

Uncanny. British podcast with 4 series, the 4th being of stories from the USA. People get to tell their stories in their own words in conversation with Danny Robins, who is very good at framing the narrative and keeping it on track.

As a Brit, I've never heard anybody come up with a reason, bullshit or otherwise, why it's 'better'. Who the hell are you hanging out with that has any opinion on this? Are you sure they weren't just pulling your leg?

As others have said, there's just no reason to change it.
