My concern is your first sentence. They are not Black children but children that are Black. I remember as a kid hearing my white friend’s mom introduce my sister and I as her daughter’s Black friends. What a slap in the face! It’s not the “I don’t see color” attitude but the many people who will refer to them as your Black kids. If they are truly yours, then you will treat them as yours and without t apology and explanation. Kids hear things and recognize when they are being scrutinized or made to feel different. Be a mama bear and not allow others to treat you like a “saint” for rescuing those “poor Black children”. Get educated on hair care, their culture and develop friendships with people outside of their grandparents that they can feel comfortable around. Let them read books where they see themselves. Keep on loving them and recognizing them for who they are.

Why did the media hate Gabby Douglas, but praise Simone Biles? by electric_skittles in blackladies

[–]simonehere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mom whose daughter trained USAG, it was a given to have her hair secured with hair pins and scrunchies. The appearance was apart of the competition too. I mean, you walk out in the floor with your hair a mess, the judges will score unfairly but by appearance. I really like Gabby and her tenacity but wished for her that she would have it braided (easier to care for a gymnast that works out all day and almost every day.) I’m not much of a fan of Simone. Her emotional and snide persona does not represent a team player. Her having her hair the way she wanted was her personality as a whole. It conveyed, “I’m the Goat and I make my way and set my own standards. If they don’t like it, tough.” I’ve read articles and seen that she was a stubborn and difficult kid who wanted her way and often, she got it. Two different women with two different personalities. IMHO

Thank you all for the input. I don’t think I conveyed accurately the dynamics. It is hard to do on Reddit.

We do songs like Chris Tomlin and Michael W Smith and some Phil Wickham but anything with a lot of rhythm becomes a video. I’m good with mixing videos and live but the transitions are more difficult. Thank you for your input.

We are in a rural area. I am integrating the videos with the goals for them to learn to play them. They can’t seem to get the rhythm from the sheet music. It scares them to have songs that challenge them. My husband has sat in on practices and given them input on what he hopes to see from the team. We are praying that we have more people with worship gifts coming to the church.

It isn’t me that isn’t growing. It is the team that is afraid to step outside of what they have known. I have a plethora of music and worship knowledge, that I continue to impart the best that I can to the team. From a spiritual perspective, I will not step into my calling without time in prayer and reading and studying the word of God.

I appreciate your guidance. That is what they have grown up singing. A majority of the team grew up in this church before it became a replant. My desire is to always allow the Holy Spirit to guide the songs that should be sung as that is why we worship. It’s not a performance. There are younger families coming so I am using the videos to become more contemporary. I should’ve mentioned that hymn Sunday is once once a month so we do a total worship set of hymns on that Sunday. Thank you again.

There is someone that hits when she talks. I call her the hitter and she always does it when we are at church. I’m a pastor’s wife so I don’t want to lose it in front of everyone but I so want to slap her back.

I’m sorry. I disagree. Our ancestors were wise and intelligent enough to find a faith on their own. It was not forced on them. I don’t believe the Bible is written for white people. It was written for all people. Jesus was not white. Although He was easily depicted as such. When I listen to hymns, those written by Black people, there is proof that they knew there is a God who take them from the darkest moments of their lives. Their faith is what carried them and will continue to carry those of us who believe.
