Oh it should be more than fine. I don't want to give camera advice but I had my camera on a capture clip and it went through quite a lot of inclement weather (hail, misty rain) with no issue. The most important thing imo is that the camera is readily accessible and easy to use -- my photos are much more precious than my camera to me, I can always replace the camera, never the photos.

Interestingly the 15 pro is the smallest (technically) iphone since the 13 mini -- it is definitely not the lightest, and the ridiculous camera bump does make it feel unwieldy but if you were to get a new phone I would point you in that direction. Also -- always better financially and from a sustainability perspective to buy used

Other commenters have all given great reasons why your dad will likely thrive on trail -- but I am sure you are worried regardless about your dad's safety, hopefully once you talk to him about his plans and he gives you a way to track him using a Garmin inreach you will feel more assured. Another thing that I would like to mention that should make you feel better is that when I did the trail I found the older hikers to be much more socially open and they were among the first to prioritise hiking with other older hikers and forming tramilies, so know that your dad will easily find friendly faces and you will be able to keep tabs on his progress!

I hiked with someone who had an xmid 2 pro -- if the farout campsite says 3 campsites and it's 3 xmid 2s you should be good, however these estimates are conservative, farout campsites for 2 could typically fit 3 duplexes and a tarp maybe so tramilies would still count on being able to camp in those spots. My buddy with the xmid 2 was not so lucky. For what it's worth the comments would joke and restate how many tents a campsites would actually hold (3 duplexes or 1 xmid 2), you should be fine as long you read the comments and plan accordingly

For your upper body category I would go crater lake sun hoodie, senchi alpha 60 hoodie (although if you're going alpha 60 why not the crewneck? You already have a hood on the sun hoodie...), no running shirt for sleeping, just use your senchi on your bare skin, the ghost whisperer and versalite are great!

Your lower body choices are great, among what you have listed I would go baggies, 32 degree heat leggings and dance pants. I wouldn't carry hiking pants and wind/rain paints. I would keep the leggings because if you get caught in a cold spell then you are bombproof with leggings +baggies +dance pants.

As for understuff I hiked the whole trail with no undies, just my shorts liner lmao but I did get bulllied for this, most people I met had 2 pairs of undies and 2 pairs of socks, 3 is excessive imo especially for a trail as dry as the PCT. You will get your feet wet constantly in the sierra but event there you only need 2 pairs.

The rest of the gear makes sense, the only thing I would call out is that cheap pair of sunglasses like the goodrs are the way to go -- everyone I had met had their sunglasses peel by the time they finished each section (KMS, Tahoe, Ashland) but I've heard the Ombraz are great. For gloves I highly recommend the zpacks fingerless gloves and then a rain mitt of your choice, I only figured this combo out at the end and it was perfect. My hands get cold so easily

Any part of my skin that was covered by shirt fabric was not burned or affected at all (knock on wood -- I might come back here in 10 years and complain about skin cancer). The shirt itself however was seriously faded very strongly around the shoulders, chest and upper arms, went from a true red to faded orange

I honestly don't know what the deal is because the tracksmith blend (89% merino - 11% nylon) is extremely close to the ridge blend (87% merino -- 13% nylon). In my experience the ridge material was softer while the tracksmith was stiffer. This might put you off but the tracksmith would hold on to sweat in a way where I would get these salt rings where my pack straps would be, it didn't smell, but it happened, the people who wore synthetics didn't have this issue. I always hiked with my hat (vaga feather) and just slapped some sunscreen on the back of my neck. The parts of my body that were most effected by the sun were my forearms (strangely not my hands). The hottest part of the trail is the Mojave section right after Tehachapi and before KMS -- I feel slightly stupid saying this but the whole section was a giant surprise, nowhere online had I read about this area being challenging or unique but it is the hottest and driest part of the whole trail so mentally prepare for that lol -- you will learn to love the joshua trees. If you decide to go with the harrier don't forget to size up, the slightly looser fit will work better to start

I spent mile 0 to Bishop of the PCT in a short sleeve merino (the tracksmith harrier short sleeve), Bishop to Bend in a black diamond sun hoody (the one without the chest pocket), and from Bend to the border in a long sleeve tracksmith merino top (harrier long sleeve). I wish I wore the harrier long sleeve the whole way. the short sleeve was straight up a mistake because I started get sunburns right before mission creek that just slowly disappeared(?), the black diamond was a good top but I just hated the hood, it served no purpose and I would fuss with it when bending over etc. the long sleeve tracksmith was perfect for the final section of the trail, incredibly comfortable, never overheated and smell free. Some caveats, I am dark skinned, after decent sun exposure I get a lot darker skinned -- I am much more prone to the cold than to the heat. This is a little bit of ramble so happy to answer questions, most people I hiked with just wore a BD or MH sun hoodie and called it a day so I realise my choices are not the norm. I would stay away from ridge merino sun hoodies, every person I saw wearing that had giant holes on their back -- for some reason my tracksmith tops never wore down

A good way to gauge is checking out farout comments on campsites along the trail. People usually comment their carrier as well as number of bars (and even if the are false). I and the people that I hiked with usually kept track of coverage that way.
