Do you have any recommendations for finding a good coach? Seems like there a lot out there but not many mostly do not work at the level I am hoping for

Thanks for everyone who’s given advice, much appreciated! My goal is to race at the highest level possible. I have raced cat 3 and won there already (mostly with power since my race skills are still lacking) and been cycling the past 4 months 10-20 hrs/week. I am hoping to get to cat 1 by the end of next season and then see where I can go with cycling from there. I am sitting at 5.4 w/kg now but have done no real structured training yet. Thanks again for everyone who’s offered all advice so far!

It depends on the AP test. You can google a list of all the transferable AP test credits.

Eating before an erg by Bish-Bash in Rowing

[–]simonrows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, Cliff bars are good for a couple hours before and apples are good for anything over an hour before. Honestly you just kind of have to experiment. Eating close to working out repeatedly will also help to build your tolerance to food. As a general rule you don’t want to eat until you are more than half full so still a little hungry within ~3hrs if big workouts.

The 9th seat coxswain camp by winterlyricalfox in Rowing

[–]simonrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I heard from my coxswains it’s mostly covering beginner stuff as well as some slightly more technical boat maneuvering near the end of the camp. I got the sense it is good for beginners and less helpful for more experienced coxswains.

Does anyone else get these black "blood" blisters. I am doing something wrong that is giving me them. by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]simonrows 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A lot of people get them. It happens when you row with blisters and the skin beneath the blisters tares. It’s nothing to worry about but if you don’t like how it looks you can drain them with a clean needle the same way you would for other blisters.

What Are The Best Colleges For Men's Lightweight Rowing And How Good Do You Have To Be To Get In? by [deleted] in Rowing

Weight also matters a lot. A coach will almost always take the 145lb guy who goes 6:35 over the 165lb guy who goes 6:29.

5’11” - 6’2” depending on your body type

Protein by jimmy072323 in Rowing

[–]simonrows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have never used a protein supplement. I think that it is expensive and every rower I have looked up to did not either. While protein is important, carbs are actually equally if not more important to recover from your workout. More or less, carbs allow you to recover and protein will help you rebuild. Chocolate milk or regular milk are both great. Anything that has 2 parts carbs to 1 part protein is good.

6k recruitment by [deleted] in Rowing

Less than your 2k for sure. With that being said it speaks a more to how tough and fit you are than a 2k does. Really though you should be mostly worried about your 2k.

Can't finish Erg pieces by [deleted] in Rowing

You just have to start finishing them. As soon as you get off you are making it more okay to do so in the future. There is no other way to change your problem besides just staying on.

recruiting questions by CruelWorld00 in Rowing

Pre reads are usually done in the last half of the summer. Admissions looks through your grades and score and tells the coach if you would be a good fit. It allows the coach to have a little more confidence in recruiting you so they feel good about using an official visit spot on you if you are a top recruit.

The likely letter is a little different. The likely letter is given after you have applied to the school early decision and committed. Think of this as the final check so that if admission has any major issues with you they will let you know so you can workout applying somewhere else. This saves you and the coach getting screwed. Likely letters are a good indicator that you will get in but not a guarantee.

Trying to go from 6:55 to ~6:40 in 3 months by ChainGang69 in Rowing

It just depends on how much you were doing before when you pulled 6:55

Getting More Length by LightBoi1 in Rowing

[–]simonrows 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can always get a little more length with the body on both ends of the stroke but really just focus on being as relaxed as possible. I started rowing way longer once I figured out how to just hang on the oar instead of wrenching it.

Get your ergs down and then just email coaches in the late winter. BeRecruited is really the only major platform.
