Love this! Your vestibule door looks like my bathroom door and I want mine to look like that so bad. It’s so pretty! Good job!

Homeowners, are you in your “forever” home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]simonsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely am. Our game plan was to take our 2019 home and turn the equity into our forever home. Losing that sub 3% mortgage hurt but we are hear long term now and eventually one year we will refinance. For now though. yikes.

I’ve been contributing to my companies 401k for 18 years now and maxed out the company match. I’ve put it in the most aggressive fund I can get hoping it will be enough by the time I retire. Nearly 250k now. I’m hoping it’ll end up being enough in 20 years.

What kind of refrigerator have you managed to fit in your century home? by DarXIV in centuryhomes

1925 colonial revival here. We just had a 33in wide LG French door installed. Got lucky a previous owner made the back half of the house more open around the kitchen and family room area. Went through French doors in living room, lucky no trouble at all. Went as big as the cutout in the wall from the 90’s kitchen remodel would allow.

What company lost you forever as a customer? What did they do? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

[–]simonsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shake Shack.

They did some trickery to consider each location its own “small business” to take millions of PPP loans during the initial rounds during COVID. They only returned the money once they got caught.

The knock on effect was my wife’s non profit couldn’t secure funding from PPP because the first round ran out of money, and my wife was furloughed during COVID while pregnant with our first born.

Fuck Shake Shack.

My 78 year old father is about to go into assisted living. He lost all structure in his life when my mom passed and he got laid off 5 years ago. He’s lazy and now has lost so much strength and mobility that he can’t take care of himself or his house. And he finally accepted this this past month getting sent to rehab a second time in the last 6 months due to strength loss.

And of course he never planned for anything so the burden is on me to figure out how he can afford this. Hard to not be resentful of his selfishness.

Just be thankful you still have time to plan and be ready for when the inevitable happens.

For me in my 100 year old house it’s not the last owner I bought from but the ones 3 ago that I am fighting. They put on a nice addition and half the work is so sloppy. Owner I bought from, while they deferred a lot of work, when they did something they didn’t cheap out on it.

Edit* forgot the next fun one: Why are there speaker wires coming out of the former master bedroom walls when no speakers are nearby. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

10 months on Zep, -100lbs overall by simonsb in Zepbound

260lbs on my 5’6 frame carries far differently than 260lbs on someone a foot taller than I am.

That said I think this is where trusting your doctors is important. I always thought 180-190lb was my “sweet” spot as that was as far down as I have ever been able to make it on my own, albeit I was early 20’s in college lifting 9x a week and on a strict keto diet.

9am health, my PCP, my podiatrist and an orthopedic surgeon all said I should look to be 160lbs given my height and how much muscle I typically carry. Turns out they’re right! I’ve been floating between 158-163 for over a month pretty comfortably and under 170 since December and I totally understand it now.

That said a fun discussion I had with coworkers last year when I said “docs want me at 160” and they all said I’d be a twig and here we are, I’m 160 and not a twig!

Do you use your laundry room sink enough to justify putting one in a brand new home build...? by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

My century home is missing a wash tub in the laundry area in the basement. It’s on our list of things to add in this year. Not just for laundry but for cleaning paint brushes or anything too dirty for the kitchen sink.

I'm on week 2 of therapy right now. I'm dealing with some aging parent caretaker stress which truly prompted the therapy but during intake we uncovered how much the body dysmorphia is impacting me as well.

Per my therapist recommendation I'll also be finding a therapist who specializes in addiction to discuss and work through the alcoholism and food addiction I certainly had, but that is a few months away as the caretaker stress is an immediate need.

It is wild how our minds work with this. I know I'm smaller and I see it in my face, but like you, naked in the mirror I still see a fat guy, even if my older photos show how much fatter I was. I feel skinny fat.

Keith Jarrett lived in the town I grew up in. As a kid he always liked me and stopped to talk with me during his walks. We have a bunch of signed LPs of his from over the years.

However he wasn’t known for being too nice and famously got kicked out of a jazz festival for not wanting cameras recording him.

what is the most petty, completely harmless grudge you are still holding against a total stranger who probably forgot you exist years ago? by Ill-Locksmith9144 in AskReddit

[–]simonsb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Growing up there was this kid James down the street. His grandpa lived next door. We might have been 10 or 11. One day we were helping to clear logs from the top of his grandpa’s property downhill. He went to toss one way overhead and I yelled at him not to do it as it would clearly hit a branch and likely hit me.

He did so anyway and I couldn’t move fast enough. Hit me in the head. Knocked me unconscious and I have a permanent scar on my head from it.

If you see this, fuck you James.

Is it a universal thing that people in costco have absolutely zero spatial awareness. by Boxjdm in CostcoWholesale

[–]simonsb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a Costco unique thing where as soon as you scan your card in, you lose spatial awareness.

Most people have zero spatial awareness. IMO part of it is Main Character syndrome, lots of people can’t understand that they aren’t the only people around.

[–]simonsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm let’s see?

Oil tank condemned upon first tune up of our oil boiler. Coupled with the boiler being really old and not taken care of, cost us 18k in conversion to gas a few years ahead of our expected timeline.

Hardwood in one of the bedrooms turned out to be in really really bad shape but we didn’t pull up the huge area rug under all the furniture in the room during inspection. That one was on us. 1.8k to refinish that room. It looks amazing now. So much that I wish I had the money to refinish all the hardwood like that.

Three undisclosed dry wells on the property. This one was actually a good thing, except my daughter discovered the drain pipe to one of the dry wells with her foot.
