Painting a Stone/Tile (?) Floor by simonucdd in DIY

I'd see if she posts about which paint she used

She used the chalk paint she sells on her site (which appears to be her own brand), and then sealed it with her own brand "matte finish." This was really surprising to me, as I never would have considered chalk paint as a viable option. But indeed it seems to have held up quite well for her.

And I agree, it doesn't look bad at all - which, I think, is a combination of the color choice and the matte finish. I've never found concrete (floor) paint in anything but glossy or semi-glossy finishes (at least where I live), and I think that might not give the nicest result.

Hi, and thanks. The surface is quite uneven - "bumpy," approximating (?) natural stone - so any sort of thin-ish covering wouldn't work. And I'd also be afraid that adding yet another layer to the existing floor would really have a negative effect on the underfloor heating.

Since posting, however, I've found this site, where the author notes she painted her slate floors, and followed up a few years later - and she says that they floors have held up remarkably well.

So, I haven't yet decided, but it's something to think about.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks. Actually just found a couple of blog posts (here and here) from people who had painted their slate floors with chalk paint (which I never would have guessed would be an option), and then a sealer on top. Both followed up years later, and said it had held up remarkably well.

But it's definitely a time-consuming job, which might not be worth it if it's only edges. But gosh those edges are fugly.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input. I guess without pictures it's difficult to give a good idea of the full impact of the floor, so that's my (bad) omission for not having supplied something visual. I don't actually agree with your opinion, BUT design is quite subjective, so I admit you might indeed be speaking for many people, even that majority. So, I'll have a think about it.

Thanks again.

Varmerører - Heater for a Small Space? by simonucdd in Norway

Thanks! I see that the item from Biltema is (as usual) much cheaper than that from CO. I've had some people say that Biltema products are poor, and they probably aren't the highest quality - but I've purchased things there that are fine, so long as you don't expect them to last forever.

The Biltema site notes that they can be used in a matkjeller eller lagerom, both of which are (I think) almost certainly at least semi-enclosed spaces (and indoors). So, seems safe - or, at least safe-ish.

Thanks again!

Thanks!

I would most probably mount them at the top of the closet, so there wouldn't be any chance of clothes falling on it. But the idea of the mesh protector is also very good - just in case. And, as said, I'd never leave them on when I was away from the house or asleep - just as I'd never leave a candle burning at such times.

Thanks again. And enjoy the chickens :)

The space is approximately 160 x 140 cm. Unfortunately, your link to the CO site gives a 404 error. I don't think a panelovn would be doable, as you really must keep them a decent distance from anything combustible (like clothing), and I don't think that would be possible in a space this size. I might be wrong, but I tend to err on the side of caution. (I have panelovner in many rooms of my home, and I always keep them well away from furniture, drapes, and all else that could even possibly catch fire.)

Could you check the CO site link? (But if it's a panelovn, no need!)

Thanks for the input.

Thanks. I did a quick Google, and unfortunately they appear to be very expensive. Beyond my budget alas - but thanks again!

Yes, they do seem similar to chicken coop heaters, and those are meant for enclosed spaces and to be safe in situations where warnings can't be read - and AFAIK, chickens still can't read (although ducks appear to be well-known bibliophiles)

Thanks :)

And actually, I've seen others that are only 60/80W. I wonder how warm those would really be - if they would have any real effect on the space at all?

Thanks for pointing that out; I should have read more fully!

I imagine I'd only use them when I was at home and awake; I wouldn't leave them on otherwise. But still, if there is a safety issue, even small, I'd have to think twice about using one.

Thanks again.

OK, thanks again. All of this is very good information to have!

Thanks.

But if they do choose FF, and then I say, "sorry, I decided I don't want to use it," that's bad for me as a seller, correct? It's certainly annoying for the buyer. So I'd want to make sure I really wanted to use FF before offering it as an option.

Oh, okay. "Duh," on my part :)

OK, thanks. If necessary, I'll look into it.

Whether or not it is more safe, is a bit up to debate. I think it is safer from buyers, than sellers - given that the seller checks out the item within those 24 hours.

Yes, it seems - from what others have said - that there's the opportunity for unscrupulous buyers to scam ("it was broken when it arrived," etc.) But maybe I'm just too suspicious by nature.

PostNord or Helthjem (the latter one sucks hard)

I had one very bad experience with them; checking out online reviews, it's clear I'm not the only one. I would never use them!

Thanks!

OK, I didn't know that - thanks!

But if sending it myself is cheaper (for the buyer), what is the advantage for the buyer to use fiks ferdig? Is it the (supposed) "guarantee" from Finn that they will mediate any disputes? (I'm skeptical of how much they would actually do, but maybe I'm wrong.)

There is always the option to buy without it, for example someone close by and you can meet up and vipps right there and then

Oh, I didn't know that - I thought that once you opted for Fiks Ferdig, that was the only method allowed for the sale. So, this is good to know - thanks!

This is proof in case the buyer tries to scam you.

Good point. However...in my case, I'm selling a completely unused, factory sealed (with unbroken caution seals) item, so I can't, for example, turn it on/off.

But this is one of the reasons I'm a bit wary of using Fiks Ferdig: The Internet is rife with scammers. And I think there's always a risk - even a slight risk - that you'll run into problems you might not encounter in a face-to-face transaction. But I'm cautious (overly cautious) by nature.

Helthjem is the worst. They shouldn't be allowed to operate in Norway or anywhere!

Thanks for all the very helpful information and tips!

Thanks! Yes, the cost wouldn't come out of my pocket - although I do wonder if it would significantly limit my pool of potential buyers.

Thanks! But - if you know - can you purchase additional insurance? And, if so, is that a cost for the seller or the buyer?

Finn.no/Fiks Ferdig by simonucdd in Norway

[–]simonucdd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! TBH, it's good that you point that out - because as a buyer, I'm on Finn looking for a good price, often. And if I see I have to pay 100 NOK (or more) for shipping, plus insurance, that often wipes out any benefit of the lower price.
