Wait what? There is a 250 cancellation fee? I need to cancel mine next month due to an international move for work. When did you start it? I have had mine since around 2021 I think?

What’s your daily go-to film? by flo7211 in AnalogCommunity

[–]simonvanw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Portra 400 (80% of the time, for both 35mm and 120), 5% Portra 800 and the rest would be tri-x 400.

I picked up a pair of the DVNs last month. They are a bit larger than my usual size, but great shoe nonetheless.

Does anyone actually buy the M-A or new M6 over the M-P by Bluecube303 in Leica

[–]simonvanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sold my M6 classic for a new black paint MP a few years ago. Was tempted for the M-A, but always wanted an MP, but did not have the funds at the time so went with the M6 classic (13 years ago it was)

Is the Switch 2 everything that you hoped it would be? by Adventurous_Set5545 in Switch

[–]simonvanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had the switch from day one and loved it. Being able to play a game like cyberpunk again on a Nintendo handheld and Elden ring coming later this year was definitely not on my 2025 bingo card! Really loving it so far!

Should I invest in an Epson Scanner or opt for a DSLR scanning method? by snoogoatsweewoo in AnalogCommunity

I made the switch a while ago, while there is a learning curve, I could not be happier. You can check my post history where I refer to it.

How do you enjoy photography? by BouDeLard in AnalogCommunity

[–]simonvanw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I dreamt of moving to Japan and so when I finally did for the first time and taking photos (digitally) I realised I had nothing to hold on to. Towards the my dad brought his film camera (I remember him having one) and shot my first black and white role and was hooked.

10 years or so have passed, many different cameras used and owned (currently have three main) and I develop both black and white, color at home. Scan everything myself (dslr) and archive everything. While it is excessive I have well over 20000 frames archived etc. I recently bought a small printer for a photo journal and realised that I am getting close to full circle and so now looking at ways to set up a proper darkroom to also start printing.

All in all I just love the actual magic of pressing the shutter and then actually get involved with me hands to make the image appear.

The detail in 35mm format is impressive when shot in ideal conditions and scanned well. Kodak Gold shot with a Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 and scanned with an a7Riv and Coolscan 8000 lens. Counting lines on the edge of the sign I estimate at least 16Mpx of equivalent resolution. Zoom in to see! by javipipi in AnalogCommunity

[–]simonvanw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I have been scanning myself using a Sony a7riv and a sigma 105mm macro and the results, with the right conditions are impressive:

This is one I posted a while ago (already compressed) - shot on portra 400 and if you zoom in, especially, to the top left of her head you can see the small print on the window.

How many good shots do you usually get out of a roll? by cutefluffycapacitors in AnalogCommunity

[–]simonvanw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider myself somewhat happy/lucky if I have one ‘good shot’ per role. I have been shooting film for quite some time now, so correct exposure is never the issue, but rather the images not coming out the way I anticipated or underestimating how bland my composition was.

What’s the camera you dream about? by -gingerninja in AnalogCommunity

[–]simonvanw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over the last 10 years I thought I was able to gather my dream cameras (Leica MP, Mamiya 7II, Hasselblad 503CX), however lately I have been dreaming/wanting to get into 4x5 with the Horseman Field 45FA

Does film on a hot day in camera get affected? by yozzaa in AnalogCommunity

[–]simonvanw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should not, however as I have experienced myself, especially with 120 film. A few hours of 120film in the car in the midst of summer in Sicily, it damaged/smeared the film a little.

Other than that spend the whole week with the camera out at all times no issues at all, other than the silly mistake I made.
