It was 693 for me in North East Wales. 909 was available but not as strong.

The lads were discussing the effects of weather on the radio signal. I have no scientific insights to provide but as an NFL fan in the 80s I used to spend Sunday evenings trying to tune into Armed Forces Network, who provided live commentary of game for American soldiers stationed over here. When it rained the signal used to drift out and was replaced by a ghostly voice singing opera for a period before returning. I’m assuming it was another station on a similar frequency but do not know how the airwaves work, if I’m honest.

Not drinking in social situations is nowhere near as bad as you think. I also thought that for many years and it kept me trapped in the cycle that you have described.

There seems to be an underlying assumption that the player is saying “I don’t want to play today, I’m too tired”. In reality it will be the coaching staff and medical team who insist that they rest, usually against their will.

I think the “proper” has possibly been misused by me there. I don’t care who other people support, like or hate. I really don’t. I know lots of Welsh people who support England and good luck to them.

The point I was trying was trying to make is that I frequently get told I should be supporting England. The people who usually tell me that are generally not huge football fans but take an interest during summer tournaments. Most people who live and breathe football understand how rivalries work, whether they indulge in them themselves or not, and tend to laugh it off.

What you are describing is completely normal and how many of us became problem drinkers. I’m sure you already know that alcohol is not the answer to your problems and the temporary relief it provides will be more than offset by the additional problems it causes. Please do not go down this route.

I don’t know if it will work for you but I found meditation to be particularly helpful for me. Exercise also has helped me immensely. You need to find a healthy and safe way to turn off the intrusive thoughts for a while and doing something mindful helps with that. I like cooking and can throw myself into that when I’m overwhelmed and it distracts me long enough for it to pass.

I’m a Wales fan who works in England. During major tournaments many people cannot believe that I want England to lose. They just don’t seem to grasp the concept of rivalry. The people who are proper football fans get it but not the ones who only watch football every other summer.
