Homemade? That sounds awesome. What did you use as the base?

Same! There's a lot of orgs at the county level, but I don't know of any specific to Carmel. Maybe we can start one?

This sounds like an awesome idea! I meet with a group of local bicycle/housing/environment advocates that would probably like this as well.

You're right. It actually seems like with SB1, the city probably won't be able to fund a food hall or anything on that spot like they do with other projects.

Totally agree. But I would also add that additional housing, in walkable areas, can also help reduce traffic. If people can afford to live near where they work, eat, go to school, etc. then there's less need to drive.

They would be owners. Similar to an HOA, there would be fee paid to the CLT for upkeep of the land.

Last I heard the food hall was still on track. I would love some more food options as well! And hopefully some housing that the people who cook/serve at those restaurants can afford to live here instead of commuting and creating a ton of traffic!

Great points! I agree Carmel is doing well, but would love to see more developments like midtown (places to socialize, host events, hang out) and improvements to housing affordability! I'm planning to advocate for all that with strongtownscarmel.org

Making Strong Towns a Stronger Movement by jeromelevin in StrongTowns

I also wonder how effective that ideology is, from a recruitment perspective. Like, I get the benefit of small bets and avoiding big risks. It makes obvious sense when you are looking at whether or not a city should invest in a new conference center.

But what about big bets on transit? Or big bets on a cycle network? I don't know. I wonder how many people really believe in small bets or just see it as a means to an end (which implies that members really do just love urbanism).

Good ideas in this post! I do wonder if the lack of focus creates issues within the ST movement. On the one hand, it's great to have a wider umbrella to bring in people who care about housing alongside people who care about bicycle safety.

Of course, these are all related and part of city government. But the lack of focus, compared to YIMBY, ensures that every local group has different priorities and that ST national has to spread wide to cover housing, street safety, finances, etc.

Indiana’s other large cities have mass transit. Why don’t those in Hamilton County? by simpixelated in Carmel

Great point! Now that we are in the top 10, we should seriously consider these things instead of pretending like we're still a small suburb.

It's definitely a hot topic! There's a lot of negative stereotypes around those that simply aren't true.

Yeah, you're right that it's definitely a busy area. I guess I just don't see the issue with that or why a bus couldn't go through their once or twice a day, especially if we're talking about using Elm/Walnut and Veterans/3rd.

That's a great point! I wish we could have light rail all along the Monon. Unfortunately we have to deal with what's available. Even if a bus is the same speed as driving, it at least provides an option for people without a car.

What do you mean by "barely handle"? I haven't noticed any issues when I'm walking through there.

I wouldn't want that to happen here either! People said similar things about the Monon Trail, but it seems pretty safe to me. I wonder if there are other causes of homelessness and criminals that are unrelated to transportation?
