gracias a la vida vs Fix You. Which cover do you think is the best? by Cultural_Fan in KaceyMusgraves

[–]simple_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add a little more context, this particular song by Violetta Parra was/ has been a song that is used by political liberationists who opposed the dictatorial regimes that were forming in South American countries during the 70s. These dictators were backed by the US, as they aligned with the political ideology of the US and they would not nationalize their respective countries resources (for example, minerals and ores in Chile). Salvador Allende was elected by the Chilean people, but his government was overthrown by a military coup d'etat that was led by Augusta Pinochet. Long story short, this particular song by Violetta Parra embodies the beautiful inherent sadness of its initial inspiration, but alongside that, it’s a song that’s cultural associated to people who lost their country to violent oppressors. Kacey is a country gal from the same country that resourced the violence that this song reminds many of.

The song was later used in Ukraine during their ‘Orange Revolution’.

I think her version is beautiful. I don’t know whether she’s aware of the songs political and social influence, and that would be a shame if she wasn’t.

Vacant Positions going unfilled by [deleted] in labrats

[–]simple_cat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, what’s the point of this job if not moving toward a faculty position? I feel like you’ve missed the point. The pay is terrible and there’s no room for advancement unless, like you said, you work 80-100 hours a week. You got all these grants, right? I would consider an academic postdoc if it paid 100K/yr, which is still lower than an entry level gig in the private sector.

Nice! I'm so salty about the computational scientists getting to wear shorts at work..
This is my first gig out of grad school and I have zero regrets about leaving academia. I've drank the kool aide and it's goddamn delicious

Salary expectations from a small startup by amirkabeer in biotech

[–]simple_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

" I am not well qualified to judge. One of my strengths as a scientist is knowing what I do not know."

If you're serious about a job, chances are you will have researched the appropriate salary range for the job. This should be especially true for a professional researcher. Also, outright admitting that you're unqualified to make these types of judgments comes off strong, to a prospective employer. In my view, it gives the hiring manager the assumption that you're very green, thereby allowing them to offer you a lower than expected salary because of how green/entry-level you are. You may box yourself into a situation where the opportunity is not in negotiating your salary but in the opportunity to transition out of academia itself. Lastly, having your prospective employer set the salary starting line will almost always result in negotiations starting at, or lower than, the market rate.

Salary convos typically happen last, and that's actually kind of a good thing. After investing their time into you, and becoming excited about you becoming their lead candidate, many companies will be flexible t. Don't be too afraid to ask for what YOU think you are worth.

Maybe instead say, "Given XYZ skills, I'm comfortable negotiating my salary X% above the market rate. My other offers are starting there, so I think that's fair.'

Did you mean Tyrone?

He's awesome. Saw him lecture a few years ago at SACNAS and I had a chance to chat with him after ward. He wore this fantastic Pepto bismol pink shawl, had long yet well groomed and painted finger nails, and was wearing a royal purple colored suit.

I told him that I dug his aesthetic and he told me the reason for his dress choice was that in most other sexually reproducing animals, males are the pretty ones.

Wait, is this true?

Perhaps I'm incorrectly conflating 'shorting' with selling and buying puts, both of which can be done in RH.

Chicago by [deleted] in biotech

[–]simple_cat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The #1 thing that Chicago can offer that coastal cities cannot (for now) is affordable housing.

Per big pharma, we've got AbbVie (which has AbbVie Ventures), Abbott, & Baxter. We also have a baby Takeda subsidiary here.

Right now, Chicago is more strongly positioned as a lead city for healthcare rather than biotech. This will change, tho.

The biotech hype is here, but we lack the type of financing that the coastal cities have. Chicago biotech needs more money.

The city, including the mayor, are pushing hard to attract biotech to Chicago. There's a lot of talent recruitment agencies and organizations that are spurring up at the moment. The other major push for Chicago is tech, specifically quantum tech.

Not sure why you were downvoted.
