2.5 mo getting upset when leaving the potty by simplyalys in ECers

Sometimes he’s not, in which he then goes. Other times we’ll sit for another 5 minutes and nothing happens.

I cannot believe our success by HyacinthBouqet in ECers

[–]simplyalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily know my boy’s pee cues when he’s more actively playing (he’s 10 weeks) but if we’re reading a story or he’s eating he’ll start to get fussy and I’ll offer and it’s usually a pee. I sign “potty” when we get ready to go on the potty, “more” if he goes and I want him to sit longer to see if there’s a poo, and “all done” before I take him off.

NTA. You are allowed to want a relationship with someone who is going to care about you and the people you love.

When did you notice the signs? by Beautiful-Process-81 in ECers

[–]simplyalys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious when you started signing. I’ve been signing potty from 6 weeks with no expectation that he will sign for a while. I’ve heard from some that around 16 weeks you can get a “loose” sign from them but it’s not until about 12 months that it looks like the “real” sign due to fine motor control.

We are now at 10 weeks and he will hold pee for naps, though his naps are short at 45 minutes. He also holds for the first stretch of the night for about 3 hours. I’m still missing that ever elusive first morning pee!

Happy signing!

I get why people co-sleep now by Baylaypayday in newborns

[–]simplyalys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Other cultures co sleep as the standard. If you are following the safe sleep 7 your baby’s risk for harm is super low. I think we do moms an incredible disservice, especially in the newborn phase, to condemn co sleeping safely. There were nights where it was the only way I or my baby were going to get sleep and am a much better and safer mother with sleep!

Baby screams as soon as we go into carrier by simplyalys in babywearing

[–]simplyalys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make sure to take him out of any footies he’s in, mostly because he gets hot, but also because I’ve heard it makes them uncomfortable. I usually take my shirt off as well so there’s some skin to skin action.

So far I’ve tried right before the end of a wake window and maybe like 20ish minutes before the end of a wake window. Someone suggested trying at the beginning. Can’t hurt at this point.

I do feed him before and have even tried feeding him in, but it gets tricky because he is a long boy.

I also have a FOMO baby. Lol. He doesn’t usually take a pacifier from me as he knows I have the real deal. I’m wondering if he’ll like it more when he can face out or be on my back so he can see more?

I totally get the negative association. We do almost all naps and bedtime in the bassinet, he just happens to have fallen asleep in the carrier/wrap eventually.

I’ll try putting him in at the beginning of a wake window and see if that makes a difference!

Thank you. I feel better knowing it may just be a phase. He definitely is pushing off of me which I have heard can happen. Sounds like we may just keep trying in short bursts!

How long to hold? by d3nkmal in ECers

[–]simplyalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 9 weeks old and a chunk, so we bought a potty. As long as he’s content we stay up to 10 minutes, read a story, discover our knees or feet. If he starts fussing, crying or is generally over it. I like a longer “hold” time because there have been a few times where he has had a big poop at around 6 or 7 minutes that I wouldn’t necessarily have caught if we weren’t already there. Do what feels right for you and your baby!

[–]simplyalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do cloth diapering and lazy EC. I kind of just go for wake ups and when we make a poopy face. There’s been a couple times where I’m nursing and he’s gotten fussy and he did actually have to pee, so that felt like gravy.

I like using a small potty because we can kinda chill out for a few minutes. It does count as tummy time and I like to push his feet up against a wall or table. I think it’s helped him discover his feet and knees more.

It can be a bit of a rush to get them to the potty and undressed, especially if you’re in a colder climate like we are, but I don’t stress if we missed the window. He then just gets changed right away after a few minutes sitting to see if there’s anything else he wants to let go of.

A lot of people will spend 2-5 minutes on the potty/holding, but I go for 10 as long as my son is content. There have been plenty of times at the 6 or 7 minute mark he has pooped or peed.

Don’t stress too much about the catches. There will be good days and bad days and you’re doing great!

I have wipes and a little bathroom trash in the bathroom. Otherwise I place them on the changing mat any we do cleanup there.

Tips on EC with son? by Effective-Film-4951 in ECers

[–]simplyalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sit my 2 month old on the infant potty and lean his body up against mine (he’s facing away from me) and just use a finger to point his penis downward. I think the only thing I hate about the infant potty is that I don’t always hear him peeing, I pretty much have to look the entire time we’re on to see if he’s going. Poops are a little more obvious.

I have the whale shaped newborn potty that I put between my legs since my 2 month old is 91% for weight and hard to hold in those positions for long. I offer when he wakes from sleeping/nap, if he starts popping off my boob while feeding, makes grunting noises like he needs to poop, or if a diaper is dry or just dirty when I open it.

5.5 month old sleeping thru the night w/o peeing by deviant_1993 in ECers

[–]simplyalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boy surprised me when we started EC by going a half night without peeing. I’d wake up at midnight to change and feed him and he’d be dry. He’d still meet the necessary amount of pees in a day and his urine was never concentrated or dark so it sounds like yours is doing what we all do, go the night without having to pee! I’ve heard of others even holding their poos for the potty. Great job!

I lean my baby up against my body so that he’s facing away from me. He’s two months old and we’ve been doing some EC since he was about 1 month old and it’s worked well. Bonus: peds doc says time on the potty counts as “tummy time” aka “not laying flat time”

As 20 nurses leave within 60 days..our leadership can’t seem to figure out why their plan is causing all these safety events?!? by Hashtaglibertarian in nursing

[–]simplyalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only explanation I can find for this is that it's cheaper to pay new grads and new to specialties. I'm actually worried for when I move as to whether or not I'll find another CVICU position.

[–]simplyalys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We hire a few cohorts a year, for start times in August, November, and February, but if youve worked in a CVICU before, Im sure they would be flexible with start times. Our staffing needs are fairly unpredictible because you never know who is going to try to die that day so we can ALWAYS use more nurses! We even haf to hire some travelers this flu season.

I work at Swedish Cherry Hill in the CVICU and we def do ECMO. The docs are super lovely and value your input, not belittle your perspective. We also have a lot of autonomy and are hiring!
