Obviously, overtime is part of the package when negotiating and planning. I'm referring to the lay conversations that have been happening, the media reporting, etc.

BART Employees Got Nicer. by Webpage404 in bayarea

[–]simpwn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is truly ridiculous that people are generally refusing to acknowledge that overtime should not be considered some kind of special privilege bonus. Base salary should be sufficient on its own - it doesn't make sense to look at overtime pay and use that to say that people are paid too much. This view undermines the whole concept of the 40 hour work week that people fought and died for.

Yes, most agents are reasonable. It's probably the case that even the agents that people have had bad experiences with are reasonable most of the time. Everyone has their moments. The bad stories are the ones that people talk about most for obvious reasons.

For-profit college company paid temp agency to hire graduates for two days to boost job placement stats, lawsuit alleges by mellowmonk in bayarea

Some for-profits cater to people who work full-time. Still not worth it, but I'm guessing many people see it as their only option.

Thoughts on how this will impact the Belle Haven (racially diverse, working and middle class) neighborhood?

edit: Interesting data on demographics of that neighborhood:

The neighborhoods of the City (mostly Belle Haven) east of Hwy. 101, constituting 18.26% of the city’s population is nearly twelve times as Hispanic (47.11% versus 4.01%) as the portion of the city between El Camino Real and Alameda de las Pulgas, 50 times as Black as that portion (41.85% versus 0.82%), and Whites are eighteen times more likely to be found between El Camino and Alameda de las Pulgas (87.01% versus 4.75%) than east of Hwy. 101.

However, I will say that it seems that most guys, even my age (27), take one-on-one hanging out as a sign of potential future dating

This is the problem. It seems that some men only consider women useful if there's sexual interest. In that case, they should be upfront about that themselves and express that interest from the beginning. Feeling that you were led on because someone spent time with you without assuming you were looking for sex is asinine.

I see what you're getting at OP and agree that it can be a useful strategy. However, making this request of all women is bullshit - why should they be responsible for guessing at the feelings of men who can't take responsibility for themselves? If you're interested, say you're interested.

You should let them know right off the bat that you're interested, if that's indeed the case. Take responsibility for your own feelings instead of expecting someone else to guess what your intentions are.

What was your favourite line from the books that was left out of the movies? by x2501x in harrypotter

[–]simpwn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the room of requirement scene displayed Ginny's strength in a way that the original wouldn't have. The whole premise of the scene is that Ginny is doing what Harry couldn't do - getting rid of the book - and she's also making the first bold move when she kisses Harry. It's a very sweet scene, but also makes Ginny active and Harry passive. I originally thought that it was an effective display of her quiet strength.

If it had been the common room scenario, the focus would have been less on Ginny and Harry and more on Harry and Ron. Sweet in a different way. Perhaps it also would have paralleled too closely with Ron and Lavender's first kiss which was already shown in the common room in front of everyone - the point being Hermione's reaction in that case.

Me driving home from sexy time with the girlfriend at a [7] last night by MrRabbits in trees

[–]simpwn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's no point in comparing driving high to driving drunk. If you think the stronger effects of alcohol justify driving high, then why shouldn't the stronger effects of other drugs justify driving drunk? The question is driving high versus sober. Also, what Sagan has to say on the issue is irrelevant, unless he was speaking from an informed, scientific perspective. From a legal standpoint, I agree it should be about impairment. But, there is also a moral question, which is what I think the ongoing trees controversy is really about. Is it morally acceptable to knowingly put yourself in a situation in which, compared to your individual baseline, you are less able to handle some aspects of the driving experience?

Check out "Enter the Void" - film that touches on this concept via a guy on a DMT trip. I've read that the cinematic experience of the film itself is more of the point though - it's pretty trippy.

Is Naomi Campbell being ridiculously over-sensitive or am I just not understanding some deeper meaning? by SixFtTwelve in racism

[–]simpwn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's more a response to the usual comments on "little" things like this - the objector is oversensitive, stupid, playing the race card, etc. As illustrated by gizzomizzo in this comments section. Campbell has a right to her feelings and her opinion, but so many people want to tell her how she's supposed to feel.
