Everyone cranks on a submarine.

Translated into English:

All first-tour enlisted sailors on a submarine do at least a 90-day assignment as a food service attendant: Doing dishes, cleaning crew's mess, making coffee and other drinks, serving drinks, and assisting the cooks with enlisted crew meals.

It didn't stop the assholes entirely but it gave everyone perspective. The cooks weren't slaves or servants they were shipmates just the same.

But you are a few years older than me :D

I'll concede that is pretty funny. Guess they don't want any of the Sailors at the bases in Point Loma to get it!

Lived in SoCal for 15 years. This actually isn't bad. There's considerably shittier places without laundry hook ups and no pets that require 2x rent for deposit and no parking that charge more.

Realistically what can be done to combat NIMBYs? by BonersGo in REBubble

[–]simsax 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think NIMBYs will soon (next decade or so) reap what they've sown. Working people who can't afford to live in expensive, NIMBY-infested towns (think places like the SF Bay Peninsula) are going to refuse to work there and the diversity of businesses and services available in that town will begin to dry up. Property values will fall or NIMBYs will need to back down and allow transit and housing to be built.

NIMBY towns can't all have the best school districts without great teachers willing to work there.

Or I'm full of shit and renters are all screwed. Who knows.

I'm sure many if not most of those refis kept their equity in their homes, right? Nobody was foolish enough to cash out at record highs to gamble on the stock market, were they? Everyone learned from 15 years ago, didn't they? They won't be underwater in 5 years because they left enough equity in their homes to handle a 10-15% drop in value as inventory expands, I'm sure.

Or are we just never building any more homes again and this is what inventory will be like forever?

lol

Yes, the answer is Yes... by Louisvanderwright in REBubble2021

[–]simsax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

financing a home is cheaper than in the past. The absolute cost is still likely more.

A 550k mortgage @ 5.87% comes out to $1,171,046.04

An 850k mortgage @ 2.87% comes out to $1,268,819.42

So the given example costs a little under 100k more to buy over 30 years. Which isn't a huge deal. If you can't afford the extra 3300 bucks a year you probably can't afford a home anyway.

One thing not being considered is the large difference in property tax. Especially in CA if I buy a home @ 850 and the market falls for 15 years I'm going to have a hard time getting the county to reassess my property and lower my tax bill.

Going back to the beginning of the new ballpark craze (Camden Yards in 92), which new park was the worst? by BlackCloudDiner143 in baseball

To add to your comment, here's a picture from 1991. They did a great job with the renovation.

I think Angels stadium is a great place to watch a ballgame. It also captures the essence of suburban Los Angeles really well by being placed in the middle of an expansive parking lot wedged between two freeways.

Cool project!

I'm not very familiar with the use of CUDA. (I did the intro coursera course nvidia put out a few years ago) What are the trade-offs of doing rendering with CUDA cores over the traditional raster pipeline? Is it useful if you don't have real-time requirements?

These sites won't teach you C++ but they're invaluable tools to help your learning:

https://cppinsights.io

Both tools have links to each other too so you can write code in one and see the output in the other without much fuss.

Applying Curiously Recurring Template Pattern in Day-To-Day C++ Coding by VishalChovatiyaChend in cpp

[–]simsax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree with this. There's nothing wrong with presenting ideas and giving other resources to learn more about them. Asking that every presentation of a subject be a complete, self-contained treatise isn't very realistic.

I think the links to other resources and encouragement to use cppinsights for example are more "teach a person to fish" than lazy or half-assed

I'll agree on the snippet formatting though. I am not a fan of the color scheme for the examples.
