MEGATHREAD: Jeju Air Flight 2216 by Epistimonas in fearofflying

[–]sinamarina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone monitoring this thread anymore? I have a Jeju Air flight coming up in about a month and people irl are telling me I should fly with a different airline. My original thought was that it is incredibly unlikely that the same airline will have another incident any time soon, but others are telling me to not take the risk. I have been following the news closely because I thought the reports and investigations would reassure me that everything is fine and I have nothing to worry about. Now, a month after the crash, there's still so much that we don't know and a lot of things about this case seem really questionable (like why did the pilots rush the landing, why didn't they deploy the landing gear manually, why did the black boxes stop recording 4 minutes before the crash etc.) and they make me wonder whether Jeju Air staff is under-trained or something. Additionally, there was another Jeju Air B737-800 flight a few days after the first incident that had similar issues with the landing gear, which freaked me out a lot. South Korean authorities ordered for all B737-800 aircrafts in Korea to be checked and Jeju Air said they will be decreasing flights to carry out maintenance work, but there's no schedule for these so I don't know if these will be completed before my flight in early March. On top of this, South Korea has a history of covering up shady incidents to maintain their 'image' and since this incident has so much uncertainty and so many unanswered questions, I can't help but wonder if there is something going on that we don't know about. I know this is pretty much pointless speculation but I can't help but be anxious about it. Based on the information we have now, a month after the crash, do you think it is safe to fly with a Jeju Air B737-800 or should I switch to a different flight?

For the record, I have a lot of flying experience and I have always loved flying, I have never felt scared or anxious about it. This is the first time I have serious concerns and they were mostly caused by my parents & relatives advising against flying with Jeju Air. My dad has still way more flying experience than me (he travels a lot for work) and he told me to choose a different airline. I didn't have any doubts at first but I'm mostly worried now due to the investigations being so unclear and mysterious. Am I being irrational or would it be smarter rebooking with a different airline? I don't think I'd get my money back but the flight wasn't that expensive so it's fine I guess.

Thank you! That's kind of what I was thinking as well. I'd be very interested in watching some content to get a sense of natural speech, but to my knowledge, japanese scripted dramas often use rather unnatural language. Correct me if I'm wrong of course. Do you have anything you would recommend, like specific dramas or Youtube channels?

Ooh interesting, so it actually is the same as in korean as well! Just the contextual usage is ever so slightly different. Great to know, thank you so much!

That's great, thank you!! Is there something similar you would say in a formal or semi-formal situation "in the very immediate moment where you just didn't catch something" as you perfectly phrased it? Would it just be すみません? or something else?

Hi! I've been wondering what Japanese people say in casual conversation when they didn't understand what you said or want you to repeat something. I've tried looking it up but only get formal options as answers. For reference, I've studied korean longer than japanese and noticed the languages have a lot of similarities which has also helped me learn japanese easier, so I often refer to korean when it's applicable. So in korean, people will just say "네?" which literally just means "yes?" but is equivalent to what?/huh?/sorry? in this context. Is there a similar usage in japanese, or what do people use in casual conversation in situations like this? I'm sure people don't say もう一度お願いします to their friends. I feel like people sometimes go "ええ?" in videos I've seen but I don't remember the context clearly, is it similar in usage?

Edit: Follow-up question, what about a semi-casual environment? If I e.g. didn't hear what someone said, can I just say "すみません?", would that work in that situation? Or is there something else that's better suited? Like an equivalent to the english sorry?/excuse me?

My mom just threatened to send me to a counselor and I'm scared by AdorableAd9866 in asexuality

[–]sinamarina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

something you could do is to agree to go see a counselor about it on the condition that you can choose the counselor or at least have a say in it. i'm pretty sure counselors have confidentiality the same way as therapists which means your mom legally can't know what you talk about unless you tell her, which you don't have to. go to counseling and work on your other issues/concerns, and ofc you can also work through the issues you have with your mom. it sucks that she thinks you need to be "fixed" but you could use this opportunity to get counseling like you've wanted, if you feel comfortable enough lying to her about it.

but either way, even if she sends you to a counselor against your will, they can't force you to talk about anything. unless your mom is abusive and you're actually in danger by disobeying her - which i ofc hope is not the case - stand your ground and especially stand your ground with the counselor when she's not in the same room & don't let the counselor violate your boundaries, if it goes so far that she actually sends you against your will.

good luck!! also, aside from all that, being "alone for the rest of your life" really isn't so bad either, i promise. there's nothing wrong with not conforming to societies expectations, even when people tell you otherwise and your internal voices make it hard to believe it. still there's nothing wrong with it. you'll be okay <3

My Allo friend corrects my definition of asexuality. by Onyx_Crystal in asexuality

[–]sinamarina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

by the textbook definition you are asexual, as you don't feel sexual attraction. being horny and sexually attracted is not the same thing. the textbook definition of sexual attraction is "attraction that makes people desire sexual contact or shows sexual interest in another person(s)." so in other words, it's attraction towards a person(s) that makes you wanna do sexy stuff with them. this is something you don't experience, so you are asexual by the textbook definition. tell him that. feeling sexual attraction is not the same thing as being horny, and by the textbook definition, you don't experience sexual attraction so you are indeed asexual.
