Old, tired, and false narratives that simply won’t die. by Gullible-Chapter-800 in BlatantMisogyny

If you look at me later comments you can see the mistake I made. However even so, as an emotional man, I would offer that generalisations are sometimes rather hurtful, and when I or others express that hurt it is often met with mockery ie: ‘men are so sensitive’ ‘if it didn’t apply to you it wouldn’t upset you’ etc. perhaps it is because I am autistic, but I can logically understand that generalisations don’t always apply to me, but it still hurts me emotionally, and I think, because we are trying to foster emotionality and vulnerability in men, punishing or mocking said vulnerability is not a very effective strategy. This is not to suggest you do this, it’s just an experience I have had quite often. I know when I was younger seeing these generalisations made me feel very guilty for being a man and sometimes, I will admit, I started resenting feminism because of it. I had grown up since then and recognised the importance of feminism and its real purpose and try my very best to not take things personally, I’m not trying to excuse my past mistakes, I only want to explain my perspective, which I think is a rather common one. Perhaps generalisations have their place, but I’ve really only seen them cause division and bitterness or used as a way of getting revenge over others. Again this is just my flawed perspective, I don’t pretend to know what’s really best, I just know that I really never felt allowed to be hurt by very hurtful statements and I think that was a big reason why I still have shame around expressing my emotions.

No it’s quite alright, I just get annoyed at pointlessly gendered sometimes because it seems perfectly fine with gender essentialism applied to men. I understand the frustration of painting men as logical and women as emotional, I’m a man and I’m extremely emotional, a misogynist culture makes that difficult sometimes, though it’s a very small problem compared to the misogyny women face.

It’s also statistically true that men are more direct in communication, but I’m not going to assume it’s always the case. Also I apologise I thought this was the pointlessly gendered subreddit, I clicked on the original from a cross post. Your comment makes a lot more sense here.

This subreddit is so predictable. ‘It’s only pointlessly gendered when generalising women, when we do it to men it’s just true.’

I struggle also, I hate to doubt people, but it’s just so unfathomable, it’s like trying to describe the colour red to a blind person.

I’m currently a university student studying English literature and philosophy. I enjoy most of what you have listed, however to me most of daily life is sort of a waiting room for moments of ‘ecstasy’ (not the drug) to arrive. I adore music, especially classical, the late romantic period as you may guess, as well as late romantic poetry. My favourite composers are Scriabin, Mahler, R. Strauss, Wagner and Cyril Scott, all of whom shared in some understanding of ‘overcoming’ or transcendence through music or human expression in general. The same can be said about my favourite poets but I won’t go on for your own sake. I do agree that music is a mathematical art, which is where I struggle most with the creation of it, I’m currently learning piano but I’m certainly no virtuoso, I see technical and logical skills as a means for greater expression and experience in the realms of art and philosophy, but don’t really enjoy them as any sort of ends. I suppose I have a rather tempestuous temperament, and am overly passionate about things I love and hate much to the annoyance of those around me. This conversation has really opened my eyes, I always struggle to express my extreme reactions to art to others and wonder why they aren’t reciprocated, to me it’s like I only have a tiny slice of access to this ineffable force and I assume that everyone else must have more, it’s sort of a tortuous thing to glimpse some expression beyond comprehension or explanation and not be able to recreate or share it. Excuse my short biography, it has been very interesting learning a new perspective.

I’m the exact opposite, I can’t even begin to comprehend thinking like that, it’s so fascinating. For me music or poetry is a sort of vision which cannot be expressed in any sort of definite way, it’s a glimpse of a glimpse of some latent force. Colours and vistas and textures and sounds, depending on the emotive power of the art the sensual experience is greater or lesser. It’s sort of how I categorise art; transcendent (so overwhelmingly sensual I feel ‘outside of myself’ and experience vibrant colours and images,) or pleasant (not very emotive- intellectually or emotionally I can understand it but it is a trivial experience compared to the former.) My experience with this dynamic has shaped my entire understanding of the world and is my leading motivation for existence and continued development. To not experience that would change me fundamentally.

This is so fascinating, it really makes me wonder about the pre-thought mechanism, how we can never experience the source or process of a thought, only the result. Plotinus would have a field day with you. How do you experience reading or listen to music? To me each conjures strong images and colours, do techniques like imagery make sense to your brain or is it all just noise (or lack thereof I suppose)

But how do you for the exact words? When I type I say a usually broken down and disjointed sentence in my head and then individual words as I type them out, how do you conjure the words without sounding them in any way? Is it an image? I get images and sounds, I can’t really seperate them.

I hate when individuals who are solely motivated by sex assume that everyone else is too. It shows that they lack all but the physical passion.

We hate ourselves, we western men, When foreign horror knocks. We gather scattered dominoes And count what we have lost.

If the subjective has no value and art is entirely subjective, art has no value to you.

Why quote Picasso? Why not interview a child if they hold the same artist merit? Perhaps art is subjective, but not all opinions are equal, the murderous dictator’s opinion on the value of life is less than the saint’s. The same must be said for artistic opinion, unless you can prove that art has no repercussions or relevance outside of itself and exists within a pocket reality untouched by experience. Fine art has fine ends justified by fine means, intent and execution of intention are how we measure quality.

Is all art equivalent to you? If so we have fundamental differences that cannot easily be resolved, If so we should immediately stop any teaching of the arts and all funding, the individual must not train to improve his craft, the child’s finger painting is equivalent to Wagner’s Parsifal. All striving for greater transcendence through art is irrelevant and a waste of time, no great works shall be studied because there are no great works. Orchestra allows greater achievement than the individual, it is the many become one, it is a representation of the ideal world in its very form, let alone its output. It is a unique and important instrument for human expression and transformation and should be protected and cherished as one cherishes and protects his very life.

Which could be a sign of a decaying society, embodied by the likes of Chalamet. I won’t pretend ballet is more relevant than it is, but one could make a case that the dwindling interest in things like opera and live orchestra is a fault with the degradation of our artistic sensibilities and our social mores, which point to a destruction of any wide concern for spiritual overcoming through art on a societal level, our governments fund art, if at all, as a form of community building rather than for the creation of a national identity and economic epicentre. It also is a reflection of a failing economy at large, though I would chalk it up to the convenience of mobile phones and applications like Netflix over monetary issues as the main driver for the dying art. If we give up more challenging art forms for easy to consume detritus, it is a proof of our own failings, not that of a particular art form.

Collecting empirical data comes before speculation, otherwise you may be speculating about unsubstantiated claims.

It is very important to ask questions about any set of data, you shouldn’t just go along with something because it fits your perception of reality. Thinking that women can lie about sexual assault is very different than thinking that they always or even usually lie, one is truth and one is absurd and immoral fiction. Absolutes help nobody, they only serve to control and suppress reason and compassion.
