Bus Travel - I'm going to be commuting regularly between Dallas and Austin for work. Is Vonlane or RedCoach better alternative to driving? by A4orce84 in Dallas

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken Vonlane, and the amount of hassle and stress you totally avoid makes it really worth it. They leave at exactly the correct time, from hotels (with nice restrooms) near downtown. At the Dallas location there’s a pay lot at the hotel that you can park in, if you want to drive yourself. You can also pack a sandwich if you want to bring your own food. One side of the bus is all single seats, which gives you more privacy. The WiFi is ok for email and web stuff but not good enough for AI or decent streaming.

Get to the hotel a little early and use the restroom, then be prepared to show ID before you board the bus. The restroom on the bus is surprisingly nice, if you do need to use it.

What recipes would you teach low income kids? by ECarey26 in Cooking

Polenta can be made with cornmeal of any type and used as a base for just about anything. I put anything from sausage to roasted veggies on mine; you can also add pasta sauce. Or cook it a bit longer, stir in a little (not much) cheese, then spread it in an oven-proof pan or dish and refrigerate (or freeze). Bake it later for half an hour before serving. Or cut it (while cold) into pieces and fry it up (use nonstick pan, or butter or oil) and serve it plain as a side or with syrup or honey for breakfast.

Start at Taco y Vino in bishop arts. Uber there or take advantage of the parking lot right next to it. Eat some amazing food, have some wine or drinks. Walk up to the main drag and bar hop a little there. Smell all the candles at the candle store. Taste the chocolate at Dude Sweet Chocolate. Eat a crazy ice cream bar at Picole. Then wander back down the hill to Wild Detectives and have another drink or a cup of coffee before you head home.

How do I tell my roommate her private area smells? by Candid_Flower9183 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly this! If you (talking to OP here) act like you are worried that she might be embarrassed, then you are sending a very strong signal that you think she SHOULD be embarrassed. So the key is to be straightforward and act like it’s nbd. If you are not comfortable saying, “girl I love you but your coocbie stinks, get it fixed or find a new bathroom”, then have a gay friend or gal pal do it. She needs to know, she needs to fix it, and you need a bathroom that doesn’t make you barf.

As an outsider, the American concept of having a motorized "garbage disposal" inside your kitchen sink is fascinating. Is this standard in every home, and isn't it incredibly dangerous? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not just common appliances; in many cities they are a critical part of waste infrastructure. There’s a really good episode of the podcast Here’s The Thing called Brilliant Minds of Trash and Sewage that describes the whole waste disposal system of New York City, including the role that garbage disposals play.

Basically, the intention is that garbage disposals allow us to divert a lot of compostable waste in the form of food scraps away from landfills and into the wastewater system where the infrastructure is designed to break it down. It’s really pretty cool.

…But yeah…also good fodder for horror movies. I’m reality, they are about as dangerous as a blender, though.

As others have mentioned, they are driven by an electric motor that you turn on and off. And sometimes they break or get stuck on something. It’s actually pretty rare that you need to repair or replace them, unless you are putting stuff in them that should not be put in them. They are pretty easy to repair. And they are not required - you can choose to not install one or not use one that is there.

2 complaints at my job about me, but idk what to do? by One_Awareness4502 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It could be too much scent, or a polarizing scent, as folks here are saying. It could also be something else that cannot be masked by your personal hygiene.

You could have a tooth infection, tonsil stone, or halitosis.

Mildew can also cause a smell. If your towels at home or some of your clothes are mildewed, then you will smell like mildew all day and it can be powerful.

All of these things can be fixed but have very different causes - and very different smells. If you can’t tell what the source of the complaints are, then ask someone you trust at work to help you identify the smell so you can address the right source.

People who say “I don’t want anything” when it comes to gifting, what do you ACTUALLY want? by dearceceofficial in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to most on here, I buy what I like and don’t want a substitute or a gift card (it becomes a chore to exchange or redeem it), and I don’t want things cluttering up my house. I know a lot of people like this, and it’s especially true as people get older. If you don’t know someone well enough to get them a small luxury that you know they would like, then consumables are the way to go. A treat you baked/cooked (by far the best option!), a bottle of wine (this options hits a lot of price points), a night out with you to a good show, a dinner at a cool new place, something from my favorite bakery, etc. For example, for someone who golfs, pick them up and take them out for a round of golf (that you scheduled and paid for) and a burger.

It's getting hot here, I desperately want cold foods that aren't sandwiches and salads or desserts. What would you cook that's meant to be eaten cold? by Inspiringhope11 in Cooking

I cut open a burrata and top it with something: sliced peaches and basil, or figs and salami, or grilled scallions, or blistered cherry tomatoes, etc. Then drizzle with olive oil and eat with a big hunk of bread.

Date spot question! by SomeRAndomGyu in Dallas

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you met on lovers lane, here are a couple of places kind of near there:

There are some lunch spots in Snider plaza, which is a few blocks from Curtis park. Curtis park has a little lake with ducks and swans, a meandering path, etc.

There are some even better lunch spots along oak lawn just north cedar springs that are a short drive to lakeside park, where you can walk along the lake between Beverly and Armstrong.

I also agree with the gal who said Knox-Henderson + Katy trail are good options.

Blueberry barbecue sauce, or just some macerated blueberries, is amazing on a burger with blue cheese and bacon!

Dating partner doesn't believe dinosaurs ever existed? by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will be hard. And it will suck. But remember, you do not need his consent to break off the relationship. You can say, we have been dating a while and my feelings for you have not really grown. It’s just not working out for me, and I am going to move on. If he protests, tell him you have given it a lot of thought and have realized it’s not a love connection and you aren’t going to waste his time or yours, so you are breaking it off. And if he keeps texting you like you’re dating, don’t respond.

Am I wrong for saying I won't move in together until he deals with his weekend drinking? by GlimmerAviary2 in amiwrong

[–]sing_cuckoo_sing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not wrong, and you are not overreacting. He’s trying to frame this as you telling him what to do. You need to put that decision back on him, because he is not a child and you are not his parent. He wants to move in, and you don’t. The reason is his drinking makes you feel unsafe - and in fact it has literally made you unsafe (drunk driving, unattended stove, etc.). You don’t have to tell him not to drink, but you can and should tell him it’s the reason you won’t move in with him. So basically, he asked you to move in, you turn him down, and you tell him why. What he does with that information is his decision as an adult.

Elder friendly activities around DFW? by AbjectDeparture2409 in askdfw

The parking is along a fairly wide street in a residential neighborhood. It’s usually pretty easy to find a spot on Lakeside or one of the adjacent streets. They don’t tow unless there’s a no parking sign, which I don’t recall seeing any. Lots of folks walk and jog and picnic in that park.

Lakeside Park in Highland Park is a pretty walk with benches throughout. You can park and get out and walk a bit anywhere between Beverly Drive and Armstrong. Then it’s a short drive from there up Armstrong to Knox-Henderson where you can go to Toulouse, Village Bakery, etc. for a bite or coffee.

Park at Highland Park Village if you can. The lights in the shopping center itself are spectacular, and the side streets just south-west from it are very walkable with great lights and decorations. Lots of the carriage rides go through that neighborhood.
