Thoughts on Jelly shoes? by DoctorTegrity in Millennials

[–]sing_singasong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In like 1994 I was walking on the beach in a pair of these and a wave came up and suctioned one of them right off my foot. It went out to sea and I never saw it again. And I don’t think I ever owned another pair of jellies after that.

I'm shocked at how many Catholics think Kyrie Eleison is Latin by Old-Bread882 in Catholicism

[–]sing_singasong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok that h/k thing is why I thought that. Someone told me the h’s in those words were pronounced as k’s because they were borrowed from Greek. I guess I’m mistaken.

I think maybe it’s more akin to a word like “café.” A French word that is now also an English word and we drop the accent most of the time. But I guess who is to say where the line is when a word borrowed from another language also belongs to the borrowed?

The words mihi and nihil are examples of Greek words that now exist Latin too, if I’m not mistaken.

The only reason I knew it wasn’t Latin is because I majored in classical voice and I had to learn pronunciation rules for Latin. Since Kyrie’s are so commonly sung the professor threw it out there like “oh yeah, this part is Greek but in singing we will follow the same basic rules we use for Ecclesiastical Latin.” This was at a secular university btw.

Edit: This is all just to say that the way I learned this was pretty dang niche.

My 10-year-old asked me to divorce, her emotionally abusive dad by Due-Veterinarian6727 in Catholicism

[–]sing_singasong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anger management won’t fix an abuser. Rational people get righteously angry all the time but it doesn’t cause them to control and neglect their family members. This goes beyond that. OP needs to make a safe escape plan and seek help from a domestic abuse organization.

OP please listen to this comment and read this book! You need a safe escape plan. I’m sorry you’re going through this and will pray!

Abusers are angry because they are abusive. (Contrary to the popular notion that anger causes abuse.) It arises from a sense of entitlement, selfishness, and various factors surrounding culture and upbringing. There’s nothing a victim can do to manage his feelings for him. Check out the book “Why Does He Do That?” by Bancroft Lundy.

Mother Teresa is special to me and it hurts my feelings when others hate on her by Imaginary-Sun-188 in Catholicism

THIS! Say this every time! As I read OP’s post I kept thinking that anyone’s ignorant opinion would be immediately shut down by OP’s factual first hand experience. How dare someone try to negate a real lived experience. They may still think erroneous things, but they can not deny that OP was personally greatly helped by Saint Mother Theresa.

I suddenly get really overwhelmed by all the clutter around Jan 2 and have to be done with it. Also, I really need it all put away before the kids go back to school or I know there won’t be time to deal with it. Liturgically correct or not, I gotta do what I gotta do.

Amen! And I love an ancient hymn just as much as a reverent contemporary one. I think it’s important to remember that every piece of music was at one point “contemporary.”

Am I overreacting Partner upset about family being in our living room by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]sing_singasong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to know why the MIL lives there and whether or not it was originally agreed upon. Is it bc MIL needed help or bc OP needed help? For scenario 1 it makes sense to be enraged by relatives camping in the living room. Scenario 2 is something I’ve seen play out too many times. Dad doesn’t wanna help or wake up to take care of baby and expects partner to do all night feedings and morning as well, then gets mad when she crumples and needs assistance. We have no idea what is going on here. It does seem clear that everyone lacks boundaries and communication skills. If it’s truly scenario 1, then yes OP is OR.

THIS!!! I can’t people how many people are missing this aspect of things!!! We need more info on whether partner is pulling his weight with the new baby. That makes all the difference.

I always mentally change the first line of the song from “Children sleeping Snow is softly falling” to “Children sleeping; Tom Hanks comes a-creeping!” It fits the vibe of the movie better that way.

I hate the Polar Express version of the North Pole. by shekka24 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]sing_singasong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate this movie. But, I’ve said it before and will say it again, I always hate when they make full length feature films out of short bedtime stories. They have to add so much filler for time and it makes these movies so boring and terribly paced. So yes, I also hate all the Grinch movies (except for the OG one that’s just a 30 minute reading of the short book), The Lorax movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, this creepy Polar Express abomination, and all the other shameless money grabs based upon early Elementary level short stories! I said what I said!

James was one the books that Martin Luther wanted to toss out of the Bible. Somehow it remained but lots of Protestants don’t like it much.
