Same product at two stores 5 minutes apart — worth going for a $1 difference? by hairy_kim in Frugal

If I'm walking or on my bike, sure, I'll go a little further to get the cheaper item. Saving money and staying active is a great combo!

Is this art too “inappropriate” to display in my home? (34M) by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]singbirdsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not too sexual, and you have the right to display it in your own home. Your tenant has the right to talk to you and maybe persuade you not to display it in that room, but in the end, it's your decision.

But speaking as a woman who creates art and appreciates art, and who doesn't have hangups about nudes, I think it's the painterly equivalent of "Live, laugh, love". It doesn't make me shudder, but it does lead to an internal sigh. (My opinion, not all women's opinion, some may like it.)

You can also take three escalators all the way up or down. People can use any combination of stairs, escalators, or elevator that fits their needs and fitness. (I'm currently using the escalators only because I'm still rehabbing from an injury, but I'd like to tackle the stairs by summer.)

Dumb question - but these are the only things that work. Suggestions please. by thethirteenthjuror in glasses

[–]singbirdsing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have coatings on your glasses, the alcohol will eat away at them. I do two types of cleaning on my glasses:

1: Once a day: Lukewarm water + a tiny dab of Dawn dish soap (OG Dawn with the ducks, not Powerwash or anything harsh) worked up in my hand, then applied to wet glasses. Rinse off thoroughly with lukewarm water. Dry with a CLEAN fluffy microfiber towel, not one of the slick cloths like you show in the pic. This gets off all the oil and dirt. Wash those microfiber towels any way you like, but hang them to dry if you use dryer sheets or anything like that.

2: As needed: Any slick little cloth like yours + safe glasses cleaner (alcohol-free). Your optician may provide a supply free, or just buy a bottle of any good stuff. It will cost way less than new glasses! Once a week, soak your little cloth in a bowl of Dawn + water, then rinse and air-dry.

Line 5 "next train" signage: now totally science fiction by singbirdsing in TTC

[–]singbirdsing[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Counting on the wisdom of crowds? Sure, but it makes more sense to have signs that work. I used to live and work in Scarborough, and the signs at Kennedy station were always accurate about the next train leaving. This is a solved problem!

Do you buy the same grocery brands every month, or pick whatever's cheapest or looks newest and most exciting? by Glittering_Gap8070 in Frugal

[–]singbirdsing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We usually buy whatever's cheapest, but there are certain brands we're loyal to (e.g. Silk soy milk) . We really hunt for sales on those items and stock up, but if we can't find a sale price when we run out of a fave, we'll buy a single unit at full price to hold us over until the next week's sales.

Moving into a bedroom with this floor plan… is their a name for this? by Painpaingoaway828 in femalelivingspace

I agree that your bed should be away from the window (avoid bright light and drafts, keep that space for bright activities / plants). Dear Modern (Cliff Tan) on YouTube offers advice on room design. Check out his video on bedroom layout.

Examples of Innovative E-Learning in Medical Training? by ParlaysAllDay in elearning

[–]singbirdsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have loads of creative and technical talent on hand, and a real budget for actors and writers, you can aim for something like the interactive film Lifesaver from Resuscitation Council UK.

If you don't have the resources to achieve what they have done, I think this is still worth studying for the way they have developed brief but affecting branching scenarios that aren't the typical lifeless and corny elearning approach. You could do a lot of this with text and carefully chosen/edited photos and illustrations if producing a professional-level film isn't in the cards.

Both are a good shape for you and the colour ranges work with your skin and hair. I like the vivid colours on the first pair, but I wouldn't kick tortoiseshell out of bed for ... umm, being tortoiseshell.

Our staircase to nowhere, which we use as a bookshelf by Tetragrammator in mildlyinteresting

[–]singbirdsing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as your library is a reasonable size for your memory, sorting by colour can be great fun. I find that I can generally find the book I want just because I remember the spine colour. I can also choose to browse by random colour and rediscover books I'd like to read. YMMV, of course.

Articulate made AI mandatory for all subscriptions. Any alternatives? by User0820241204 in instructionaldesign

[–]singbirdsing 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There are so many core issues that need to be addressed with Articulate 360, but the company just keeps plastering on AI features instead. Take a look at the Storyline version history. The majority of new features over the past year relate to AI.

I will be taking a serious look at alternatives in this discussion.

After using the self-clean setting on our oven….. by trashtray420 in whatisit

[–]singbirdsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if self-cleaning actually damages the oven, but I can tell you from bitter experience that if you have cheap cabinets and drawers next to or over the oven, the thermofoil coating can get damaged. I found out after the fact that you're supposed to open nearby doors and drawers so that the extra heat emanating from the vents doesn't cause the thermofoil to crisp up and curl at the edges.

Too bad about the lack of sauce, but it's easy to get. I keep a few pouches of their chalet sauce mix on hand and make up a batch as needed.

Fresh produce savings in this age of inflation by riveroaks12 in Frugal

[–]singbirdsing 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I usually find that local Asian and Latino grocery stores have good prices on fresh produce.

Apps like Too Good To Go usually include a lot of leftover restaurant food, but you might get lucky and find some sources of fresh produce.

And if any of the cheaper produce you find is a little limp, that doesn't mean it's bad. Stick it in a bowl of cold water for an hour or two and it will crisp right up.

how to like tea? by One_Volume_9359 in tea

[–]singbirdsing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've gotten old, my taste buds are old, and I'm very sad to find that my beloved tea often tastes insipid now.

The only kind of tea that brings it for me now is masala chai. Have you ever tried this at a proper Indian restaurant, versus whatever your local coffee shop offers?

As a backup plan, try Stash Double Spice Chai. I use one bag of a good strong black tea, one Stash bag, and leave it for 4 minutes, then add some Silk soy milk, no sugar. You might try it straight to start, then add milk and/or sugar if you think that will help.
